I didn't even think about doing a fairy flip. That really would have given me the pattern I wanted. I'll have to give it a go on my next try!

One more thing, squaring dies for your press will help you a ton. I don’t mill the 4-ways, just use the squaring dies. 👍

That is gorgeous! I think it would make a really cool Scottish Sgian Dubh. I'm in a Pipe Band and we all wear our own Sgain Dubh rather than band issued matchy matchy ones. From one Soldier to another, I'd be honored to purchase this from you and wear it with pride. Also, glad to see you step out of your comfort zone and try something you've always wanted to do.

I would make a nakiri or a petty knife out of it. Otherwise, fancy bottle openers!! Next time, try to ladder it. With a fine basketweave like that, it comes out a really neat pattern. That's, of course, if you don't want to tile it, which is tricky if you have a short stock like that. Good work!
@brysonalden54142 жыл бұрын
Although the pattern isn't what you were shooting for, it is still very eye-catching. I would be inclined to go with a hidden tang, possibly welding some allthread to the end so you can do a pommel and save as much of that nice steel for the blade as possible.

@robinschlyter3092 жыл бұрын
You can´t have enough seaxes really. A smaller one more for eating or fixing would be beautiful. Want to add some bronze or brass, a "swiss dagger" is something of an allrounder with as a fancy grip you can be bothered with. If you want a project out of your comfort zone, check out different kinds of "rondell daggers". Not much of a tool as it is a weapon but it has interesting shapes and parts. Good video as always!

how about a few small double-edged survival knives, flat ground on the base side, pyramid on the top face, with a thumb hole near the base of the blade and 4 thong holes so it could be tied to a stick as either a spear or as an extended handle? length about 4.5" width about 1.75"-2" thick about .2" ... something that would show off the pattern in all its glory! cheers! EDIT: the idea would be to replicate the concept of the percussion bulb of flint-knapped blades from ancient times, brought forward to the modern material. iirc, a fellow designed one like this for a pocket survival kit as a neck knife, about 20 or so years ago, but i have never seen it offered in production. the idea being it is the last blade on you when everything goes wrong. Cheers from Vancouver, Canada.

Turned out quite decent. My vote is of course towards a knife, or perhaps, it'd made a cool marlin spike with a flared end, hole, and piece of leather or paracord lanyard.

That style of basket weave I think you need to tile weld it so pattern doesn’t stretch out

Maybe do some nice wood chisels. Just something different than a knife. I don't mind a knife at all just throwing something else out there.

It’s important to completely encase the metal that’ll be your final piece when forge welding. Decarb will add bright spots to your pattern. Another option is grinding .060 after every heat
@matarax08082 жыл бұрын
Awesome work!! You might not think so, but I love the pattern! As for what knife to make from it, I've never seen you make a Tracker style knife (now, I'm an amateur smith, and I have no idea if that's enough material to do it) but maybe you've got enough there to make a hidden tang EDC Tracker blade? Maybe it's just me, but I think that would be badass!

Definitely a worthwhile experiment. Mosaic damascus patterns are really finicky, and about 75% of the time, they're not going to look like what you had originally envisioned. Takes a LOT of trial and error when working out new patterns, even for damascus aces like Will Stelter.

Yeah I don't know why I didn't even think about a fairy flip. It was one of those projects where you get in that "oh man this will be cool I need to do this right now" mindset. So I didn't plan the best. All part of the never ending pursuit of greatness
