I think we should remember that Grisha is no saint. There's zero reason to believe his account of history, especially since he basically admits to Grice that he made it up. He was unable to read the texts. His spiel about Ymir being purely benevolent is nothing more than what he wants to believe. He denies atrocities committed by Eldia based on nothing. Worse than that, at one point he talks about how they're gonna "completely annihilate Marley", and how his ancestors were right. Marley is full of innocents just like Fay, so Grisha is basically just advocating genocide, and justifying genocides of the past (when he isn't busy denying them, that is).

Both sides have innocents in every war since the beginning of time. Even Nazis had many people who were good or whatever. But Marley knowingly has for decades treated Eldians living in their continent as slaves and invaded Paradise to kill and steal their land for fossil fuel. So we know who to support here bruh. Also Grisha had understood many of his past mistakes by the time he wrote those diaries like he acknowledged his wrongful upbringing of Zeke. He was more older, understood the truth of the world and wanted to live in peace in Paradise but ate the Founding Titan and gave it to Eren only after Marley (Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie & Zeke) invaded. Both sides have innocents but Marley started the first attack so fuk Marley and it's citizens and I know there are many innocents there but so is there in Paradise and they have suffered enough. In the Mythological epic Mahabharata it's said that to take revenge always is wrong but to always forgive is also wrong.

i'll put all the lore and main points explained in this episode down as simple notes: -Ymir is the 1st titan and the mother of all eldians. -Ymir split her power after she died into the 9 titan shifters (the founding titan is one of them) -The eldians are the people that can turn into titans, and evryone inside the walls is an eldian. -the walls are on paraidse islan, they were built by king fritz. -Marley is a huge empire that was trying to contest the eldian empire since ymir's time. -Marley managed to bring 7 out of 9 Titan shifter powers under their control and thats how they managed to defeat the eldian empire. A Pure Titan needs to eat a Titan SHIFTER, not just another Titan in order to revert back to human form. That’s why anytime a shifter is present, they target them over humans. Also...Jesus Christ Mickey... “So is the name of the Founding Titan Marley?” 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ come on man... Edit: Some people brought to my attention that Hannah and her BF were spoiling things, to which I say yes I do remember they hinted at certain facts that weren’t presented in the anime yet. Grisha *himself* was forced into doing it (getting himself eaten by Eren without any prior debriefing, as it were) because Frieda didn't (in fact, couldn't) use the Founding to defeat the Colossal and the Armored, he was desperate and running out of time. He begged Frieda to use the Founding Titan's power to save the people of Shiganshina (I don't remember if Eren has remembered this yet in the series, in the manga it happens with Historia touching him, this is the spoiler, although you can extrapolate this from earlier episodes) but she was under the curse of the First King in the Wall and couldn't I don't know what Grisha's plan was originally going to be when he reached his 13 years (another spoiler, I'm not sure why I keep mentioning which are the spoilers whatev I've already done it), but what we see-- his anger at finding out about Carla's death, his anger at the Reiss family's inaction (he doesn't know about the pacifist curse), his anger at Marley for destroying the peace within the walls, etc-- *forced* his hand. If the Warriors never attacked, we don't know what he ultimately would have done. As soon as he found out about the attack on Shiganshina, he rushed to the Reiss home/church, so he must have already known that they had the Founding, but he never acted on it prior to that, why? Did he change his mind? Was he happy with his family within the walls? Was he waiting until the last moment he could to see if Marley was going to make a move? We don't know. He gave it to Eren because Eren is his son, that's just an an emotional choice. He knew Eren was curious. He probably knows about Eren and Armin's dream to see the ocean too. He knows for sure after Shiganshina that Eren has hatred enough to pursue Titans, and with that, perhaps find out the truth. He didn't know about the pacifist curse, he probably didn't even know that the Founding Titan does not work without the bearer being of royal blood. It was a fucked choice made in a fucked time. But he did not indoctrinate Eren into a fighter against Marley. The words he gave him (knowing Eren would forget most if not all of what he said) was: "If you want to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else...you must learn to control this ability." not "If you want to destroy the enemy." not "If you want to restore Eldia." It's if you want to save Armin, Mikasa and everyone else.

Isayama (the author of the manga) has stated that he intended the Sergeant Gross scene about how fun it is to watch people being eaten to make it look like Gross is talking to us, the audience. He’s sort of breaking the fourth wall and commenting on the fascination that we have towards violence. Furthermore, a lot of us were thrilled when Kruger pushed Gross off the wall to be eaten alive. Did you as a viewer enjoy seeing that ? Probably. Why ? Because you hate Gross and think he deserved it. And isn't that interesting. That's exactly what Gross thinks about Eldians. Eldians "deserve" what's happening to them. Fay deserved to be eaten by dogs. He hates them so he enjoys seeing them being eaten. Where do we draw the line ? Who decides who deserves what ? What does the word "deserve" even really mean ? Is it objective in any sense ? Isayama is showing us how the cycle of revenge and hatred and violence is perpetuated across generations and enabled by the dehumanization of others. But the bottom line is that once you hate someone and decide that they "deserve" a horrible a death, you start enjoying horrific things. Sergeant Gross isn't so different from us. He's able to enjoy the death of people he sees as literal monsters. We're able to enjoy *his* death because we see him as a moral monster. Is one so different from the other ? This isn't a defense of that asshole, by the way. It's more of an indictment of humanity in general, and our potential for sadism. All it takes is seeing the enemy as "others" and a dash of self-righteousness thrown in and there you have it : a perfect cocktail for creating sadists.

The biggest reveals: - Marley is on the mainland, Paradis is the Island where the 3 Walls are placed by the King Fritz (Reiss). - People on Paradis and in the internment camps in Marley are known as Eldians, capable of becoming a Titan. - There are Nine titan shifters: Eren's Titan & Founding Titan (Eren has 2 now) , Armored Titan (Reiner), Female Titan (Annie), Colossal Titan (Armin), Beast Titan (Zeke), Jaw Titan (Ymir) are known. There are two more (one is already seen). - Zeke is Grisha's son, half-brother of Eren and of Royal Blood thanks to Dina Fritz. - Dina Fritz is the Smiling Titan! - The Attack Titan was owned by Kruger, The Owl. To clarify: if a Pure Titan eats someone with one of the Nine Titan powers, those powers will be passed on to that Pure Titan, and that person becomes human again.

Paradise is rich in fossil fuels etc and the marley mainland which is growing in population and technology need more and more resources hence they make these warriors from 7 clans with 7 titan powers (zeke,reiner,annie,bertholdt,one more guy which ymir titan ate, the carrier titan and another one not revealed yet) to go take over the island. This is one time when I think The Normies busy schedule worked against them. There were some mistakes in the post episode chat (Not form Chris. He was on point.) that I'm sure they would have worked through if they spent a bit more time discussing, This was a massive episode with a ton of lore and info and most group reviews I've seen spent at least an hour going over it, making sure to check the anime wiki for things they might have misremembered from past episodes, which really helped them work the kinks out.

When Armin questioned Eren asking "who am I?" it was less about the question and more about Eren's use of "watashi" (I). Watashi is very polite and formal. Eren always uses "boku" (more casual way of saying "I") when referring to himself except when talking to higher ups. Grisha (and Dyna) used watashi throughout the memory. Basically memory Grisha was speaking through Eren for a second there.

They make so much sense once you've seen this episode and its hard not to feel empathy for them "We were just kids, we didn't know anything. They're just on Marley's side, not on the Restorationists' side. Grisha is a Restoriationist and is pro-Eldia. RBA are pro-Marley. They became warriors of Marley hoping to become honorary Marleyans so that they'd be able to live freely. Grisha put Zeke into the same child soldier program.

This is for everyone confused from this episode. Marley is the empire of the marylian people. Eldian empire was where Marley is. But after losing the great titan war where Marley had controlled 7 of the 9 titans, eldians retreated to the island of paradise. Where they made the three walls with the founding titan then wiped their memory. The creator of the walls said if Marley ever attacked they would use the millions of titans to destroy Marley. That’s why Marley never invaded them in the 100 years of peace. there are still eldian people in Marley and they’re the ones with the arm bands. Treated like Jews back in the day. Eldians are the ones that can turn into titans. Marlyians can’t be turned into titans. So that’s why they have the warrior program. Where they pick eldian children to become warriors where they give them the powers of the 9 titans which they only had 7 of. That’s includes the beast titan, armoured and female etc. so they’re fighting for Marley but their blood is eldian. Marley is a continent the size of Africa and paradise island is like Madagascar. This is all the lore that was told in this episode so I can’t say anything more.

The titan (no official title in the anime yet) given by Eren Krueger to Grisha, which was then passed on to Eren. 3. The Colossal Titan: held by Bertholdt, now in the possession of Armin. 4. The Armored Titan: in the possession of Reiner. 5. The Female Titan: in the possession of Annie. 6. The Beast Titan: in the possession of Zeke. 7. "Ymir's" titan (no official anime title): held by the other guy who came with Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt, before it was stolen by Ymir 8. I know it's been awhile since some of you watched parts of the show...and the people that are criticizing you are probably eager manga readers or people that reread/rewatch content. It's really easy to confuse the story with how Isayama writes especially if you just watch the anime on a yearly basis. So, I thought I would just clear things up. I'm a manga reader but I won't spoil anything. Here's a quick rundown The world has just been opened up. Eren and Co. are on Paradis. Marley is the enemy nation that we saw in Grisha's flashback. They are across the sea. All of Paradis, with the exception of the Ackermans are ELDIANS. They are on Paradis because the King at the time, which is the vessel of The Founding Titan, took his people and sailed to Paradis. He constructed the walls of titans and then mind wiped all Eldians. It explains why we had no idea of the backstory until now. However, some Edians remained in Marley after the war and these Eldians were worked into the interment zones. This is where Grisha learned the history. When Eldians are punished by Marley they SAIL them to Paradis then turn them into pure titans. Dumb titans (pure titans) are what happens when a titans spinal fluid gets in the blood of an Eldian. It explains the titans outside the walls of Paradis they are all punished Eldians from Marleys' internment zone. However, ONLY ELDIANS will react this way because of their blood. If you were to take the injection and give it to someone in Marley it wouldn't work because they don't have Eldian blood. Eldians are ancestors of Ymir Fritz who created the 9 titans. These are known as titan shifters. If you're a shifter you have one of those powers. Eren has two because of the Founding Titans power that Grisha stole from the Reiss family (a family of royal blood) and the titan that Grisha already had. If you remember he transformed into a titan to take the titan from Reiss. The Founding Titan is what Marley wants. EREN HAS IT. There's more detail but this is the basics. Yeah this story is pretty fucking confusing and it's kind of impossible to understand unless you revisit. People are being way to harsh and the insulting on each member has to stop.

Here's a summary if case you were confused. -The walls are located on an island, called Paradis, that is populated by Titans. -The rest of the world off that island is completely fine. -The Titans are a specific race of humans, called Eldians (or Subjects of Ymir), who if injected with Titan spinal fluid, will transform into Mindless Titans. -The Eldians’ common ancestor is a woman named Ymir Fritz, who was the first person to gain the Power of the Titans almost 2000 years ago. -After Ymir’s death, her power was split into 9 special Titans (Colossal, Armored, etc). -The majority of the people within the walls are Eldians, with the exception of a few “noble” bloodlines (like the Asian clan Mikasa is a part of). -The main continent of the world is controlled by the Empire of Marley. -Over the course of The Great Titan War, Marley gained possession of 7 of the 9 Titan powers. -When the king of the walls left the main continent 100 years ago to create the walls on the island of Paradis, there were some Eldians left behind. These Eldians are now heavily oppressed and forced to live in Internment Camps. -The people of Marley justify this by claiming that, in the past, the Eldians abused the Power of the Titans in order to control the world and commit atrocities against the other races of the world. -When Grisha was 18, he was recruited into an underground resistance group, called the Eldian Restorationists, who were lead by a spy within the Marleyan military that was referred to as “The Owl”. -The Owl sent the Restorationists ancient Eldian text that contradicted the history taught in Marley. It claimed that the Subjects of Ymir used the Power of the Titan to bring wealth and prosperity to the world. -There was a branch of the Royal Family that refused to follow the King when he left to create the walls. -Dina Fritz was a descendant of that family and joined the Restorationists. Grisha and Dina were married after a year, and they had a child named Zeke, who later becomes the Beast Titan (and is Eren’s half brother). -The Restorationists come up with a plan to steal the Founding Titan from the king within the walls so that they could use its power to overthrow the Marleyan Empire. Soon after that, Marley announced that they were beginning to recruit Eldians from the ages of 5 to 7 years old to join the military and train to become Warriors in order to enter the walls and steal the Founding Titan because they claim that they had received a proclamation from King Fritz, saying that at some point, he would start to rebuild the Eldian Empire and once again reign terror across the world. -The Owl tells the Restorationists that this was a lie, and the true reason for Marley starting this operation is due to the Power of the Titans becoming less effective in war as technology advances, and the island of Paradis harbors a large quantity of natural resources that could be used to fuel modern weapons. -Grisha decides to make Zeke into a double agent and have him become one of Marley’s Warriors. -Zeke ends up betraying his parents and the Restorationists, resulting in them being sent to Paradis to become Mindless Titans. -The Owl was the soldier that Grisha ran into as a child when he went outside of the Internment Camp to see the airship.

I’m so happy when someone said “it’s very like Greek and Norse mythology.” Yes, yes it is. Norse mythology is one of the biggest inspirations for the writer of the series, as well as game of thrones. And they are close with Titan theory but not quite. The segregation doesn’t effect the trundles titans. When someone becomes a mindless Titan, they have no control, regardless if they are from Marley or Paradis. But yes, due to King Fritz wiping the memory is all Eldians on Paradis, they didn’t know of Eldians living outside the walls. And also, Ymir, Bertolt, Reiner, and Annie, are all from Marley, about the same age. And you are correct, Titan’s have accelerated aging, and due to the curse of Ymir, they die after holding the power for 13 years. They power can be passed on to someone else if they are eaten by a mindless Titan, or if they don’t, the Titan power is transferred to a random Eldians baby born somewhere around the world.
