Attempted Water Damage & Board Level Repair

Attempting to repair a water damaged iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s' as well as attempting my first board level repair, soldering a new iPhone 4s battery connector.

When you're soldering, you should try to heat up the metal before putting solder on it. When the solder sticks to the soldering iron, it does not come off as easily and can lead to it being harder.

You should get an ultrasonic cleaner. That’ll allow you to clean the contacts underneath the CPU without removing the shields. Also you should get some solder wick to help you remove the extra solder on the iPhone battery connector. When I soldered in a new dock connector for my iPod 2g I first desoldered the connector using hot air gun. After that I removed the extra solder with solder wick. Then I used plenty of solder to solder in the new port. Then I removed the extra with solder wick. But great video as always! Keep up the great work!

You should clean the connector points with solder wick and then use the flux and set your soldering station to an appropriate temperature

Great video as always! If you plan to continue board level repairs, I suggest you get a professional soldering station with a hot air gun and also a big box of flux! Also ultrasonic cleaner with a specially made cleaning liquid will work good for water damaged boards.

in the case of water damage, you can let the board dipped in isopropyl alcohol a couple of days, actually there is a little machine were you put the board submerged in alcohol and it will heat the alcohol and start shaking it so the rust and dirt can get off the components easily.

I don't know if you have this stuff in your country, but here we use neophaline. IPA is just to bad. I doesn't evaporate quick enough, leaves residue, condensation.... Talk to the lady from iPad Rehab, maybe she can help you with some problems

You can put the boards in a oven and bake them.. this works for repair shops.. and for cleaning... a special soap inside an Ultrasonic cleaner.. itll vibrate and get all the filth out of the board

From the looks of it you need to use more flux and raise the temp of the soldering iron

I tried to solder the same battery slot, but melted it and just gave up, I never tried a heat station gun

You use to low temp , you need to use for shield removal 450c 500c different to each station, to remove components use 410c 100airflow quick 861dw to put back u need to use 380c with low air flow around 50 % of your station ADd flux heat for 2-3 minuts until chip sits on its OWN

I had a problem where my mom’s water damaged 5S wouldn’t work with original screens but after market ones worked just fine. Maybe try that with the iPhone 5 if you haven’t already.

Hi Hugh, I suggest getting an electric toothbrush for repairing water damaged electronics. Works much better! I bought DIY electronics from China to practise on my soldering skills. Always use flux, makes a lot of difference (& lifetime). Soldering is not that difficult, but hard to master it. Well done anyways and thanks for the video.

Buy a new screen. The alcohol has killed your screen. I wouldn't suggest people to put alcohol on their phone, only clean the logicboard after you have taken it out of your phones housing, and make sure you let it dry before you try.

Actually it´s not. If you open your phone right after you dropped it then yes it sure is. But if you open it after a day it might not be noticeable that there was any water inside of it but if you succeed in takin of the metal brackets, then you will see water. Quick answer If you open it right after you dropped it -> Yes, If you wait a little while -> No (Maybe)
