800m Final 1987 World Championships,Rome(Konchellah/Elliott/Barbosa)

Billy Konchellah at his best was was ,quite simply,awesome.In a great final he makes a 1.43.06 look remarkably easy, leaving Elliott(1.43.41) and Barbosa(1.43.76)to collect the lesser medals.Tom McKean,one of the pre race favourites,took a knock in the back straight and went backwards,leaving him with one to forget.

I've just listened back to this commentary, and it isn't fair on Peter Elliot and his magnificent Silver Medal achievement here that David Coleman and Seb Coe focussed initially on Tom McKean's failure. I am pleased that McKean eventually won European 800 metres Gold, but this Silver Medal for Elliot was outstanding, followed by Olympic 1500 metres Silver 12 months later in Seoul.

McKean went into this joint fav with Konchellah; it was the first time he'd had the weight of expectation placed on his shoulders, having previously been considered the young pretender to Coe & Cram, and he crumbled under the pressure.

I agree but it wasn't just down to pressure though - he simply didn't have the ability to run an 800m at that pace, he looked as if he was struggling to keep up even before he stumbled. He was great at out-kicking inferior runners in slow races but was always found wanting at World/Olympic level.

Tom Mckean had no one to blame but himself here he let himself get boxed in and than wasted all his energy fighting the bigger man..when he lost tge tussle he just finished last...there was always something at the top level....mcKean shoupdve won this race and 1991 but something always happened. I dont agree he was just a front runner. .i think he had it in him to win a big one in 1:43
