I have to say that you are wrong about the video games not getting TDs right. There is one exception, and that is The Phantom Menace video game. Thermal detonators in TPM were something to run the hell away from at least on the PC version.

I'd argue it's more like the "acceptable" canon due to its high highs and really low lows. This is compared to the Disney canon, which has a status quo so retarded every single story within it takes a huge blow to the balls.
@jesser10703 жыл бұрын
@@stripey566 Depends on the story. New Disney Cannon has consistently good books, comics and shows when compared with Legends, but they're lacking in terms of games. I feel like after RotJ, Star Wars has always been at it's best with things surrounding the films as opposed to the films themselves. Legends and the new Cannon succeed with different degrees of success with different media.

I love the idea of someone getting into a refrigerator to survive a thermal detonator… Imagine Leia’s finger slips and she vaporized everyone in Jabba’s Palace, then Luke shows up to the crater and just finds Han in a block of thawed out carbonite… now Lando can’t fly the Falcon so it’s either gonna sit unused during the attack on the second Death Star or it’s gonna be destroyed. C-3P0 isn’t around to negotiate with the Ewoks. R2 I dunno fails open a door or something… and Luke’s out a lightsaber so he’s gotta use Yoda’s little short lightsaber in his epic final duel with Vader 😂 It would honestly be super interesting to see how that duel would play out differently if Leia’s already dead and the threat of turning her to the dark side is totally off the table… maybe it’s still got a “happy” good guys win ending if Leia’s Force ghost guides a blind Han Solo to simply crash the Falcon into the Death Star reactor core and just kill everyone aboard (including himself) like Luke always planned and Harrison Ford always wanted.
@noahfessenden64783 жыл бұрын
It is worth mentioning that the thermal detanator in Knights of the Old Republic yielded a larger blast than all other grenades in the game. At the very least larger than a standard class F.
@twistedyogert8 ай бұрын
Which is odd because KOTOR takes place 3000 years before Episode 4. Shouldn't the older ones be less functional?
@SmokeyBCN3 жыл бұрын
One game I think kind of gets thermal detonators a bit better than most is the quirky episode 1 ps1 game. They are rarer weapons on that game, can more or less kill every enemy on screen, and are noticeably more powerful than another ingame weapon, "flash grenades" (essentially regular frag grenades).

@Saintmillion I discovered your channel and it is great ! Honestly, a thermonuclear bomb in the pocket is kind of OP. And implying there is a micro tech to contain the blast implies there exists personal shield generators of similar efficiency and so on: it is then hard to justify why such tech is not used everywhere (in fact nuclear weaponry is always hard to justify/use in the starwars universe and I prefer to omit it). For this reason, in tabletop rpg I only classify and describe the thermal detonator as a grenade with a huge power and intense localized heat (techno blabla is not explained to not trigger the player into taking advantage of it), and baradium as an unstable explosive matter X times more "powerful" than classic explosive (TNT for example).

I like the idea of the class-F and would like to expand my headcanon by slightly modifying some of the informations about the different models so that it can fit both legends and canon in a way that I consider to be quite acceptable and faithful to both materials. So here is what I added to my own headcanon : Due to the sheer power of Merr-Sonn original class-A detonators as well as their unstability, those got officially banned by the Republic with strict orders on Merr-Sonn to stop manufacturing them and selling them. Class-C, although far more obscure and less famous, were also banned at the same time. By that time, the reputation of the class-A had already spread, and it was considered by many in the galaxy to be one of the best explosive device, thanks to its compactness, its sheer power but also its ingenious design that was not only very ergonomic but also allowed for useful features such as the possibility to change the fuse duration as well as the dead man's switch setting. Following its ban - Merr-Sonn therefore wanted to capitalize on the reputation of the Class-A design, by issuing a new line of detonators under the same name and design, to the only difference that this time, the Class-F didn't involve a beridium core and instead was just a classic explosive device creating a big messy firy explosion - cheaper to produce, it was still very powerful and quickly became the most used and known version in the galaxy. With the beginning of the Clone Wars - the Republic ordered to Merr-Sonn insane amounts of those Class-F detonators so that they could equip their Clone Army with it - that is why most of the denators we see being used in movies or tv shows are Class-F ones. Yet, the republic also approached Merr-Sonn with a slightly darker idea in mind : revive the Class-A design under a new and slightly different design : the V-1 model. This model was supposed to be kept secret and exclusive to the Grand Army of the Republic, since the use of the Class-A detonator or any similar explosive device was still banned and considered to be war crimes. The V-1 models were used mainly by special forces or sometimes regular troops on very specific cases, often to conduce illegal operations during the war and their design was similar to the ones of the class-A, yet purposefuly made different so that they could not be identified directly as being Merr-Sonn technology (a precaution taken by the Republic that ended up being useless as Merr-Son started secretly selling those to the CIS too to maximize its profit).

This was basically a grenade but some of the people writing the EU needed it to be Super Extra Special so they made up some BS about it atomizing things in a 20 meter radius even though a grenade-like blast would still be plenty threatening in Jabba's crowded palace in RoTJ. I prefer the lower-yield game versions.

Still hate the old expanded universe, and I will continue to piss on the corpse of Legends. But I will admit the new canon is bad and worse in an entirely different way. I suppose the most tragic thing about Star Wars canon is that I will never have enough piss.
