In woodshop for me there was a girl who seemed to be struggling slightly and my dad being a machinist and my grandpa a carpenter, i wasnt doing too bad. I got her number that day.

For best adhesion of body filler or hammering the dent back out, the panel should be stripped back to bare metal.

So grinding the metal is one of th3 necessary steps of surface prepping (yes it gives more adherence to the paint se it that was it harder to slip from a non smooth surface) Not an expert but I believe a good surface prepping has some 0.6 or 0.9 mm depth.
