In a shocking incident on April 20, 2024, the Nagaland State Cooperative Bank’s Zunheboto Branch was robbed of Rs. 21,57,500 during the Lok Sabha elections. The robbery involved two bank staff members: clerk Subong Lee Sangtam and ATM caretaker's husband, Vikiye.The theft was discovered when officials noticed a cash shortfall, prompting a police investigation. CCTV footage showed the suspects using umbrellas to hide their faces during stormy weather, leading to their swift identification. Law enforcement successfully recovered approximately 94% of the stolen money, totaling Rs. 19,22,500.Both suspects were dismissed from their jobs and will be barred from future employment in the banking sector. The involvement of bank employees in this heist has deeply unsettled the local community, especially since the bank manages funds for MGNREGA, Self-Help Groups, and various organizations. The case now moves to the judiciary, raising serious concerns about trust in local banking institutions.
