In this video we will explore ponds, bogs and swamp forests along the Connecticut/Rhode Island border containing Atlantic White Cedar. Along the way we will study it's bark, foliage and cones and compare them to Northern White Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar.

This is great! Thank you. My old neck of the woods and miss the deciduous forest of Connecticut very much and have been a fan of the Atlantic White Cedar since I was a kid in scouts.

Thanks for watching...Scouting was also a great experience for me as we camped every month of the year and learned about nature firsthand while hiking and camping!

This is a great lesson on the Atlantic White cedar in both the natural history of the tree in the eastern forest as well the soil chemistry related the geological/glacial history of the area. Fair play to you!

Glad you enjoyed this video...The Long and Ell ponds preserve shown in this video is one of the most unique areas in New England for plants and geology.

Beautiful hike, have to put that on my list. A lot of Atlantic White Cedar here in the Hockomock Swamp and smaller surrounding swamps of southeast Massachusetts.

Thanks for watching! I would definitely recommend both sections of trail I used to record these cedars. The Long and Ell ponds preserve has some very impressive rock formations and is quite popular with hikers. There are equally impressive cliffs and wetlands along many of the trails that straddle the Connecticut/Rhode Island border. Southeastern Massachusetts has many cranberry farms that may have harbored Atlantic White Cedar in the past. Good Luck

Another great video, I really appreciate the time you spend putting these vids out there, some of these northeast or Atlantic coast trees I’ve never saw in person. A video on the shingle oak would be good in the future, I’ve always found it interesting being the only oak to have toothless and lobeless leaves that I know of

Thanks for watching Bobby! Glad you enjoyed this set of clips on Atlantic White Cedar...I greatly enjoyed exploring these natural areas in seach of these trees. Since then I have seen many more in my travels as they are easier to spot in the winter. Ironically I have rarely found Shingle Oak even when hiking in it's natural range. I believe it is more common in Midwestern States that had more natural prairies. I would be glad to add it to this channel when I am hiking in those areas.

@@barkinuptherighttree4698 yes shingle oak does seem to be more Ohio valley. In my area of north east KY the closest I’ve saw it is in extreme southern Scioto and Lawrence county Ohio, right along the Ohio river along the rocky hill sides mixed a lot with chestnut oak in that area at least, there’s an almost continuous stand there that stretches several miles near Hanging Rock OH right along US 52, I know in several of your vids you’re near southern Ohio. Thought I’d mention it

Thanks for the locations for finding Shingle Oak Bobby. I have hiked many times in the Shawnee State Forest west of Portsmouth but mostly in the leafless months when Shingle Oak would be less distinctive. I recall finding it in some of the parks and along roadsides near Harrison Ohio. From what I have read it is more common in areas with partial or full sun so I will keep this in mind when recording it for this channel.

@@barkinuptherighttree4698 you’re welcome and yes the areas I’ve saw it in were definitely full sun, south facing hillsides. I know the Wayne National Forest is just north of where I’ve saw shingle oak and there’s a couple of trails around Lake Vesuvius that might be a location to check out

trees in this family are very adaptable and they can be much more widespread.

Thanks for watching...ceratainly Eastern Red Cedar is quite common also I am starting to find shrub sized Common Juniper on my hikes. Common Juniper lives up to it's name as it is found throughout the northern hemisphere!

Interesting that your specimen of Atlantic white cedar did not seem to have white margins on the scales, which is noted as an ID mark in some places. Here in southern RI, the specimens I examined so far also lack the white margins. I appreciate you making these videos! I enjoy them and find them to be helpful.

Thanks for watching Chris...I did not notice any white scale margins on the foliage of the Atlantic White Cedars in this video but I wasn't really looking for them either. I will certainly look closer next time I am hiking near a Cedar swamp. One thought is that these white margins are less noticable in the winter or when the new growth has hardened off for the winter? Thanks for raising the question and glad you enjoyed the video.
