Hi, Ben Kim! They are approved for CAT2 manual landing. They have good WX (I don't remember the model, because I used to fly it long time ago). The difference between 500 and 600 only in Cockpit and some minor systems...

Great video! I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. Do you always have trust in the ATR (feel safe flying it) given its icing problem history. Also, i was wondering how it handles? Best regards
@PilotBlogDenys4 жыл бұрын
Hi Swing Left Golf. You asked a good question. There were couple of accidents because of poorly designed de-icing system of ATRs however after the "Chicago" accident the de-icing boots were redesigned and the upper surface of de-icing boots were increased to fight with ice build up on upper wing surface. Also ATR updated the flight crew operating manual, saying how to avoid the problem. The last air crash concerning ATR + Icing was ATR72-200 crash of UTair Airlines in Tumen airport. However it wasn't ATR's fault but the pilot's. They hadn't done the ground de-icing and airplane took off with snow and ice on it's wings. Pilot also retracted the flaps much earlier than needed in icing conditions, killing the lift and causing the aircraft to stall. I would tell you that it is reliable airplane and this crash could happen to every aircraft type. The ground de-icing is critical procedure to be done to every aircraft. I was flying ATRs in Siberia and with temperatures down to -53C. We encountered severe icing many times but had never had any issues in controlling the airplane. Also Sweden SAS flying ATRs far to the north. Of course the ATR is not perfect, but I would rather increase the engines power than update the anti-ice system. The ATRs need autobrake, speed brakes, and more powerful engines. Luckily there is going to be new ATR42/72-600S with all those new features. Even though I fly B737 I still miss the ATR. It is nice airplane, don't worry. Safe flights!
@ASILASIL14 жыл бұрын
Pilot Blog thank you very much for your in depth answer! After landing in a mx crosswind, is it easy to control the aircrafts lateral sway with the ailerons or is it very difficult?
@PilotBlogDenys4 жыл бұрын
@@ASILASIL1 I think it is much harder compare to Boeing737. The landing gear is under the belly, with narrow track line. For example on Dash Q400 Bombardier the landing gear main struts under the wings, however Dash has more issues with lading gear compare to ATRs, but more easy to control. Also the ATR's nose gear has no control connection with rudder pedals. So with the strong x-winds you need to use the manual steering on Captain's left side. But it is not critical...

An excellent review!! Thank you. Question: on the PWR MGT knob, TO is used during take-off, CLB is used during the climb, CRZ is used at cruise altitude. What is the 4th option (not sure if its MCT or something else) and when is it used? Much appreciated.

Single engine operation Max Continuous Torque
@diegobeatrice52574 жыл бұрын
Hi congrats for your channel, i am a training captain myself on the CL605 and on the 737-800 although i have always been fascinated by the atr which i never had the chance to fly. I have two questions for you: what is the purpose of the IDLE GATE on the pedestal and do you have any indication which can be compared to the N2 on the 737 showing the rotational velocity of the compressor - i am not sure if the engine on the ATR is a multi spool - cos i only saw the Np gauge in the presentation. Can you also explain the engine start procedure and the sequence of events that take place as you manipulate the engine controls and switches during the start? Many thanks and keep up the good job!! Spaciba!
@PilotBlogDenys4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Idle gate prevents power levers to go to ground idle. If you do that in flight the propellers will go to the lowest pitch and that will create windmill propeller spinning with possible loss of the power control and loss or the speed due to eccessive drag. Idle gate may be pulled manually after touch down but usually it is activated automatically after air-ground sensor signals landing (touch down). After touch down you need that huge propeller drag to stop the airplane. Without Idele gate activation you can't set reverse power. It is the duty of pilot monitoring to check the Idle gate after touch down. If it would not come out just pull it manually. Ok, now for the second one: The main instrument to check the power is torque intication in 100% Turboprops are different. There is no thrust, but power. Torque is the parameter to check it. NP is used to check the propeller RPM, but it is not the main parameter to check the power on turboprops. For example on Antonov-24 the propeller RPM is the same on Indle and at take-off setting, but the propeller pitch changes so the fuel flow. The torque is different. ATRs have nore complicated electronic engine control system so the propeller RPM also changes as well as fuel flow and propelller pitch. The torque meter is very simple and easy to understand. You may take it as N1... I hope I answered your questions. Thanks for your comment!
@diegobeatrice52574 жыл бұрын
Pilot Blog hi thanks for your time and willingness. So if I understand it correctly you have no compressor indication at all, even during start up? So how do you know when you have enough airflow to support the combustion at a stoichiometric ratio during the start up to introduce the fuel without risking a hot start? And what do u exactly control with the power levers and with the condition levers? Many thanks
@PilotBlogDenys4 жыл бұрын
@@diegobeatrice5257 You have Nh (high pressure spool RPM). Powel levers for power. Condition levers for fuel open, feather, and propeller pitch control. On new ATRs you set condition levers in auto before taxi and before shut down. Automatic system controls the propeller pitch based on power levers position.
@diegobeatrice52574 жыл бұрын
Pilot Blog many thanks for the reply. I could not see the Nh gauge in your cockpit presentation of the atr 72-600. Is the Nh displayed at all times or only during start up or certain phases of flight? And at which Nh do u introduce fuel during start up?

Hey! Im wondering, isnt there an autopilot for speed? Is there a switch for speed and climb position like on airbus? ✌️
@ATR600PilotАй бұрын
ATR can make little adjustments automatically on torque but it doesn't have an autothrottle so far. It is not needed really because you set power levers on "notch" position for takeoff and they keep there until descent when you need to retard them a bit in order not to exceed 250kt IAS. However power is definetely not the same during takeoff than during cruise, and this is done by propeller rpm with the power management selector, which has 4 positions: TO, MCT, CLB and CRZ. TO gives 100% NP when power levers are on notch, and it is used for takeoff until acceleration altitude (minimum 400ft Above Aerodrome Level) MCT (maximum continous thrust) gives also 100% NP and it is used on emergencies like single engine operations Climb and Cruise both give 82% NP, the difference is that Cruise gives about 2 or 3 % less torque. Hope it helped, if you have any doubt please let me know!
