6:50 I’m glad you mentioned this. I remember watching Connie go crazy during their fight for the boat and thinking ohhhhh shittt that’s right this group of scouts are savages. Due to Levi and Mikasa being the top tier amongst the top tier, you tend to forget that ppl like Connie, Jean and Hange have fought right along side them and are in that position for a reason.

I really appreciate your commentary about Hange, I am one of those who saw this and didn’t have anyone to discuss this with. Hange is one of my favorite characters and by far the one that moved me the most seeing her death. Her passion is what makes her so easy to like.

A theme I missed the gravity of first watch through was how much everyone makes sacrifices or decisions for “humanity” when underneath is their own selfish motive. Erwin wanted to learn the truth. Levi wanted to die with his buddies/avenge them. Mikasa wanted to protect Eren. Historia wanted to do anything to protect those she loved. And when they could do those things with the guise or benefit of “defending humanity” that’s what helped them. And I think this is such a marker of human nature. The greater good only matters if you can find some personal reason to chase it, and that has been very apparent to me this 2nd watch through of the show. I don’t think it’s necessarily a negative thing, but rather a deep dive into human nature as we relate to our close loved ones, and how far that care can reach to the rest of humanity. It’s hard to think that we often only do good things for ourselves at the end of the day. I do think it makes the sacrifices stronger, but you also know that some people do that to feel like a hero. Again not a negative thing per se.

Hange was the GOAT. I always how she was so strong, like when she held Pastor Nick over the edge, or how she held herself against Mikasa (an Ackerman) as she tried to break her hand in Midnight Sun. Impressive. Did you notice that this is the very first time you see Jean cry? Over Hange’s death. I think he was just pushed too far.

He cried on Marco’s death I’m pretty sure and I really like the detail on how Jean is always somewhat trying to surpress his feelings or stress covering his hears and turning back like whenever Sasha died or he found out abt Marco’s death and he walked away and even hanged death

Hanji's death is tragic for Levi. Throughout the series, you see him lose everyone that he served with. She is the last one. You never hear him be patriotic. But for Hanji, for the first time in the series, you hear Levi say, "Dedicate your heart."

ahh these videos make my day! the rumbling was so heartbreaking, we’ll miss hange 💔 i really enjoy your interpretation of the story. i know you said you were worried about talking about some of the themes, but i think you did it justice! can’t believe this series is almost over already 🥲 i loved (feels a bit weird to say i LOVED.. but) how the show unfolded. i think the messages are so important and it portrays it so well. i also understand the people who don’t like the direction it went! it’s a lot 😭 but i think that’s why it’s so popular, there’s something for almost everyone to take from it, even if it’s just the cool titan fights lol.

Regarding if Eren even has any control over his actions or if he is fully in control, I believe it's paradoxically and rather fittingly both. Mikasa says in "Dawn of humanity" that Eren has always been this way and implying that the results of the current events in the story are because who Eren is at his core, plus, Eren mentions in this episode and the previous one that he wanted this to happen and that everything so far has happened because of his will. But it's also worth mentioning that everytime Eren or someone else says that the events of the story are occuring because of him and that he has free will, there are just as many points being made in the story about how he has no choice due to future memories and other outside forces like Ymir or the rest of the world.

I personally disagree with it not being Eren, but I do get how that could be an interpretation too. I think it's more akin to Eren being shackled to his nature. He hates his future actions, yet he cannot accept Paradis being destroyed. Between the two options, he chooses to act like he is, because Paradis is what matters most to him.

Not just Paradis being destroyed. He can’t accept that even after finally getting beyond the walls he’s still not free. What pushes him to this decision, imo, is the limited time he has left. He wants to experience “freedom”, but he only has four years to do so before he dies. He could hope and search for a diplomatic solution, but there is no guarantee that solution will come along. His future memories, on the other hand, have given him a clear path forward to his goals. However, he’s not someone who murders for fun or even enjoys killing all these people, so there is this guilt that he grapples with. Ultimately, his nature and insatiable desire for “freedom” push him toward his CHOICE and push his guilt aside. This all is a callback to his conversation with Reiner. Reiner admits that he too made a choice with terrible consequences for others because of internal motivators-wanting to be a hero and respected. The guilt tears them both apart, but their nature pushed them toward the choice. That is why Eren tells him “I knew it we are the same after Reiner confesses it was his choice and not merely embodiment.”

Ymir has a child's form and she has been following the Royal Family's order for 2000 years....... How can that lead to the theory that she's this manipulative God that's controlling Eren. That's so contradictory to her actions till now because if she's capable of acting in a manipulative and smart way then why had she been following the orders of anyone with Royal Blood in the path? She has the mind of a child because she was enslaved as a child and turned into the tool and concubine of the first King Fritz and didn't grow up mentally to the level of a mature woman. It's as simple as that.

I do like your take on Ymir being a godlike figure in control of Eren's actions, but I have a different interpretation of what happened. What I think happened is that ever since touching Historia's hand, Eren's mind started to be bombarded with memories of his future self. Of course humans also always have memories of their past, and they are experiencing the present at the same time, except Eren also had the meories of past Attack titan holders. The result of this was Eren was constantly in a state where he was perceiving his past, present and future at the same time. Human brains are just not built to process this, and it essentially broke him. We also saw Eren had a tendency towards violence in his childhood. That I think is his own personality trait, and I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing, if the person controls themselves and directs the anger correctly. But when Eren started experiencing this infinite time memory loop, his mind lost the ability to keep control of his base instinctual emotions like rage. That is what made him capable of doing things he probably wouldn't do if he had a more sound mental state. I also think this explains the part where he told Armin that he drove Dinah to kill Carla. I don't think that is true. The Attack titan was nowhere near that event, and we haven't seen the founding titan have the ability to influence titans in the past from the present. Because Eren is experiencing the past, present and future simultaneously, he has lost the ability to distinguish between timelines. So when he is seeing memories of his young self as Dinah is about to eat Carla, Eren feels as though he is there with his powers to command titans through the founding titan's power, and he could stop it from happening. But he actually can't, his mind is too broken to realize that.

> 'he has lost the ability to distinguish between timelines. ' -- there is only 1 timeline... AoT is a single deterministic timeline. > 'we haven't seen the founding titan have the ability to influence titans in the past from the present.' -- we have seen. we just didn't know it was Founder Eren down the line. eg. Ep 4x3 - Dina ignoring Bertholdt to move towards Carla (Carla dies as the result).... Ep 2x12 - Dina co-incidentally reaching Eren's location (just so that Eren & scouts survive the surely-death scenario) (Hannes dies as a result) --- Carla dying is also important, because that's what convinces Grisha to hand over the titans to Eren. (Remember his sentiment before that was 'Zeke, please stop Eren') > 'he could stop it from happening. But he actually can't,...' you're right about this part... but not for the reason you state --- the true reason is - that would destroy the consistency of the timeline... that's why his head is a mess... he can't change that...for if he does... he wouldn't have the Founder's power in his hands in the first place.

@@scubed9227 >there is only 1 timeline... AoT is a single deterministic timeline. - I apologize for the confusion. I didn't mean to imply there were separate branching timelines. There is one timeline that Eren is experiencing an infinite closed time loop. From his perspective, it becomes difficult to tell if he is experiencing what is happening in the present, or he is seeing events that already "happened" in the future, or if he is seeing his past memories, or the past memories of other Attack titans. >we have seen. we just didn't know it was Founder Eren down the line. (Remember his sentiment before that was 'Zeke, please stop Eren') - I don't see how any of these confirm these were actions that happened due to the influence of the founder. I choose to interpret Dinah killing Carla as coincidence, nothing more. I don't see how season 2 episode 12 is relevant at all either, it shows nothing to do with the past at all. >you're right about this part... but not for the reason you state - I think both things can be true. Eren doesn't have the power to change what has already happened, and what "will have already happened", because they have already happened. But also, he can't use the Founding titan's at a point in the timeline when he didn't have the Founding titan's power, because he didn't have the Founding titan's power at that point in time.

I still don’t understand the Zeke hate. How could she think he’s worse than Flock? Zeke was an abused child who spent his entire adult life trying to bring world peace.
@jocelyntrishell
@jocelyntrishell 2 ай бұрын
That argument, I think is a major part of the show. Peace can only be achieved at what cost? Childhood abuse is never an excuse for adult actions, but simply an explanation to understand. I think Zeke thought he was doing what was right, which is what makes his character a good villain. He made villainous choices that are the opposite of peace. This whole show is cognitive dissonance bc from any viewpoint, someone is the villain. We see so many perspectives in season 3-4 that counter each other, who is right who is wrong is what the show gets us to consider. In the end I think personal interactions and choices matter more than the greater good intentions. So most people in the show are not “good” but are very imperfect humans.
@Supergh0stTV
@Supergh0stTV 2 ай бұрын
@ idc about that analysis of Zeke. What I care about is how can she ignore all those points in an effort to compare him to Flock in terms of who is more of a bad person. The entire way we make good or bad judgements about a persons character is based on their intent of their actions.
@fratystuff6737

Its ok to hate Zeke. In fact, it should be encouraged. He's a villain. Not even a very sympathetic one at that. Just because you understand where he comes from, doesn't make him any less of a villain. Zeke's actions did a lot worse that Floch's. He also represents one of the most negative philosophies of our time, existential nihilism, which should be categorically rejected.

I agreed with you completely...... UNTIL you brought "World Peace" into the conversation. His plan isn't as logical or cynical as you might think. Just ask yourself why his plan was called "Euthanasia" which means "Mercy Killing" and not "Sterilisation" even though it explains the plan perfectly.

@@scythe9734 idc what you judge of the process of how he’s getting there, that was his goal. Which is completely different from Flocks goal of creating a new Eldian Empire. I do wish there was more acknowledgement by English publishers /translators of AoT material that Hange is actually written as Hans in the Japanese promotional material when the name is rendered in English, and the character is apparently non-binary. Hansi is another form of the name Hans, that has been used traditionally as both a boy's and a girl's name. I just feel like putting this out here because it's never brought up.
@hian
@hian 2 ай бұрын
Hange is not "apparently" non-binary. There had been people who had asked Isayama about her sex at some point, and surprised by this, he decided not to elaborate due to not wanting to upset fans with one conception over the other, stating, "I can see how someone might see her as a man/manly". Hange does however have blatant femine features such as breasts, uses female pronouns, is seen wearing skirts, has a female voice actor etc. As for promosional material, this is also only partially correct. The Japanese promotional material for season 2 had her pegged as Zöe Hange, with the third season as Hans, presumably in the aftermath of Isayama's interview and stance. You can easily affirm this by going to the shingeki tv website and looking up the character bios for each season. Additionally, in an interview with the author in the Monthly Attack on Titan Official Figure Collection, he stated that "In the anime and live-action versions, she is a woman," and in the original setting materials collection included as a first-run bonus with the second movie Blu-ray and DVD, he stated that "Although, I intend her to be a woman, I feel it's not impossible to percieve her as a man." Reading that as some sort of toe-dipping into purposefully making the character non-binary is a really strange reach. Moreover, the idea that there's something her for the English publishers and translators "to acknowledge" is even stranger. What's there to acknowledge?

@@hian well, I never said it was toe-dipping. I think Isayama is interested in having characters that aren’t defined by how you perceive them. I was merely pointing out that the default, in English speaking countries at least, is to simply see Hangi as a woman. Even the VA, Romi Park, has said that she approached the character as though they were a woman when doing her first reading, and she was told that wasn’t it. Yes it is deliberately unresolved, probably so that they have a sort of universal identifiability among fans. Perhaps using the term non-binary isn’t applicable, but I think it probably is- from a broader point of view.
