Tooling a lathe is an endless task, but that's the way to do it, little by little. Good video Jeff

Just got mine a few days ago. But it came with 3 chucks and a cool gadget: a piece of wood that I'll put on the bed whenever I change a chuck. Safety first.

Good job on the chuck. My 3 jaw has about a thousandth more run out than that one so you are lucky. Just threaded my first barrel this week, video to come later.

Hi I have a old clone of this lathe. It’s a hercus made in Australia. What length adjustable v link belt would I need. As I don’t have a old belt for a sample?

Hi! I just picked up an old 9” south bend model B and it came with a very small chuck. Where did you get this chuck/ how do I know what will fit the machine/ won’t?

Great video. When I put a new 6" 3 jaw on my 10" Atlas, I cut the back plate .001" oversize, put it in the freezer for 24 hrs, the put it on my 3 jaw. Got my run out down to .0025". I was happy as my last three jaw had .017" TIR.

AGAIN you beat me. I filmed this very same video this last weekend, but for my 4-jaw chuck. The back plate I bought at Grizzly and WAS cast iron and the video turned out crappy so was sent to the floor/trash can. might just do a short video of drilling the holes and mounting it. kuddos to you again Jeff. keep up the good work.

I got my Grizzly 0765 running 1/2 of thousand! Here's how. It came with 3" chuck and it was crap! It also wouldn't let me chuck round stock that's up to spindle size so I always wanted at least 4" but I couldn't find the one with proper register to the backplate that I ordered from Little Machine shop along with their independent 4" chuck (which is crap too) They also charge you over $100. I looked high and low on ebay but without luck. Finally I noticed about a year ago Banggood started carrying lot's of cheap lathe tools. I decided to check them out few weeks ago again while looking for some tools and came across 4" chuck that has proper 72 mm register! Bingo! How I wish I found this sooner! And it was only 65 bucks with shipping!!! When it arrived it was way better quality and nice packaging compare to original and independent 4" I got from Little machine shop. It has tight scroll lock. I than watched a video about how one guy had to true up his little machine shop backplate and that got me thinking what if my plate is crooked too? Well my plate was actually straight but I did notice my spindle had actually 1.5 thou run-out so I decided to face the spindle but had to rely on compound for cutter to reach it. Now I don't know what kind of steel they use for spindle but it makes the cutter dig in badly even with slightest cuts, I ended up with rings which I used sandpaper with block of good and carriage to push with and polished a little. I think the spindle needs grinding - not turning but end result I chucked 1/2 precession round stock and I am getting half a thousand run-out with new chuck and trued up spindle face. Now let me add I am doing all of this after I got my South Bend 10 which makes me sad that I had to put up with crappy chuck for 3 or so years.

Try it with some different sized stock to see if the error is consistently in the same place. If it is then you can turn down your boss a bit and tap it into true.

That's a good idea, I'll have to chase it down one of these days and see how dead nuts I can make it!

Nice job a decent very fine grade cast iron may cut abit like steel to that looked steely to me !

+Machining Basics yeah I have no idea but it cut just fine either way, thanks!

Thought it´s more like powder with cast iron. But who knows, there are quite some types of cas iron. Anyway, you´ve probably have seen it, but some grind the jaws under load to improve accuracy.

what happen to the smaller lathe ?
@PracticalRenaissance7 жыл бұрын
It's still in my shop and set up for use, it gets higher RPMs and can cut metric threads so I still have a use for it for now!

You can not measure the runout with this (unround) piece of drillrod. I guess they meant that you can expect a deviation if you close the chuck, measure, open, close again, measure, ... A three jaw chuck does not always close the same way twice.
