n+l rule is used for this purpose..... If any orbital has less value of n+l than it will be filled first Following is the energy increasing order of orbitals: 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p

It will be more easier for me if you ask for the calculation of wave number for specific series. We know that Wave number = 1.09678 X 10 power 7 X [1/n1power2 - 1/n2 power 2] n1 is the initial position of electron in an orbit and n2 is the final position after excitation. By an Example: Suppose an electron jumps from first orbit to 2nd orbit by the absorption of certain amount of energy. We can calculate its wave number by the use of above formula: n1 = 1 n2 = 2 use these values in above formula wave number = 82.26 X 10powe5 m-1

Electrons are filled on increasing value of n+l rule... In other words if any orbital has less value of n+l rule than it will be filled first... n = principal quantum number l = azimuthal quantum number

It gives information about degenerate orbitals in a sub shell..... E.g p subshell has 3 degenerate orbitals px, py and pz. So there magnetic quantum values are -1,0,+1
