Delta retired their original DC-9s in 1993, then re-inherited a big fleet of them from Northwest in 2008.

Some good footage on a warm, breezy day at ATL. BTW, the Continental Boeing 737, the one departing at the end of the clip, is a real rarity. It is a 100 series model! First in the fleet of Lufthansa, this jet was acquired by PeopleExpress, then became a Continental jet after Frank Lorenzo's CO bought out PE. The resulting labor strife nearly shut down the USA's entire aviation system. At least Continental fared better in the long term than did Eastern.

Wonderful work, taking me back to the last of the great days. We saw such a variety of aircraft in the early 90's, please let me kno where I can find more.

Thanks for the memories! 5/5!! The only video of a 737-100 I've ever seen on KZbin! I never did fly on a Tristar, but Ioved the DC-10!!

I only got to see what I call the true golden days (ending at about this period) of jet aviation as a little kid...they came to an end right around the end of the 1990s. I was about four years old at the time this video was made and remember when STL was 727 heaven.

UPS still flies the DC-8, i was in new orleans two days ago and we had to hold short of the runways because a UPS DC-8 was taking off and last time i was there, i saw one land while waiting for my plane to get there
@UALDC1015 жыл бұрын
No, I only listed the airliners that are no longer flying with those airlines. At the time I uploaded this, UPS was still flying DC-8s. I also didn't list the Delta MD-88s.

Gone are the days when you could get that close to planespot at Hartsfield...now you have to go to the North terminal parking deck...and you don't get that great a view....or rent a room at the hotel by the runway....

The Continental 737 at the end of the video has those extra air intake/vent things on its engines, just aft of the nacelles. Haven't seen too many of those! The plane looks kinda stubby too...even stubbier than the -200! Might it be a -100?? I know that boeing didn't build a ton of -100s, but i think that continental got their hands on a few of 'em b4 they expired. Awesome vid! thx for sharing

I was thinking the same thing. I think it is a 737-100
@WhateverMcCoy8 жыл бұрын
+bestpilot98 Looks like a 737-100 inherited from the PeopleExpress merger. The vents were, as far as I know, standard on all earlier JT8Ds on the 737 and they provided additional intake air at high power settings. The 737-200ADV sported redesigned intakes that eliminated the need for them.

the L10 and MD 11's are also Gone !! .... Im glad my parents worked for Delta During the Time these Great Airplanes were in Service !!!! .. I MISS THESE PLANES A LOT !!! And ASA had Prop Engine Planes !!!! .... and Eastern Express Airlines was bought by cotenental
@UALDC1015 жыл бұрын
Both actually. The one at the beginning is indeed an MD-80 (I only tagged the birds no longer being operated), but the one on approach later is a DC-9, as indicated by the shorter fuselage and cone tail fairing. Delta operated DC-9-32s up until 1993 I believe (ironically, they now operate DC-9s again after the NWA merger, only they're the -51s now).

Delta I thought got some DC-9s when the merged with Northwest? Have the retired them as well?
@UALDC108 жыл бұрын
+stitch16261 Delta had yet to take over Northwest when I uploaded the video, and those DC-9s have now been gone since early 2014.
