Thank you Gough Lui for your foresight and taking the time to setup your equipment to record the final 5 minutes of analogue TV. The song and cartoon at the end was played, as I remember, every night at 'station close' back in the 1970's & into the 80's when to TV stations in Australia had yet to progress to their 24 hour non-stop format they have today. That song "My City of Sydney" was sung by American singer-songwriter & actor Tommy Leonetti (1929-1979). He hosted a late night Sydney TV variety show in 1969 & 1970. It's a wonderful song that described Sydney back then and tugs at the heart of most long term 'Sydney Siders'.

“My City of Sydney” sums up what we’ve lost. Sydney is cold, hard, difficult, overdeveloped, expensive, The parking meters and crowded beaches are unpleasant if not actually hostile. Road Rage is everywhere. Beautiful buildings demolished. Hopeless public transport. My Mansions, Greenspaces gone. Riverside parks turned into exclusive gated estates. If you remember Sydney up until the Mid 1990’s, you get this. I’m not even that old.

In America, it was a total mixed bag. Some stations did an old-fashioned sign-off sequence, some actually had their news programs take you behind the scenes to watch the engineers make the change (even though you wouldn't get to fully see it unless you were on cable/satellite, since the switch-off also briefly cut the digital terrestrial signals), others still simply had their news programs warn you when it was about to happen, and finally comes the group that just made the change with no ceremony or warning.

That's a good bit of trivia there. Except, ATN7 was never on UHF, and certainly not on a channel higher than 51. In fact, all of the metropolitan Seven Network stations used VHF channel 7 for analog broadcasting, and then commenced their digital broadcasting on channel 6. The VHF set of frequencies (excluding Bands I and II, which consist of channels 0 to 5A) are still in use for television in Australia, and mainly for the metropolitan areas of Australia. It's mostly the regional and rural areas that used UHF, although I couldn't off the top of my head tell you whether any of the stations in the regions and rural areas had ever occupied any of the channels between (and including) 52 and 69. There plausibly could have been, but I cannot be sure of this.

Digital TV is good for people who just sit on their asses in front of the TV and don't care about what's going on around them, they just want a lot of channels and a good picture, which they have with DVB-T/DVB-T2, but when a storm starts, for example, digital starts to chop, while with analogue the picture quality just gets much worse. So if, God forbid, a war came, a hurricane was approaching or something, it would be more difficult to inform people via digital TV. You're thinking, why can't we have digital and analog at the same time? Well, that would leave no room for 5G and 4G, so you'd have to use 2G and 3G internet globally. Anyone who wants lots of programming and HD video should just buy satellite or cable. But people today are too spoiled and the few durable analog channels just aren't enough. I'm sorry there is such a thing as digital TV.
@KaleunMaender77 Жыл бұрын
That's the thing I've found utterly disturbing about digital terrestrial television. For one, on the technical level, it's an "all or nothing" affair; you either have a good signal which doesn't glitch half the screen off and the sound out, or you have nothing. On the practical level, sure, we can have a number of virtual channels on one frequency (though I believe there's a limit to how many channels can be output using the same frequency). In Australia, each of the five networks has/is (depending how you look at it) its own multiplex essentially, so that allows for, say the ABC to broadcast five SD channels, one HD channel, and then ten audio channels, of which five of them are simulcast AM and FM radio broadcasts (with the digital delay, naturally 😄), all on the one frequency. In the metropolitan areas of Australia, there are 39 TV channels and 21 radio channels. Of those five TV channels and three radio channels are duplicated, so in reality we have 34 separate TV channels and 18 separate radio channels. Of these, the main channels of each of the five networks broadcast on both SD and HD, and those are the only ones that broadcast on both SD and HD, while each of their secondary channels is either SD or HD. So that means we have 29 unique channels and 18 unique radio channels for TV. That's all well and good, but here's where we run into the main gripe with digital TV. On the level of viewer satisfaction, much of what is broadcast on terrestrial TV is absolute garbage. The old adage "quality over quantity" really screams here. I remember when I grew up only having four analog channels to watch, and I adored much of what was on offer on each of the channels. The networks really put effort into either commissioning or buying proper programs that people actually might like to watch, which were beautiful works of performing art. Nowadays, it's just "cheaper" to commission and buy reality TV... apparently. The amount of idiocy in these reality shows, I believe, is contributing to the devolution of the human psyche and the decrease in the average intelligence quotient. And beyond that, I feel that too much TV is moving into the smutty category, which doesn't do anything for me except repulse me. Even now, at times when kids are home from school, the restriction on which programs are allowed to be broadcast at which times of the day seems to have been relaxed. It's not like they're going to show nudity necessarily, but some of these programs seem to be verging on soft porn. So unnecessary. So stupid. Analog TV might have seen this tsunami of reality and smutty TV come to be the norm, but digital TV presents it in such utter 1080i clarity, that it leaves nothing to the imagination. That's why I don't watch terrestrial TV anymore. I'm better off watching KZbin on my TV than sticking an antenna into the jack. There is nothing of value that I would want to watch on terrestrial TV. I even have gotten into the habit of watching TV through the actual streaming platform of the network that broadcasts on terrestrial TV. It's not quite 50fps yet, but I'm sure they'll figure it out at some stage 😅 If I ever win the lotto and build my own house, I am never using installing an antenna. There will not be an antenna jack in the wall. Terrestrial TV is dead to me.

It depends more on the climate of said areas it’s shutting down in which can vary. I vaguely remember it being quite a warm day when it ceased transmission in my town which is quite close to Sydney.

If this channel on digital has a final sign off, in 2025 viewers will slow down, eventually in June 8 they had to shut down. But instead of the mother putting her joey to bed, she was too old and its about to die. The joey, now grown up, likes his mother used to do when he's a child, uses the T and N as a bed frame, A has the other, channel as a mattress, then puts his mother to bed. Then the joey puts the 7 as the blanket on her. The joey kisses his mother one last time And with tears in Sydney's eyes, he pulls the Curtin down one final time, as his mother dies of old age. Then the old analog tv, instead of saying goodbye, he said this. "Thank you for watching channel 7 for the past 69 years, now its time to say goodbye to it. Well laughed, cried,shivered, and smiled at the channel. Now that the mother has died of old age and due to low ratings we are forced to shut down forever. Thank you goodbye." - tv Than the e logo starts on and saying coming July 8,2025. When the e released, it was the end of channel 7.
