In June 1978 it was learnt that SWAPO was preparing to attack the military bases at Katima Mulilo, Wenela and M''pacha. To meet this attack two combat teams viz Alpha and Bravo were formed.
The attack started on 23 August with a stand-off bombardment using 122 mm rockets on Katima Mulilo. One of these penetrated the roof of a barrack killing ten soldiers.
After an artillery and mortar battle the two combat units crossed the border. Combat team Bravo's target was a SWAPO base camp approximately 30 km from the Zambian border but they found it deserted and returned to M''pacha without having accomplished this objective. Combat Unit Alpha managed to catch up with the rear guard of a number of fleeing terrorists but were enticed into an ambush. In the fighting which ensued five terrorists were killed while about sixty fled. In a later skirmish at a terrorist base seven more terrorists were killed.
On 25 August combat teams Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Papa (consisting of a paratroop support company, a company of 31 Battalion and 140 mm gun troop) again cross the border to Zambia en route to Imusho, Cinzenbela and elsewhere but found them abandoned. The only worthwhile incident took place at' Cinzenbela when a local garrison fired at a South African helicopter, with an anti-aircraft gun. This was silenced by Combat Unit Bravo's artillery. The combat units crossed the border and returned on 27 August.

This profile pic was taken in the wooden look-out tower, Tango something, on the river, in the Katima Magistrate's back garden. I was an LMG #1 with Durban Regiment, ex 5SAI, on a three month camp, at the time. Don't remember the year, guessing 1976. I have a few b&w photos which are now of historical value, I guess. 😐

The reason why it was being mentioned as Caprivi more often instead of SWA its because administratively it fell under Pretoria though it was still part of Namibia. It has been part of Namibia since 1890 through the Helgoland -Zanzibar Treaty of 1890.

I was 4 & half years old, living in Katima Mulilo, mom says the Swapo rockets launched from Sheshego across the Zambezi damaged our roof & bullets removed by army from our front door. I remember the bunker which was a mosquito-trap ended up on a drip with malaria.

It is what is known as propaganda, Caprivi is, was a part of the rest of South West Africa, the colony. The man is the late Siseho Simasiku, Linda "I believe's father".

Yes, sort of, it has a long and interesting history. First ruled by the Lozi Kings, the British and the Germans. A that time it was administered by South Africa and from 1981 to 1990 ruled by the Administration for the Caprivians as part of South West Africa. The Chief Ministers were Chief Mamili and Moraliswane. In 1992 the Caprivi became one of the political regions in Namibia with its own Regional Governor and councilors.

Absolute nonsense, I've read many accounts from Rhodesian soldiers who trained with Portuguese forces, and the recurring theme is that the Portuguese forces were incompetent and lacked any real ambition to hunt down and destroy the enemy, complete opposite of the Rhodesia strategy.

South Africa in that time has no right to be in Caprivi, Namibia or any other place, and thats the true
@DeadeyeDamari
@DeadeyeDamari 5 жыл бұрын
South Africa had as more right to be in Namibia than the Cubans in Angola. if you read your history, you will know that at the end of World War One, South Africa was given German South West Africa to govern after it was captured by the South Africans during that conflict. In Angola, Cuba was asked by the MPLA to help secure their position in Angola. To note is that NO ELECTIONS had taken place in Angola. There were 3 warring parties MPLA, FNLA and UNITA in that civil war and the United Nations just announced a de facto government with no elections. FNLA was backed by the USA, MPLA was by Cuba and UNITA turned to South Africa for help..... so if you want to say RSA had no place in namibia or Angolan Civil War, then go back to school and butter up your history.
