I guess at that point in the story I was fully invested in the "humanity vs the Titan" narrative that had been set up, so I wasn't even looking for others amidst the soldiers. The steam from wounds and regenerating is a general titan thing. You can literally blow their head off and it will grow back if you don't take out the nape of the neck, and it will be steaming the entire time. The body will also disperse as steam if you kill one, same for the blood. We saw Captain Levi get coated in the stuff and it steamed away leaving him clean a few shots later.
