Looks like a good timing of flight due to leaving as it night in one country and arrive in a morning time in Australia. I would have tried to sleep about three or four hours into the flight so you sleeping when it would be night time in Australia and wake up to it arriving in the morning time. I did flight back via LAX airport abut 18 years ago so too long ago to remember how long it took. I thought it was closer to 17 hours. But 14 hours seems a quick flight between USA and Australia. Having a middle seat empty would really help make the flight comfortable. Very lucky.

That's what I usually do is to sleep 6 hours on the flight but I time it so that it's evening in Sydney time and then when I wake up it's only a few hours before landing. This has been my routine for a long time. And indeed having an empty middle seat has helped. I've actually had an entire row to myself for a good number of flights recently.

My family is travelling Syd - LAX and back! Can you please help us decide between these 4 airlines?: - American Airlines - United Airlines - Qantas - Virgin Australia TYSM ❤
@BayAreaTraveler
@BayAreaTraveler 5 күн бұрын
Well actually Virgin Australia no longer flies overseas to US. The 4th airline that flies between SYD and LAX is Delta, so you have AA, UA, QF and DL as the 4 airlines flying between SYD-LAX. It's hard to say which airline you should choose. To start, I'm not sure what your budget is but if you are price sensitive then choose the most economical. However, I would not fly American, that's just my personal opinion. The best US airline would be Delta which I just flew on in December and customer service wise they are the best. The thing I like about Qantas is the seats are more comfortable and the seat recline is more than UA and DL. Food wise DL, QF and UA are all about the same more or less. I've flown UA so many times that I'm so used to UA. One thing to note about UA is that their seats may not be all comfortable. Customer service can be hit or miss on UA.

I'm biased, but I think United Club at LAX is the best among the United Clubs I've visited in the US. Unfortunately, I didn't requalify for star alliance gold with Asiana. But I do get two passes with my explorer card. I hope you can review United's flight between SFO and MNL one day. As always, lovely report.

Thanks for watching Jeff! And totally agree with you. The UA Club Lounge at LAX is quite impressive and at least certainly better than all the UA Clubs at SFO. Maybe one day I can travel to MNL but not sure when that will be. Most of my trips these days are either to HKG or to Sydney to take care of family situations.

You should have experienced the United Polaris lounge, more upscale than United Club. But usually reserved for those flying First/Business class

@BayAreaTraveler
@BayAreaTraveler 7 күн бұрын
Are you referring to United lounges? I can only speak of United. UA has 2 types of lounges, Club and Polaris. Polaris is only reserved for international business class flyers. The Club lounge is really for anyone through membership or passes from using UA Chase credit card or purchase a one time pass at the door.

Were you concerned at all flying on the 787-9 given its history? Also how do you stay calm on the plane, especially when flying over the ocean?
@BayAreaTraveler
@BayAreaTraveler 8 күн бұрын
I've flown on the 787-9 many times already and not worried at all. The lithium battery fires was only a concern at entry into service but Boeing has fixed that long time ago and there hasn't been any issues since. I actually like flying so I have no anxiety flying over long distances over water.

Is there no direct SFO-SYD service? Why did you leave from LAX?
@BayAreaTraveler
@BayAreaTraveler 10 күн бұрын
There is direct SFO-SYD service on UA and Qantas but what happened was that I had booked an award ticket on Qantas from LAX-SYD using points but Qantas cancelled the night before my flight. Since I still had a separate SFO to LAX flight on Alaska, I elected to continue to try to still flight out of LAX to SYD and hence I went with UA.

Is that your longest flight in 2024, how many hours you sleep on the plane, do you remember how much you pay to fly United to Sydney, does it include seat selection for free or a fee, is the luggage policy strict, did you apply ETA to visit Sydney, if so, how's the progress, how's passport control for entering and visiting Sydney, is it long, how long is the wait, did you take uber taxi to the hotel, do you remember what's the name of the hotel you stay in Sydney and did you enjoy your trip?

@BayAreaTraveler Ohh ok as I said I grew up in Kirribilli - and I mentioned Newcastle - but just before Newcastle there is a little place called Caves Beach it's hidden away - later in my parents life they purchased a house there by the beach - it's a very quiet place - I suggest you Google it and KZbin it - the beach is stunning and it's a small seaside community

If you book your flight early enough you have the option to choose window or aisle. For this flight, I had to book it on the day of and still got a window and an empty middle seat.

@ You’re lucky. On flights that are more than 7 or 8 hours I just bite the bullet and pay for business class. The airlines have made coach (and even coach+) so uncomfortable that it’s worth the significant increased cost to me.
@BayAreaTraveler
@BayAreaTraveler 9 күн бұрын
@@jackmeyhoffer5107 I understand and agree, the airlines especially the US ones make economy very uncomfortable to unbearable. I have to make this journey 4 times a year and so I choose days in which it is not so busy like departing on a Thurs when flights aren't so full so that I have some wiggle room to be comfortable.
