I was in the crowd that night, and after shouting myself hoarse at the velodrome in previous days, I vowed to kept it down here, only to lose my voice cheering on Andrew Lloyd, by the way I'm a proud Aussie.

In Seoul, Ngugi separated himself from the field with one decisive surge after 1000 meters. Here, he needed to make three: once to catch up to the pack after falling, again after Ondieki fell, and once more to shake off the Canadian and English runners. No wonder he had nothing left to respond on the last straight, but it required amazing strength just to be in that position.

Not often you see such drama in a 5K. That was fun to watch.

Ngugi ran a 59 second lap straight after the fall. From the javelin run-up for one circuit.

I followed this race live while I was in the UK doing my MSc. I think Ngugi over reacted to the fall. Even if there was malice in tripping him he should have stayed calm and recover without over asserting himself the way he did. The near 60 min a lap surges took the toll on him. The last laps he was running with tired legs and could not accelerate on the final lap
