In mtg gameplay, Atogs characterised with ability to consume for a benefit. And for anything existing, there is an atog that would eat it. There is even an atog that eats time, making you skip your turn. Well, at least, there was. They are very old irl, and there haven't been new atogs for past 15 years or more, ignoring the changeling (who are all creature types at once).

I had this idea brewing in my head about a swarmkeeper ranger that was a mageslayer that would summon Atogs as the need of the different breeds were needed for their feeding habits. Untill I read the stat block. Still a cool concept for a bbeg

Whenever you decide to dip into mtg lore again, might I suggest the Kami of Kamigawa or the non-humanoid elementals of Lorwyn? They're both a take on an idea already present in dnd, that being concepts such as chaos or law can result in the creation of sentient creatures who embody them and can be found at every CR level.

Fighter with full plate and fine weapons chomp chomp, artificer with fantastical enchanted equipment chomp chomp, Druid who likes trees just a lot to much even by Druid standards chomp chomping. Everything gets eaten.

So this should have been obvious to me years ago (if not quite so many as that picture of the Psychatog knocked me back to), but Magic *begs* to be D&D settings. And it's emblematic of WoTC's sheer, disastrous incompetence recently that we only have official writeups for two, three of them? Innistrad is a Domain of Dread in all but name, with Sorin Markov as its unbound lord. Kamigawa is a setting they own the rights to (unlike Five Rings) that could make for a *fantastic* exploration of Eastern culture, at least a faux-Japanese one. Its modern Neon incarnation is perfect for modernized 5e rules that, like with so much else, have been left to players to construct. All these planes exist solely to sell bits of cardboard with pictures on them, I'm not arguing that. But I do not believe for a second there is not a ready market for people in love with the lore, who want to travel these planes in a more intimate way than paying two mana and tapping to attack. I have too many dear memories of things written ages ago to believe otherwise.

It's partially is. There've been mtg setting books and adventures. I especially like what they've done with Ravnica and Theros

There's definitely a lot of overlap in demographics. I've even seen it recommended by a lot of dnd players to not only get your artwork for tokens and backgrounds there but even opening up a random pack or hitting the random button on an mtg search engine (like scryfall) to get the inspiration flowing if you need it. Also, funny you mentioned Kamigawa since my plan is to make that my first one shot setting. Going to make it take place during the kami war and just have players fight waves of spirits to help me learn where everything is on roll20.

I know that animals can eat things that humans can't, and I know that humans can eat things that animals can't, but thanks for confirming for me that goats can't eat tin cans. I remember playing a video game of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire when I was young, and they asked which of these is poisonous to dogs. And instead of chocolate I chose peanut butter because I wasn't really thinking and at the moment, I was associating dogs having trouble getting down peanut butter with poison. I won't blame the fact that I was pressed for time in the moment, but that's how I learned about dogs and chocolate.

That original card art had such an unsettling look to it, like cursed Monty Python animation. Later updated art for it I chuckled how it looked like Smeagol did the Grimace shake challenge LOL Since these things mechanically are suppose to get stronger when fed artifacts (magical items) I always imagined them getting a little bigger but also growing additional bone spikes around the body too..at least how I imagined the original ones, didn't think much more about the later variants, but I guess the carrion eating ones would also make sense for that too.

Minor nitpick, but can you have multiple multiverses? Wouldn’t the multiple universes of one multiverse simple become a part of the other?
@Codeman193010 ай бұрын
I think cosmology might be a better word for the connections between the worlds and planes of D&D and the planes of MTG.
@Pyre10 ай бұрын
D&D has talked about this also. The concept is usually addressed by the idea that while the D&D multiverse is comparatively easy to travel through, reaching a different Material/Prime Material Plane is vastly more difficult.
@TheMightyBattleSquid10 ай бұрын
That's actually why pop culture has taken to using the term "omniverse" to basically say "yes, there are infinite universes in this multiverse but they're all small variations of the same stuff over X amount of time, whereas an omniverse is made up of many distinct multiverses, where bigger changes are allowed." Like DC and Marvel comics each have a multiverse but when they cross over for special events it's because theyre a part of the same Omniverse of comics.

You're gonna hate me for this... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmWqoKeibtuFfdUsi=wjqPuEPFNPV4A2b_ Timestamp 5:24 in that video is why the universes are separate from each other.
@almitrahopkins187310 ай бұрын
@@AJPickett That addresses universes, which are separate, like a single blade of grass. A multiverse is a group of universes, like a clump of grass. But a multiverse would also describe a lawn, made up of hundreds of clumps of grass.
