Oh lordy... okay, this coming from someone who kinda fell into this after the manga chapters that gave this away were released but before S2 came out. So there were a lot of people who were anime only and didn't want Manga info. My understanding is that before the Manga Chapters that are in S3 were out, people weren't entirely sure what to make of Levi's heritage, which makes sense since he doesn't even say his last name. Considering Mikasa's status as a rarity due to her heritage, it seemed unlikely that Levi would also be Japanese. Most people in AoT are known to be of European descent, so I think somebody with way too much time on their hands looked up what region would be most likely to have dark hair and grey eyes and then came up with France? IDK, the way I found out about the theory was because many people called his Rivai instead of Levi (semantics I really don't care) but it was also easy enough to figure out that spelling it as Rivaille sounds exactly the same but follows the French rules of a lot of silent letters. From there I think it just kinda spread like a wildfire since there were a bunch of Anime Only people who didn't know that when someone called him Japanese in their fanfic they were giving lowkey spoilers. So yeah, that's my understanding of it.

Well, actually, Levi is French. Ackerman is an English last name and Levi is a common name in France. The reason that I've been told and that I read for people calling him Rivai is because of how Levi sounds when someone with a Japanese accent says, Levi. No one really seems to know where the Rivaille came from but most seem to think that it's from a mispronunciation of his name. People tend to think that he is at least part Japanese because he's related to Mikasa. However, the way that they are related would not make Levi Japanese in any way that you look at it. They are related because of Mikasa's dad, who was French, not Japanese, her mom is. Mikasa's dad is related to Levi's mom and uncle, and since he is French, that makes Levi's mom and therefore Levi French as well. I also remember reading in an interview with Isayama, he disclosed that Levi is supposed to be French. I tried finding the interview to link it but I can't find it. So, yes, Levi and Mikasa are related, they are cousins, but because they are related through Mikasa's dad and Levi's mom and not Mikasa's mom and Levi's mom, Levi is not Japanese, but instead French.

Andy Thorn I agree that he’s part French but I don’t think his surname is English (although the meaning could come from German or Old English). It’s most likely Jewish. Last name „Ackerman” is very common amongst Ashkenazi Jews and means „ploughman” in Yiddish (as well as in those 2 languages listed above). But that would make sense. Cuz Jews are kinda like Japanese - the best at everything they do. XD
