Just a little correction: Steam festivals (next fest, curated events etc) are one of the best ways to get an influx of wishlists on your game. There is no 'winning', it's not a competition. The standard practice among indie devs is to submit your demo for Next Fest when it is in its most polished state prior to release, Steam will boost your store page and demo within its algorithm and generally you will see an increase of 4x-10x on your daily wishlist numbers. Email subscribers are great but they are not a substitute for Steam wishlists, if you launch without significant wishlists your game will get buried.

I am older than most of your viewers and most of the software you mention I have mastered but for decades I have put off the dream of making games. I would say the hardest block was getting past the coding part. I was a software developer but game coding is a different monster. Thanks for the advice and I do remember Flash I used to teach flash 4 and I used flash back in 2001 - 2008. My goal is to complete a game this year. I have accumulated many ideas of games and started them but I have not completed them. Coding was more the issue than the fear of completing it and releasing it. I already have the thick skin but I will start releasing crappy games. Even at my age it can be a learning experience. We will see at the end of this year how many games I can release.

18:50 I'm scared to release a game because I don't see the money path, not because of bad reviews. It's hard to spend your time finishing something if you know it won't pay out because it's "crappy". So then I want to make a good game and scope creep sets in... I think I need to find a balance, or be comfortable with making a slice of a good game, or a 1-level demo of a good game?

The thing I'm concerned about making an online course is the amount of additional time that would be required afterward. I heard the reason David Wehle quit making KZbin videos is because he was burnt out over the amount of support he had to provide on his game dev course. Can you give us an idea of what kind of work is involved after you put out a course like Fulltime Game Dev or Game Dev Unlocked?

I tried to start a game Dev company 14 years ago. I tried a few times. Ahhhh, I wish I just kept at it and had good mentors and plans. I spent so much money and I just refused to release a bad game. :( Had 10k followers on facebook for the game I wanted to release back then.

Greate work. How do I know at what age my game is rated when releasing? Like in my country it might be 16 and above but maybe laws in other countries say otherwise. Is there a way or company to rate the recommended age of my game?

Thanks for the info! "Unity has a lions share of the market". If ONLY looking at 3D - might Unity still have the lions share? any suggestions as where to view this data? For more context - I'm making 3D game assets for the Unreal marketplace, wondering if I (potentially) would get equal or more sales on the Unity Asset Store?

46:45 40k people in a mailing list is something that only the 0.01% will manage to get, unfortunately. It's extremely rare to get these numbers. My game went viral in August, with a reach of more than 30 million people in Brazil, and I got precisely 125 mailing list subscribers. People won't open your website or mailchimp link and subscribe. It's sad. I know the value of a mailing list because in 2015, my startup MVP also went viral, and I got 8k companies into the mailing list. But it was a B2B product, not B2C or even less entertainment. Everything was an immediate success because of that. But for a game that is being insanely hard for me.

This is the flaw with the "realistic" mindset. You set your expectations low, you'll do less. The focus isn't the reward, it's how effective you can design your game to be enjoyable and marketable.

My only issue with this video is advice to release 2 crappy games, that is the worst advise to give a new game dev in 2022, never ever ever under any circumstances release a crappy game just for a payday, that goes against game development. That will follow you forever.

I also think this could be said in a better way than 2 crappy games. I get what he's saying about getting 2 small projects released while learning the engine but I wouldn't just say, "release 2 crappy games THEN focus on getting your next game perfect" I would say work on keeping a small scope on your first couple projects to learn the engine and get them out then look at making a broader scale game with perhaps more funding.

I just don't quite agree with. 2 small manageable games on the other hand I agree with. But it's just what he thinks works I guess

He’s working on a 3d game which is a huge learning curve for him, he’s working on his game dev school material, doing other marketing things, and being a husband and father on top of all that. I think that’s why he has mainly done live webinars like these for the last few months rather than recorded videos. He can’t do it all.
