Atla Palani, Nest Tender | Eldrazi Omelettes - The Brewery [S01E08]

Greetings, everyone! Welcome to The Commander Tavern! I am Demented Kirby and this is the 8th episode of one of the series on this channel, The Brewery. This series is all about brewing and deck techs - hopefully showcasing the spiciest of brews!
In this episode of The Brewery I present my take on Atla Palani, Nest Tender. This video explains how to I plan to build the deck and why I chose the cards I did. The main strategy is to create as many egg tokens as possible in order to sacrifice them for value as well as using them to cheat fatties into play as early as possible.

It's important to note when playing this deck that if you get an early start, thus getting a huge creature like a turn 4 or 5 Blightsteel Colossus or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Gyre, you might become the archenemy for the rest of the game. So you might want to take that into consideration when piloting a similar deck to mine.

I really want to see your take on Greven, Predator Captain. He seems like a really underrated commander, yet so strong!

Greven, Predator Captain has a ton of potential. For one thing, "life-loss matters" is definitely a great direction to take it in. Hatred is the best card for Greven because if he's unblocked, you can pay only 8 life for it, giving Greven +8/+0 because of his own ability and then +8/+0 due to Hatred itself, making him 21/5 for that insta-kill. Other obvious cards that come to mind is Wall of Blood and Necropotence. With these cards you can pay life for free in response to Greven dealing combat damage in order to easily take out a player. As far as his second ability, I see it more situational than anything. That being said, you can include creatures with leaves-the-battlefield and/or death triggers in order to make the most of it. That way you can maximize the synergy of his triggers; either way you'd be drawing cards and losing life which in turn pumps Greven, but why not make the most of it? The shell upon which you can elaborate around this doesn't necessarily have to be so large. You can do it with maybe a suite of a couple of cards. And the rest of the deck can be support and removal - something that goes well with black and red. It could be stax-y and midrange-y until you have the window needed to secure the win.

I Can´t afford most of the cards, but I can say that thanks to your video I found some new awesome cards that sinergyses insanely good and I wasn´t kwnoned about, so thanks.

Thanks! I'm glad you've been able to discover some new cards thanks to the video! Whenever possible I try to delve really deep into cards that have opponents turn they're heads sideways or just straight up grab the card because they've never even heard about them before. It's super satisfying!

But wait. Thornbite staff wouldn’t trigger because egg tokens cannot be put into a graveyard from play. They just disappear, so they die but are not put into a graveyard.

Actually, when a token dies it does trigger anything that cares about that card type dying. And, they do hit the graveyard; they just disappear from it immediately afterwards as a state-based effect. That's why cards like Rest in Peace specify tokens, because the token never going to the graveyard would never trigger anything that cared about it dying, because it goes to a different zone instead as a replacement effect. I went for Angels , Dinos and Eldrazi for my deck and it works fine so far . I do want to slot in a thornbite staff and enlightened tutor to make it better .

Loved the video and the brew, made me rethink my atla palani list. I just have one critic, imo your deck is missing alot of card draw to help you sustain, find lands and even the pices to make the deck work. The rest is on point, the idea and objective of the deck is very solid, if i'm not missing anything the decks just needs to add some draw.

Thanks! Yeah, I went a bit low on card advantage since I don't want to get stuck with lots of fatties in my hand. That being said, I could've probably maybe added a couple of more cards that at least synergize with drawing cards based on the power and/or toughness of those fatties cheated into play... I know, right? It does have a nice ring to it. I don't know if the name is with Mesoamerican phonetics, but it does roll off the tongue. Nest Tender is what sounds odd to me; I keep imagining a soft and gummy nest XD.

There's a Robot Chicken card?! I know It's not legal and very limited, but wow! I had no idea!

I know, right? It's crazy; there's only a couple in existence. It was basically a sticker on a card that WotC gave out to Robot Chicken people during an event where they were playing Magic. Had it been an actual printed card (because it was black-bordered and had the normal back), there would be no reason for it to not be legal. It's like 1996 World Champion. It's an actual black-bordered printed card with a normal back. If it were taken out of the trophy, there's no reason it shouldn't be legal in eternal formats because it complies with the rules of a card. Now THAT would be a crazy commander.

Some of my favorit techs are Etali Primal Storn what is better the get all card youe oppoennt might have great addition as wel are savage ventmaw aurelia the warleader vhorinclex primal hunger because ic and my personal favorit realm razer nothing more fun then to crack an egg then to get a card which says no one has lands until this creature dies bonus points if you play artifact ramp

That sounds epic! My favorite tech with Realm Razer is following it with Oblivion Sower. You gain control of all exiled lands from an opponent. Then, even if Realm Razer leaves the battlefield, that opponent in particular won't have any lands. Either way, you get to have lands while everyone else doesn't.

@@TheCommanderTavern hehe yes it does might add oblivion souwer to my deck list btw can you explain me why fetchlands are so good i now deck filtern is important but you lose basically important landrop especially if your deck is color heavy

btw i found out a combo you can play in atla if it work so how i think it works the cards you neat are the following arashin warpost a dragon nothing particalur but he says every time he dies he goes on top of the deck blasting station and atla and thornbit staff + ashnod altar the combo works use atla to creat an egg sac the egg to the altar altar flips arashin warpost sac arashin to blasting station wrins and repeat until anyone is dead

dragullong blackfang You don’t lose a land drop because a fetchland replaces itself. Also, all fetchlands are essentially dual lands when first used because in multicolored decks you can get what you need. In a tricolored deck, two fetchlands are enough to get you access to the 3 colors of your deck.

Take away all of the fetches, original dual lands, and legal moxes and it's price drops by almost 80%. Not only do you not need this mana base for the deck to run, but a lot of people have these lands and even if they didn't, lots of people proxy them. Also, this mana base is pennies to the dollar in MTGO (and free in Cockatrice). This deck is also more expensive now because the eldrazi titans exploded in price since I released this video. Even though I am not a budget channel by any means (there are already plenty of those), I also don't believe in including super expensive cards just to further "optimize" a deck. There comes a point where cards like The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Moat, etc. are no longer playing pieces and they're collectibles. So even if I had any of them, no way would I risk playing them in a deck and getting them ruined. For example, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is amazing in this deck but I didn't include it solely because of its price in paper. I always provide the most optimal deck I personally brew and test in order to give people ideas on how to brew their own, all while keeping in mind that only the mana base is as optimized as possible since that is the easiest thing to swap out if someone hasn't been playing long enough to have original duals. So, for those who do have them or proxy them or play online, can see that it's okay to play with them. I don't gatekeep.

@@burnsboy101 Now worries, I understand. I get surprised by prices all the time, too. In 2013, when the Nekusar precon came out (a wheel deck, mind you), Wheel of Fortune was just $11. Now it's over $280. Gold-bordered Gaea's Cradle was about $5 - probably less. Now that version, which isn't tournament legal, is over $130. And even then the one I have I got for about $20 a couple of years ago. Prices nowadays are crazy.

@@burnsboy101 Also, this deck was made when the precons were spoiled. So a card I want to suggest for you if you're planning on building her, is Maskwood Nexus. Makes all your creatures eggs just like Mirror Entity. So it's an amazing way to have two of the same effects in the 99.
