I.T. guy here stumbled across this video. The master caddy is literally just a SSD drive using standard SATA connectors. So good news you can use ANY external Sata adapter/connector to read that drive to your computer, or better yet, run an extended cable from your computers motherboard so you get full speed without using a USB interface. Many of these adapters have a dock like form factor and external power so it wont need the 2nd USB for power, and I find them to be more reliable. USB 3.0 is pretty fast, but for large files you will still see a significant difference directly connected to the SATA interface with a fast SSD drive.

Wow. I just bought the 7" inferno over the Ninja V. The reason is that I found that B&H was offering a better deal on the complete kit vs the kit version of the Ninja V. Of course I'm pairing this with a Nikon 810 (Which I bought 5 years ago as a DSLR) I'm now taking advantage of it as a 1080p video camera for recording corporate training sessions which is currently being done by someone on their smart phone. This video was very informative. Had I seen it prior, I may have opted for the NinjaV, but I'm extremely happy with the Inferno. I have a shotgun mic on top of the Camera and I've bought an arm that can attach to my tripod head (Manfrotto 502) to hold the Inferno. Of course a good shout out to B&H. A side note.... for my computer builds I tend to use Samsung Pro and Evo drives. The only problem... try finding one in stock. Lucky for me. I have a couple 250GB drives from an old build where I can at least do 20 min videos.

Seeing these recorders makes me want to see comparisons between footage captured with these versus the 10-bit and 12-bit RAW that Magic Lantern enables in the Canon 5D Mark III. Magic Lantern also offers waveforms and vectorscopes for use in preview and in recording standard footage. The advantage these recorders would have would be that their monitor screens are much higher resolution, much larger, and keep the focus and exposure aids enabled during recording. Nevertheless, a comparison on KZbin would be nice to see in the future. As much as I want dual pixel autofocus for video, I also want to get back to trying RAW recording, which my 5D Mark II could never quite do well enough for my liking even though the Magic Lantern developers seem determined to milk every ounce of performance out of that legendary camera. Thanks for the excellent comparison between these two devices and warning us about the overpriced pitfalls of some of the add-on options.

Yeah the thing that really gets me on here, which I didn't know, is that the HDMI CABLE needs to be a certain kind in order to get 4k 10-bit 60fps. It's crazy how little thing has to be correct in order to get these best image qualities. But it's good to know.

Great video. Will either of these units receive audio from the camera's built in microphone via the hdmi, so that I can synch in post with audio that I record separately on my external mic and audio recorder? Thanks again for a great comparison.

The dual USB ports on the reader there are for the old type of spinning drives. When you plug one in, it draws too much power and won't get up to speed then start reading. If you stick with SSD's, you shouldn't have to plug in the secondary. You can also pick up a cheap external SSD dock and pull the data off of that.

I have the Ninja V for use with my Nikon Z6. For use with the master caddy, I bought a SanDisk Ultra 3D NAND 2TB SATA III 2.5” SSD for $275, which works great on the Ninja V. For use with a Thunderbolt 3 MacBook Pro, I bought the StarTech.com USB C To SATA Adapter - for 2.5” SATA Drives External Hard Drive Cable for less than $19, which works just fine for importing video. It’s just USB-C, not T3, but it’s still very fast for getting the footage copied to my SSD RAID system. The quality of video captured on the Ninja V using the Apple ProRes codec is stunning. I agree with Michael that it’s a fantastic product!

I have been using Atomos recorders since the first Ninja 1. You don't need two USB ports to use the dock, unless you have a very old computer that will not supply enough power to run your drive. Batteries are a big concern. The Ninja V is very power hungry. You will need multiple large NPF batteries which makes the unit a bit unwieldy. I use an external battery and connect to the Ninja V with a dummy battery. I use the IndiPro PortaPak. The fan on the Ninja V is not a problem. When you power it on, you'll hear the fan kick in, but in a few minutes it settles down. You can record a few moments of this ambient noise and use an audio program to remove this, but I've never found this necessary. You are right to point out that these units are not "ready to go" out of the box. In the old days, they were more complete. Purchasers will need batteries and chargers, caddies and drives, HDMI 2.0 cables, and some sort of way to mount the unit. A lot of people are surprised by this. You are also very right to point out one of the main features of the units is the ProRes codec. This makes it possible to edit your footage without a super computer. SSD's are also the cheapest storage media. I edit right off the caddies without transferring the files. This is a big time saver. I watched this because there is a black friday bundle on the Inferno at Videoguys.com and I was thinking I might pick up a forth recorder as I do multicam event video.

@MichaelTheMaven thanks for the video it helped clear up some questions i had about the Ninja V. I recently purchased it and have a Sony A7 iii, and i would like to take advantage of the full capabilities of both. You mentioned in this video that if we want to be able to record in Raw that the Shogun is the option to go with. Does that mean the Ninja V is not capable to record Raw? I was a little confused by that. I would love to know how the western digital SSD is working for you with the Ninja V as well. I was gong to purchase the angle bird before i seen your video since I wasn’t to familiar with using the cases that come with the monitors. Thanks and i hope to see a follow up video of your setup if you haven’t already made one. 👍🏾

jonathan jenkins the western digital drive works great! Your hdmi recording ability is going to depend on your camera output. I think A7iii is 8 bit 4:2:2 is the limit. Atomos announced shortly after I made this video the Z6 will so pro Res raw on the ninja v with a firmware update, so that was a surprise. I imagine more cameras are coming but no it looks like the Atomos V will be doing pro res raw with the Nikon z 6 soon! It’s incredible news!

Why are you worried about the strenght of the XLR breakout cable? It's a LEMO connection and they ar sturdy af. You would break your cable quicker than that connector. Then why are you not worried at all about that 1 dollar HDMI adapter. Using that thing is asking for heaps of problems.

Hi, I am shooting with a Panasonic GH5 camera and a X 2 Anamorphic projection lens. When I shoot in 24p with the GH5 the Atomos Ninja Inferno allows me to de-squeeze image with 2 X 4:3 option. But when I shoot in 4K 60p with the GH5 the Ninja Inferno does not have 2 X 4:3 option. Selecting manual mode on my GH5 seems to allow correct de-squeeze aspect ratio for 4K 60p, but there is clearly light & image quality loss shooting in ‘M’ manual mode, as apposed to shooting in Movie mode on GH5, which has mode specific to shooting with an Anamorphic lens. I have latest V8.5 firmware, so update didn’t solve this problem. Any ideas why this is?

I bought this to go with the Panasonic GH5 which is geared towards video. The G9 is geared more for photo, particularly sports and fast action photography. Hi, could you please answer something for me as I'm very interested in this. Say for example if im using the Sony a7 iii with 4k 30fps output, will the ninja be able to record that in 4k 60fps? Is this how they work?
@professionalpotato4764
@professionalpotato4764 4 жыл бұрын
Nope. The recorder only records native frame rates, up to 60fps. The A7iii goes only up to 4k30. So you're limited to 4k30. Imagine a farmer pulling out carrots. He can only pull out 30 carrots per min. But if he has to carry it on his back, he's limited to how many carrots he can carry before running back and forth the farm (sensor) and warehouse (SSD/SD card). If he has a conveyor belt (HDMI) that delivers the carrots straight into the warehouse, he can unload more carrots. But he is still limited by his limit of 30 carrots per min, since his hands can only move at that speed. The chroma sub-sampling does go up to 8 bit 422, but you're only getting an upgrade from 420 to 422 which isn't much. The only big upgrade for colours is from 8 bit to 10 bit. Gerald Undone has a video showing the difference between 422 and 420. In real world use, it's hard to break the limitations unless you're turning the sky green and the grass pink. The advantage is, like what Michael said, the video saved in the SSD are much easier to edit, and hold better information, and potentially holds up better when you colour grade. Some of the cameras capable of 4k60 are cinema cameras, Panasonic, Fuji, and A7S3. Canon is a good camera that can make grilled cheese in between shots.

Thanks for the comparison review info. So, you don't get any audio via the hdmi connection out of the camera? Or is the audio into the Ninja V an additional audio track? And, what are the color space and bit depth converting from Sony a7s and a6500 via Ninja V?
@MMaven
@MMaven 5 жыл бұрын
The safest answer is “it depends”. Hdmi should support up to 8 channels coming out of the camera which can be monitored and recorded on the hdmi recorder, the input gives you 1 more track (l/r). In practicality, there are issues where the audio wasn’t synced or coming in at all, and in those cases I tend to want to feed it directly into the hdmi recorder vs going through the camera. Supported bit depths & chroma subsampling is usually in the specs of all cameras, I can’t remember what it is for the a7s (I think it’s 4K out 8 4:2:0. A6500 is same I think.

Whilst the Atomos Ninja V or the Ninja Inferno are capable of recording 1080p at 60fps, as to whether or not it's possible to record at this resolution and frame rate on the C300 Mk 1, depends on what configuration the camera's HDMI port is capable of sending out. I've checked the Atomos web site for supported recorders they recommend for the Canon C300, and the two models are the Shogun Flame and the Ninja Flame. For both the HDMI and SDI interfaces on the camera, the maximum progressive resolution given for 1080p is 30fps. It should be noted that there is time code included with the SDI output, but not the HDMI output, and if time code data is a must for post production work flow, then perhaps it may be worthwhile to consider confirming with Atomos if the Shogun Flame may be a better recommendation than the Ninja V or Flame models: www.atomos.com/cameras/canon-eos-c300 Here is a review by Philip Bloom on the Canon C300: philipbloom.net/blog/c300/ You may check with Canon and ask if they have any firmware or any necessary hardware upgrades available for your c300 Mk 1, to allow shooting with 1080p at 60fps; the Shogun Flame does support 1080p at 60fps: downloads.atomos.com/shogun-flame/Shogun_Flame_User_Manual.pdf

A little time on the batteries might have been useful. For some reason I call the two pin plugin a 'Sony' battery but I don't know why. I have batteries for a Lilliput monitor and a smaller series for a slider. Maybe they'd be suitable, maybe I'm supposed to know stuff like that ... thank you ... it was time well spent.

Jim Cochrane There are different size Sony batteries that will give you different amounts of time depending on how much you’re using it so it’s kind a hard to say exactly

A lot of noise about Ninja V, and i understand the exitment of all videomakers, but to be honest the screen size is close to my camera screen, so i dont see big advatnage for Ninja V . I bet that Inferno is much better option.

is the ninja v capable of recording 1080p in 100FPS/120FPS with the Sony a7III? Or is 1080P 50P/60P the limit?

I think you can only use the Atomos for monitoring in 120fps at 1080p with that setup. I believe that you then record internally to the a7iii. So monitor on atomos, record onto internal a7iii card.

And you'll only be seeing 60fps on the Atomos. I didn't make that very clear above lol

In your description you don't list the WD Blue 1TB, but show it being $139 at 7:00. It's actually $249 at B&H as of May 2019. Where did you find it for $139? www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1287124-REG/wd_wds100t1b0a_00h9h0_1tb_blue_sata_iii.htmlYou do however list the G Technology Caddy twice in the description.

Which one would be best for the Sony A73?
@dvents4363
@dvents4363 5 жыл бұрын
Ninja V but with the sony you dont get as much benefit as you would think using external recording. You get the pro res and can burn in some luts but I believe that with a little extra color is the only benefit besides the big screen.

This reader is total ripoff. You can buy Sata to USB cable for 2$. You can buy Sata to eSata cable for 3$ and it's faster and more reliable.
