My issue with a "universally recognized weekend" is that it's really not. It's kinda only a recognized weekend for jobs that are high up enough that they can close up two days of the week and it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Especially in low-paying/service jobs, flexible schedules destroy the idea of consistent weekends being universally recognized. 4 days on, 3 days off is definitely optimal in my experience though.
@ghanaria79963 жыл бұрын
Yeah i work sat-tues, 4 days, and have wed-fri off. So my weekends start on the end of tuesday (i work morning shifts like 6am-2or 4ish) and it sucks to have my schedule be so different from friends. Work life is comfortable with 4 days on 3 days off.
@a2rhombus23 жыл бұрын
When I worked at target my schedule would be different every week and I wouldn't even know what it was until 2 weeks before. Making plans was impossible unless I requested a day off over a month in advance and that doesn't exactly make spur of the moment Saturday bar hopping viable. It sucks.

5 days (actually six in the beginning) 8 hours work, 8 hours play, 8 hours sleep is a relic from when we all worked in factories. Numerous studies have shown that productivity goes down hard after 6 hours. We have upped our production but the hours have stayed the same and the only once benefiting is the once that owns the production. This will never change because then a select few will lose money and they can't have that.

Regarding doctors. I hate taking unnecessary medication so I rarely use Tylenol or ibuprofen for aches and pains. I would rather just be in pain. So last year I was having shortness of breath and chest pains… it was way worse than anything I had ever experienced. My wife thought I was feigning pain because she never sees me show pain. I ended up driving myself to the ER at 11pm and the younger ER doc on shift thought I was just seeking pain killers. I specifically told him I don’t want to stop the pain, I want to find what is wrong. He opted to just monitor me for the rest of his shift. Very few tests. At 5:30am the replacement doc comes in, some guy in his late 60s. He walks in to my room seeing me doubled over crouching on the floor with my head on my bed and said “you look how I felt when I had to get my gall bladder removed.” I said test me doc and an hour later he was telling me I needed surgery immediately. He asked me if I wanted something for the pain and I told him I just wanted to sleep. Being up all night from pain wasn’t fun. Never had morphine before and hope I don’t again but damn it was nice in that few minutes before I fell asleep.

Any programmer who is trying to create an AI to write code for a company is literally getting rid of their job
@ghostbravo71273 жыл бұрын
Here is the thing, you get paid really well, you get a ton of experience in the machine learning/neural net space and if you are working at a reputable company (which you often are) then you are meeting some very smart engineers, you take the money you saved and make some friends in the company that are good candidates to work with and invite them to work with you on a new venture. Often times you might not even leave your company but will simply work with others on side projects and only leave when you are out of that early prototype stage. Not to mention, the AI will be replacing what we call code monkeys, low level programmers who don't learn design much and simply do grunt work, so not your ML engineers. This same kind of thinking was looked down upon by some in the past saying that the machine would replace programmers but look at it now, you have great IDE's that auto-correct minor mistakes in your code and help you work a lot faster, easier and with a lot less frustration.

Yeah... 2 days off a week feels like 1 day off a week. I have weekends off. One of your days off usually isn't a day off because you have stuff to do you couldn't do while working. Work around the house, errands, etc. Having weekends off barely feels like I have any time off. Feels like my weekend is on fast forward and I'm just right back at work. It's incredibly draining. Eventually I'm going to find a 4 day work week job. Adding two more hours for 4 shifts to get another day off? Sign me up. Heck, I'd work x4 16hr shifts for an extra day off. Would expect OT, but still.

I've found in cases where I had a 3-day weekend (Fri off, in this example), I've worked harder on the following Monday, and harder on the Thursday prior excited for a 3-day weekend (plus not having my lazy Friday). I think a 4-day work week just makes more sense. And not a 10x4, though even that'd be better, but an 8x4 where we literally just work one less day. I know a LOT of people who would work SO much harder, and would prob make up the difference if not exceed it. Of course this doesn't work in all industries like retail where you need people on the floor regardless, but in many I could see the concept thriving. The hard part is understanding how pay would translate if hourly, as reducing hours shouldn't lead to reduced salary which defeats the whole purpose. The purpose is more productive work hours since I have time to not only breathe, but have fun and relax as needed. Or more companies give more reasonable PTO... because 1 day a month is insulting, but normal in U.S. culture. Edit: Okay your idea of mon/tues/thu/fri is also a decent idea. I actually like that.

Replacing workers with robotics has more costs than this video makes it seem. The main issue... is the technology fails. These robotics fail often and the costs can be crazy. It's a high initial cost to replace a worker with robotics... if it breaks the cost keeps going up... if you have to replace it that's another huge expense. Why most companies are doing it in waves rather than all at once. Let's them fix all the bugs before investing too much in it.

The problem with replacing computer prograners with AI is that the main job of a computer programmer is to interpret weird customer requirements and translating them to the code. AI cannot be as good in understanding that, as it requires human factor. If you really want to get the code that does exactly what you want, you need to specify exactly to AI what you want. And in general, actual programming is just writing code that does exactly what we want. A d even then it doesn't always does what we want, it does what we say it to do😂

Yeah the idea is to drive white collar workers into even more low-wage, low-skilled jobs. If you compound this with maintaining a low minimum wage, the corporation's profit rises exponentially, their low cost products are the only option for the now minimum wage workers, and they control an entire industry. This is the problem. If we replaced low wage jobs with robots, and gave those people higher wage positions, rather than forcing them to compete in an increasingly shrinking job market, that would be great. But that's impossible to do if there is a profit incentive in automation, and not incentive to give workers more fulfilling and well-compensated work.
