"Mappa" is the new studio, they took over from the old studio "Wit". Although Attack on Titan is wildly successful, no other animation studio wanted to take over the project for season 4. Think about that. You could not throw enough money at studios to take a successful franchise that has already been writeen. The Titans, and scope of some of the scenes in this season are massive in scope. For reference it took Wit 3 months to animate "Levi vs the Beast Titan." I think it took even longer to animate Levi escaping from Kenny at the beginning of season 3. Season 4 had a weekly release, and is so so so wild compared to some of the stuff we have had prior. Wit does a fantastic job. I think the animation also fits the mood of season 4.

I literally don’t understand how could they missed it entirely. It has been mentioned multiple times in this episode. Their defeat in Paradis cost them the Female and Colossal and indirectly started this war for Marley because Marley was seen as weakening. Zeke even explicitly said Remember this Reiner, it was our failure which caused this. Heck the warrior candidates were talking about who should inherit the Armored Titan when Reiner here is already the Armor Titan. Colt was mentioned to be the next in line for Beast Titan. So how could they be from the past? Yet they are still talking as if these was part of flashbacks and where is Bertolt?

Lots of reactors I've watched tend to not realize. Personally I caught on when they mentioned the female and colossal. Not everyone is great at processing info quickly while also trying to comprehend the current thing taking place. But it's alright, the show always makes sure to keep everyone on track as they continue to watch.

Galliard is the new JAW titan. To inherit the power he ate Ymir. The Eldia in Marley are kinda brainwashed and indoctrinated by the marleyan lies about the past. This works so good that the warrior candidate Gabi truly believes in what she was taught. At what time are we now ? Good question. My thoughts are: 9 to 10 years after the colossal titan ( Berthold ) broke the outside gate of Shiganshina ( S1Ep1 ). The scouts needed up to 5 years to retake Shiganshina and Wall Maria to get to the basement. In this episode someone, I think it was Zeke ( Beast titan ), said our failure on paradise caused this war ( 4 years ).

To sum up the animation switch: 1. Wit mostly hand-drew AoT, which is *way* more time consuming and is responsible for the signature look of Seasons 1-3. Wit used some CGI for specific shots, but IMHO honestly their CGI was pretty bad. If you saw scenes that looked ugly before, it was probably CGI. 2. AoT gave Wit 6 months to do S4P1. This would be impossible while hand-drawn, as the highest quality scenes of S3 took up to 3 months themselves. But the pandemic made it impossible to even do CGI. No studio but MAPPA would accept this time frame even using CGI. 3. MAPPA was the only studio who accepted this short time frame and rushed it out, but still failed and needed to ask for 2 more months to animate the show even using CGI. This is just to say, Wit never had a chance doing Season 4 at the pace the fans needed. 4. From an objective standpoint, 4x02 is probably the worst animated episode in the series. In my opinion that's due to the timeline given and them learning as they went. Trust me, the animation picks up in objective quality *very* quickly after that. Whether you like the animation after that is more subjective, but there are still much fewer mistakes or awkward looking movements/shots after 4x02.
