Something So Magnificent during this era! The Visual Art Deco, The Electric Age of Technology And the mysterious Transitional Gateway Into the Modern World!! The First Time in many ways Man-Kind was successfully able to defy Nature, Sickness, and the Darkness Of The Night!! It brings tears to my eyes when I hear the Brilliant sound of this organ shine as it is like the sound of that defiance and Joy of those voices all crying out against that darkness that we are all now free from!!

The larger organ is currently under restoration. I took a private tour of both organs and I was able to hear both. The larger organ's right side has issues(mostly tuning and leaking issues)but is playable. Money is tight and it takes alot of time to get things done. The left stage chamber has a huge portion removed and is being restored right now. The Curator said it will be awhile for it to be restored. However, the smaller organ is almost completely restored and sounds good.

Trying to visualize that with so many pipes, do many of them just sit there waiting for their feet to get hot with fire so they can scream. I mean it has such a huge selection of pipes, are the trustees and caretakers going to cycle through them every now and then. I guess I should take the intro to organ construction at my alma matter, O.U. The locaton of the American Organ institute. They have a large pipe manufacturing shop, a console shop, an assembly shop, leather shop, and storage area with numerous partial theatre organs waiting their turn. OU has started jamming pipe organs in just about any space they can find. I tell you I got my degree there about 6 years too early.

@poopingeneral The Grand Ophecleide works too. It is loud, but from the stage or the console, it is not deafening. The left main chamber has a huge section out of it for repair and the upper levels aren't functional. The space in the chambers is really tight. The wood used is really beautiful. The people in charge are really nice and encourage people to take a tour of it. And the smaller ballroom organ is almost completely restored. It sounds really good. Sorry if my posts are long :)

This instrument is awe inspiring! Not only in sound but the pure magnitude of its unsurpassed size and these photos show a glimpse of what the public never will see? Those pipes must have cost a fortune to make and i believe there are more than 33,000 of them! How much of this work in progress is playable in this year 2022? The pure cost of its restoration/ up keep must be taken stock of too? There will never be another and lets be honest could one be built today?
@MultiBlue7512 жыл бұрын
@poopingeneral The tour I took was about 2 hours. It is huge! The right side main chamber was somewhat operational. I did get to hear that. My father knows the curator so I was able to just play notes or chords LOL. I don't play piano, but I know just basic things to make notes. It was out of tune, but it sounded reasonably good. For its age, most of it is in pretty good shape. The big 64 foot pipe works well and has a deep vibrating sound.

I remember hearing this organ as a very young child (1950s) and being amazed at the power and seemingly endless reverb in the massive space. It is pitiful that it has fallen into such disrepair. A roof replacement could have saved most of the water-damaged chambers that now will cost 20 times what a new roof could have prevented. I find subtle irony in that the two largest pipe organs in the world are within 60 miles of each other. Was it to compete with the Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia?
@sigglass21834 жыл бұрын
Were all the organ chambers functional in the 1950s?
@praestant812 жыл бұрын
I think you may be confusing this a bit with the Wanamaker organ which did start it's life as a 5 manual built by LA Art. The Midmer-Losh of ACCH however, was designed from the beginning to be huge with all of its uniqueness.

***** It's actually quite amazing the organ had the beautiful tone that it does have considering the layout of the convention space. What doesn't sound better in a cathedral? Still, I love the softer playing on this organ and I'm thrilled it's going again. I use the 'Cathedral' reverb setting on my computer's Sound Blaster card all the time to listen to various 'dry' recorded organs. [If in Sound Blaster-open Creative,click Audio Console, then EAX, then 'Cathedral' & adjust the slider for mix].

There is still a lot left to be done, although work on the Right Stage chamber is close to completion, i believe, and most (or all) of the Swell chamber has been removed for cleaning and tuning. So progress is being made.

@danielmkubacki once the swell organ is back in after restoration and the dead magnets in the right stage are fixed, 1/3rd of the organ will be playable. Progress may be slow, but on a project of this scale, it is going to be, the swell organ alone has around 4 or 5 thousand pipes.

Does anyone know the prognosis of this behemouth ever acheiving even close to 100%? Pretty doubtful I'd think considering it never even has been, but it would be something to see. @MegaMobass4 жыл бұрын
As far as I am aware there aren’t any recordings of galleries 1-4 or the echo and fanfare as the relays for galleries 2, 4, echo, and fanfare are in the ceiling, and were subsequently damaged when the hurricane happened, long before any commercial recordings happened. The “Bach on the biggest” was recorded in ‘55 I believe and there was about as much playable then as is now. However I could be entirely wrong, but from what things I’ve been able to gather the fanfare and echo haven’t been heard since ‘44 and likewise with galleries 1-4
