Atomos Ninja V & Canon EOS-R - Setup Guide

Atomos instructional videos are always very good. For the less technically adept (like myself), they are super helpful for getting started. I will have to do both a photo and video shoot on an upcoming trip, and my time is limited. I have the Canon EOS R and the Ninja V, and I will have to be able to attach it quickly and start shooting right away. Thank you.

I would like to record 1080p content for my KZbin channel in ProRes, however, I read that the EOS R only outputs 10bit in 4K. When switching to 1080p it supposedly is only an 8bit output. What happens if I record an 8bit HDMI signal in ProRes, dose it make sense to record 8bit 1080p with the Ninja V?

I just learned this as well and it's keeping me from buying the Ninja V. About to purchase a EosR as we speak and I'm excited for how good this camera shoots 1080P and doesnt require us to shoot in 4K straight outta camera since the 1080p codec from canon as well as the bit rate is so good. But yeah shooting in 4k=wayyyyy bigger file sizes, which means larger memory cards needed, as well as crazy high rendering times. Hopefully there will be an update later and then I'll pick up the Ninja V.

Thanks for the video. How do I know the final file is recorded in 4.2.2 color? When inspecting the files it creates I don't see anything that says that. I see finder and fcpx saying the file has a "color profile HD (1-1-1)" but nothing says it's 422. I just want to make sure it's working! Also, do you know what the R menu item "HDMI HDR output" is for?

1. Cinema Gamut can't be sent trough HDMI, it isn't a standard, Rec/BT.2020 is needed. 2. For monitoring, use the "Legalize" option and apply the manufacturer LUT, so false color and white balance on the RGB Waveforms work as expected. 3. Recording LOG with "Legalize" reduces the dynamic range, use it ONLY for monitoring unless you use any other NLE editor that isn't Resolve, then, use "Legalize". In Resolve you can set the clip levels to full. 4. The Atomos although it can receive full range video, it uses a Rec.709 video range space, just like any other NLE, that is why the "Legalize" option is necessary for full range input, and any LOG input needs the manufacturer LUT to be loaded and applied, this is undocumented. 5. Atomos should add toggles so the "Legalize" option works apart for monitoring, output and for recording.

Ugh I have a 5DMARKIV and it sucks that the hdmi frame rate does not communicate with the atomos and it also suck that the hdmi only outputs 1080P. That aside it’s an amazing piece of equipment!

Hi Atomos thank you for such great and informative video. I just bought Eos R + Atomos ninja V and i have some questions. I know i can output 10bit 25p 4k. But when i try to do 1080p 25p out it wouldn’t let me it only outputs 1080 50p. So therefore the EOS R cannot output 1080 at 25fps to the Atomos is that correct? Thank you so much in advance. I have been trying to make it output 25p for hours and still couldn’t do it 🙏🏻

Thank you for the great video. I have a shogun inferno, when I connect my camera which the mic is attached to, to inferno via SDI, the recorded media does not have audio, I thought SDI carries audio signal. Also, I can see the audio levels on the inferno, but it is just not recorded. Do you have any suggestions?

I'm guessing you just hitting record on the EOS R. If so the EOS R then sends a stop command after 30 minutes to the Ninja V. Bypass the camera and just hit record on the Ninja V for longer recordings. Be sure to change power saving settings on EOS R or it will turn off after a few minutes !

I recently purchased a Ninja V and was shooting a Wedding last weekend and was surprised to find out that when I set my EOS R to FHD 23.97 ALL-I, the frame rate did not communicate correctly on the Ninja V. It would only record HDp59.94. I tried everything I could to change the frame rate to match the EOS R on the Ninja V. Even the Pull Down Function arrow on the Ninja V was grayed out when 1080p was selected on the camera. This is really disappointing if you want to record in 1080p in 29.97 or 23.98 on the Ninja V. I had a second rental Ninja V with me as a back up on this job and it behaved exactly the same. Both worked perfectly in 4K when I changed the frame rate on the camera the Ninja V changed and matched also. I have called and left a VM message at Atomos Support and Sent a Support Ticket but so far no one has responded. It doesn't make sense. To Rule out a camera issue I checked with the rental company and they replicated the 1080p frame rate issue with the same set up I was using (EOS R & Ninja V) and were unable to record 1080p at 29.97 or 23.98 on the Ninja V. Checked and made sure all Firmware on all camera and recorders were up to date as well. Is this by design or am I doing something wrong?

I haven't tried it yet (looking to buy the Ninja myself) but this video suggests enabling 24fp in the camera's menu: around 2.12 kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5qyi4ahibSWY7s If it doesn't work in NTSC try PAL. Lemme know how you get on - 24fps in HD is a must if I'm going to invest in it! Fingers crossed!

@@PTUsher The video suggests that you can choose any of the "Movie rec quality" menu page options/settings on the EOS R and the Ninja V will match frame rate and record them. I have found this to not be true for any of the 1080p 29.97p or 23.98p options as the Ninja records them at HDp59.94p and does not match the camera. Atomos support suggested I enable 24P recording in the cameras menu to record true 24p which works but when enabled the camera only shoots in 24p all the other Movie rec quality options disappear from the "Movie rec quality" menu page, so I cannot switch on the fly while shooting to 30p or 60p (like I can in 4K) without going through the laborious camera menu to disable 24p recording to access the other Movie rec quality options. If you do weddings in 1080p and want to change quickly from 24 to 60p for a slow motion shot on the fly you will probably miss the shot. I hope they fix this in a future firmware update so I do not regret my purchase. It is an awesome monitor and works flawlessly in 4K but I still do a lot of work in 1080p and may have to go back to my Ninja Blade when shooting in 1080p or invest in more hard drives and shoot everything in 4k and covert to 1080p.

Looking to see the best options for backing up to portable hard drives? I currently film on a GH5 and now have the Ninja V5 as the monitor recording to an SSD card. Traveling more often now and interested if there is a way to record on the Ninja 5 and then at the end of the day back up the footage a portable hard drive, without having a laptop on-hand?? A way that keeps the same quality of video from the day of filming? I've seen the Gnarbox 2, although the price is definitely up there for a 1TB hard drive. Guessing you can always record to to ssd on the Ninja and an sd card in the camera to serve as a backup, although what are you thoughts on these ? Any ideas? Would greatly appreciate your insight !!

I have the same problem with other users. Won't let you do 23.976 in 1080p. You have to select "24fps" which is really really odd. I'm actually returning mine because of having to change too many options to just get the things I want to work. It's a shame too.

One more question. Do I operate all from the camera? Recording especially? When I try to press record on the camera it seems that it does not record on SSD in Ninja V. When I press record on Ninja V than it records but it does not show a time record on the camera, or even that it records.

I believe you have to turn on HDMI trigger on the Ninja so when you hit record on the camera it records on the Ninja as well. In this setup the Ninja may stop recording when the camera hits the 29:59 limit. Just received my Ninja so haven't tried it yet.

Really need some help here. I tried my ninja v with sony ax100 and a7riii. But none of them shows any difference between footage from internal and external recording at Prores 422... They look absolute the same to me when I compared them. Is this what it supposed to be like? or did I do anything wrong with the setup

@@AtomosChannel Yes. I tried ProRes 422 and HQ. I don't see any difference in terms of color and image quality when I compare them on DaVinci.

just use an EFS lens when shooting 4k, the cheaper glass may reduce image quality but it effectively negates the cropping

Biggest issue so far is the fact that my luts are stored on the Ninja ssd so if you format the drive before you start shooting you loose any luts you might have wanted to load later. Going to see if I can create a partition just for luts but not sure that will work.

If you format it in the drive itself you won't have this issue

@@HastaLaVictoria26 yes. The luts you load onto the device will stay but we had to get a second SSD to carry around with any additional luts we might want to use because if you need to clear the footage and you format them any luts on that drive are gone too.

Today I recorded multiple people talking about subjects like sexual harassment and (fe)male stereotypes. I noticed that my camera screen had it's limits and that's how I ended up over here. Is this a product that can aid me in recording grave messages like that? So I'm here to learn about this tool, for technical know how. Not to look at a girl that is not wearing a bra [1:46]... Sure, put an attractive person in your video, but this sexualization is really unnecessary. Your tool looks cool though, I guess I just have to continue watching now 😐 Edit: 4:54 WTF?!
