Atlas V STP-3 Launch Highlights

A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket carrying the Space Test Program (STP)-3 mission for the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command lifted off on Dec. 7 at 5:19 a.m. EST from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

@@barrywhite9114 The Atlas naming scheme uses a 3 number designation. First number: 4 or 5, denoting that it is either a 4 or 5 meter payload fairing. Second number: 0-5, denoting the number of solid rocket boosters. Third number: Always 1 other than in the case of Starliner missions, they are a 2. Denotes the number of engines on the second stage. The Atlas V 551 configuration is the most powerful configuration.

It was amazing as I drove up HWY 154 as Santa Barbara was fogged in, I saw the Falcon IV launch directly West & pulled over. The missile made a high arc directly South 60 miles down range & I lost visibility behind the hillside. I never witnessed the first stage separation, but several friends from Goleta to Santa Barbara and myself heard the loud window rattling as the first stage ignited & landed on an ocean platform somewhere around the Channel Islands to the South.
