I'll never forget the first time I saw this video on MTV back in '89. I stopped everything and was just glued to the TV. "Who are these guys? There's a 7ft tall black guy with a mohawk singing like a banshee. There's a short, unassuming little white guy totally tearing it up like a beast on the guitar and an incognito drummer who is so in the pocket it is stuff of legend. This is the greatest band I've ever heard!". The next day I went to the record store and bought "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" and "Out of the Silent Planet". Just like that, one video was all it took. I became a diehard fan and haven't stopped all these decades later.

After Faith, Hope, Love their self titled album never got proper attention for the masterpiece it is. As an armchair quarterback, I would say "Black Flag" was a poor choice for a single when you had "Not Just For The Dead" on the same record. I realize some people will say " That's Ty singing lead again. He's not their best lead vocalist. And yes, he's white, too" And those things are technically true. Both Ty and Doug trade the lead singer role in this song. The most important lyrics in the song "Will it be? Can you see? Are you free?" And the hook, are all sang by Doug Alone. I see him as the lead, even though Ty sings the verses. Vocals and harmonies from all 3 are what makes this band so great. I didn't even mention that incredible guitar sound from that amp. Which is merely icing on a delicious cake.

Greatest band of my life for 40 years now. If I can walk, I'm going to see them in September. I've had some heart, health and back problems the last five years of my life which has really wrecked my quality of life. I'd love to take my wife to see them live while they're still touring. She lovea them too. A couple of them went to my almamater, Evangel College in Springfield MO. I have a few fond memories of hanging out with Dug back when they were called The Edge, then Sneak Preview. But, he wouldn't remember me. I don't look at all like I used to. To the contrary, these guys have aged so well, and they're music is timeless!!!

As an ex-bandmate once said, “You’re a Drummer with the soul of a Guitarist…”I took Guitar lessons first, but I didn’t have the patience with my thick hands/fingers. I put Steve Howe at #1 for his overall versatility, but Ty Tabor is, without a doubt, the most purely talented guitarist I’ve seen since 1987. His 12-string work on “Legal Kill” is great, particularly during the outro. I have seen King’s X 27 times (I’m from Houston), and they’re just otherworldly in so many ways. They're the tightest band I’ve ever seen, on record and live, and Tabor was also a drummer growing up, so it makes sense that they’re so locked. Plus the fact they’ve played together SO LONG. And, Jerry Gaskill NEVER overplays the drums, generally matching his kick drum to Doug’s Bass notes during single-note sections. Very minimalist, yet very interesting. So, ANYWAY, Steve Howe/Ty Tabor/Alex Lifeson/Elliot Easton/Randy Jackson would probably be my Top 5, with a shout to Tom Morello and Reb Beach. The top 2 never change, but there have been so many great Guitarists since the 70s, that it’s hard to decide!Cheers!

I met Doug and Ty on the Gretchen tour..... They say never meet your heroes but I loved Kings X so much.... That was the soundtrack of my subconscious.... They were such humble guys, they were mystified by the love.... The UK and Europe were mad for them... Ty gave me some guitar strings and they signed a $10 dollar note for me..... I'd hung backstage at gigs but only the Stranglers were aware of their Fans.... But Kings X should have been big, like Faith No More were going and Metallica and the Angst ridden Nirvana. But I knew i was in a special club, a sect of the Enlightened, the real believers.... Doug was a consummate rocker, I spilt Beet on his red Militaryseque jacket and he thanked me!!!! What a band. What a sound . What a fervent 20+ fan would do for their band.... Kings X were mine....

I used to have a copy of them live on cassette, though not sure what concert it was. But thanks for posting that. And the album was Fire Down Under not Below in case others read this who aren't familiar with the band. 35 years later and never remember for sure if it's Under or Below. Go figure.

Some high school friends and I drove from Lake Charles to Houston to be in this video. What a great day, and these guys were top notch. Very down to earth. I still remember when this video debuted on MTV and we all huddled around to see if we could find ourselves in it. Our three seconds of fame would come at 3:49-3:52. Good times.

I just discovered Black The Sky yesterday morning. That was my introduction to them. I feel like an idiot because a friend told me over a decade ago when we were in school that it was her favorite band. Never checked it out until it came on spotify at random. Criminally underrated is very accurate!

“Black The Sky” is an AWESOME song, from an AWESOME, and VERY ANGRY album. It’s one of those songs where the pain just drones on and on. Jerry doesn’t overplay the drums (ever), giving space for all that beautiful Guitar HEAVINESS and Vocal pain to bleed through. I venture to guess it’s a song about Doug’s struggle with living in the closet as a Christian (at that time, may he return one day) and how hard it was to do such a thing. There are MANY references to this struggle on the “Dogman” album, and it’s heartbreaking because it’s just a fact that many people are BORN with the biology of homosexuality (my guess is around half). So, what does one do, especially f they’re a Christian? The song is awesome, as is most of the album.It’s my favorite King’s X album because of the change in Producer from Sam “Embezzler” Tayor to Brendan O’Brien. He gave them that deep, hard sound, the embodiment of “Heavy Music”, which they invented anyway, that they had needed, especially since “Faith, Hope, Love”. “Don’t Care” is another emotionally menacing song, and the drumming on the outro is fantastic, as are Ty and Doug’s timing while Jerry solos a bit…right on time. “Pillow” is another soul-searching song with gut-wrenching Guitar tone. WOW. Cheers!

Totally. They are amazing. I have always thought that the band name didn't help them. Sure, it should be the music and not the name of the band that does the talking for a band. But it isn't the greatest name. But what I think really hurt them was that they were labelled as a christian band in the beginning of their career. That definitely hurt them...big time.

My ex and I used to run into the lead singer all the time in the ‘90s all over Houston at Cactus Records once but primarily at Vinyl Edge. One of the coolest local rock stars and bands ever and that’s saying something for Houston’s 90s rock scene. My ex (May he RIP) and I had all their stuff and quite a bit of it was signed by him and other band members wo even asking before we ever left the store and afaik they were just customers as well. They were great live too!

Like Doug Pinnick, I was raised by my Southern Baptist grandmother. The day I got the news my grandmother passed away, as her executor. I had to get on the road to her house immediately. To keep from crying (as it is dangerous to drive even straight roads, let alone through mountains, with tears blurring your vision(, I decided to pass the time of the 6 hour drive by starting necessary calls. I found it truly bizarre that I only got to hear one song in its entirety that day, and it was THIS song!

I've followed music for years and even worked for a promoter, but this is the first time I've ever heard this song. How did I miss it? I was just thinking how bad music sucks right now, and was hoping for something innovative, then this song came on the radio. I actually smiled thinking I found a new band to follow, only to find out they're an old band to follow. I'm still smiling though. I already knew Living Colour, but now excited to go look up all the King's X music. Feels like when I discovered Linkin Park or Godsmack. Feels good.😃

bands are not underrated, nor are they overrated. They are what they are, they achieved the status which they deserved. Just because you personally like a band more than most people do doesn't mean they are underrated...it just means most people don't love them as much as you do.

When I first fell in love with King's X I was a fundy christian. I always wished they were more open in their beliefs. Later I heard the live version of this song, and Dug's little sermon was eye-opening. This song isn't what you think it is. I, for one, am so glad that Dug came out and only wish him much love and happiness. He's a minister of the church of rock and roll and that's all I need or want from him.

@jamesrockford2626
@jamesrockford2626 8 жыл бұрын
Jsalrulz no 90% of bands are not influenced by the Beatles. The Beatles are soft and the whole psychedelic melancholy thing is goofy as hell. King's X had a little of that going on. + Ty was a little too much into the John Lennon peace love and hope b.s. By the late 80s people were just sick of that cliche' shit. Give love a chance!!!! All you need is Peace!!! that Lennon shit was cheezy. That's why Grudge hit so big, it was rooted in darkness like Black Sabbath and Zeppelin and not the Beatles. If King's X was more like Sabbath or Zep in the beginning they would have been fine. But only the Dogman album had that vibe. And then for some reason after Dogman they went back to being like the Beatles and all that 60s shit.

mrromantimothy I think people grossly over overstate the Beatles influence. Blues, R&B, Funk, Metal do not care about the Beatles. That stuff came from 50s artists and before. Mozart, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Elvis etc... Plus what about country music? country s one of the biggest styles of music in America. How did the Beatles influence that? There is absolutely no current artists influenced by the Beatles.

Weird how this classic song isn't played on the radio anymore. It's almost forgotten. Yet people complain about music today with new artists and don't know this band or song. Oh, that's right, the media didn't tell them to like this. So they keep listening to no hit wonders like Bruno Mars.
