Erwin was kinda that character that I liked from the start. I've never been really in love with these "Calm ones" who keeps their feeling inside most of the times, but Erwin was... He was probably best one for me. His dream that he was holding for, his gambles, all of that. He wasn't really opened to anyone but Levi since he became the Commander, and you can see how he was ready to do anything for just a little chance of winning. And in the end, when he was just a few meters away from the truth, he died as a brave soldier. And I must say, Levi made these last moments of Erwin's life only more sad, when he "Let Erwin rest". And it's ironic how these two started as "enemies" and then they became kinda friends. Just like Kenny and Uri did. Erwin Smith gave his heart, but he will live in our own hearts.

He didn't choose to save Armin. He *chose* to die, to fall with his soldiers in a suicide charge against the Beast Titan in order to atone for the innumerable sins he committed. He was a tired man, and Levi knew that if he forced his friend to continue on as the devil the Survey Corps needed him to be, then he would have broken. Levi knew that, and allowed his friend to, finally, rest. Saving Armin was a byproduct of that, had it been anyone else, I'm confident it would have ended the same, Erwin dying, and random, fatally wounded soldier turning into the Colossus Titan.
