I am French and audiophile since my 16 years, I am 64, Athom is a very beautiful company of design and manufacture of speakers and loudspeakers, it is not very known abroad and it is really a pity, because their range of loudspeakers is enough to satisfy the very great majority of the audiophiles by offering a real musicality to them on all the styles of music and for budgets really much more accessible than certain marks which have completely delirious prices or the result with the listening is often very disappointing compared to the asking price! The GT1HDs have a great reputation in France. Combine them with one or two Rafale VR1x or VR2x subwoofers, and you get a huge sound that will literally bury audio systems at stratospheric prices! It's one of the rare brands that I can recommend buying with my eyes closed! Very nice shirt Steve !!!

Hi Steve - thanks for the review. I had the original Atohm GT1s from 2014. They were driven by a range of ams. The best was by the Devialet Expert 220 (as it became after upgrades) . The matching system (S.A.M.) between this amp and the GT1s needs to be heard to be believed. Greetings to you and yours.

A topic I would love to hear addressed is how does speaker design, and the design of amps enhance soundstage / depth / imaging etc. There must be specific components or layouts that enhance this area of music reproduction.
@scottchegg12092 жыл бұрын
Simple, use tube amps!
@FOH36632 жыл бұрын
Damn! That's a massive topic ... There's so much contributing to imaging and soundstage dimensionality. First, the individual drivers need to possess a non-lossy, nimble responsiveness with good decay characteristics... to allow the smallest recorded details like ambience and trailing edges of notes to be resolved. Avoid physical cabinet energy from corrupting the drivers output... conversely, avoid the drivers from introducing energy into the cabinet. Also, the driver's backwave energy must not return and corrupt the driver's primary forward output. A big issue is diffraction... poor baffle diffraction performance prevents a speaker from "disappearing" in addition to introducing peaks/nulls in the freq response. Overall freq response needs to be balanced octave to octave. The drivers need overall alignment and coherence after the wave-launch. Depending on the room's acoustics, controlled directivity can be beneficial... as well as matching directivity driver-to-driver. Essentially, compression free, high resolution, coherence, low noise, controlled wavelaunch. The tricky element is one I rarely see mentioned; lossy characteristic that plagues most all speakers. It's not distortion in the typical sense, it's omission of the details.

I used to listen to Macy Gray Stripped on Deezer, I think it is fantastic and superbly recorded. So I was quite disappointed not to find it on Tidal, which I'm using now. You said the record is now available on Tidal, but I still can't find it. In fact, there are no Chesky albums on Tidal, it's obviously a business decision that makes me think of switching back to Deezer. Also, 90% of my music files consists of classical music, and Tidal has a considerably smaller selection of classical music than Deezer. The only thing that still keeps me on Tidal is maybe slightly higher HiFi quality. Maybe...
