We Lutonians have faced it all; EDL, BNP, Al-Muhajiroon, Gang crime, Inter-Muslim conflicts and list goes on. But alhamduliAllah there is still progress and cohesiveness in this small town. People do come together and are trying to make a positive change here. In sha' Allah we witness the fruits of our positive labour and dispel the evil that resides.

Fascinating podcast. Opened my eyes even further to life in Asian communities. Malik sounds like he does a lot of positive work in and around the community. Very interesting 👍🏻

My Irish parents came to Luton in 1950's and raised us five children here. We also heard comments which could be deemed racist but integrated and proved our worth to society, we were 'poor working class' but knew the way out was hard work which gained us respect. None of us felt the need to deal drugs or take part in criminal acts. Luton gave us a good living, not the riches which youngsters seem to think is their right these days, but the ability to earn honest money buy our own homes and pay our bills. We all know the difference between right and wrong the path we choose to walk is our own choice.

Most of the 1st generation pakistanis have worked their backs off and bought property businesses etc, it's a small number of youngsters dealing. You should see the state of Dublin Ireland, the council estates there are riddled with drugs and pure poverty.
@willowtree41212 жыл бұрын
@@gooduH786 Totally agree that the 1st generation Pakistanis worked hard and gained respect, but we are not talking about that generation here are we. Not sure what the reference to Dublin's council estates is about but anyone who knows Irish history will know that poverty and Ireland have gone hand in hand for many generations. 'A small number of youngsters dealing' comment is correct, but although Pakistanis do not represent the highest number of Luton residents they do represent the highest number of drug dealers, unless of course the courts and papers only report those with Asian names, which I somehow doubt. Turning a blind eye , or making excuses as to why drug dealing goes on, reflects badly on a community.

Same, Irish parents who moved and settled here in Luton in the 1960s.. We were poor, my Dad worked a manual labour job and we grew up with not much, but also didn't turn to criminality or drug dealing. Today's youngsters in Luton, and unfortunately it seems mainly the Asian community, are only interested in quick money which inevitably means drug dealing, which has given them a bad name, which they seem to enjoy having.

I lived in Luton for 3 years . I moved there for university from Wales. I grew up with Asians e.g people of Pakistani heritage so I was familiar with the culture and religion. Obviously compared to Wales there was a much larger presence of Asians but it was never alien to me and I've always respected Pakistani and Muslim culture finding it very hospitable. The thing that scratched my head in luton was, the amount of people who identified as Irish. It was always the same story from them. " I'm not english I'm Irish my parents moved here from the old country to find work "

There is a large Irish population in Luton, descendants of the 1950 immigrants. If their parents (or grandparents) were born in Ireland they are automatically Irish citizens by birth, even if they themselves were born in England, so they would have been quite correct in their statement of being Irish. Although my parents were Irish I identify as British (of Irish descent) this is where I was born and choose to live, others may not feel the same, hence identifying as Irish.

Your statement is a good thought !! But you yourself know that a Muslim is not allowed to speak ill of another Muslim !! There lies the problem !!!. So in reality no one will allow you to have that discussion !!!. Haram money is not seen as a problem by the Muslim society anymore !!! It's now all about the bling and how you can show off to your people !!!. Look at weddings and the cars that are hired !!! It's all about the quick money !!!

I get that in your line of work you have to represent criminals and I agree with your justifications to do so, but how can you ever be comfortable with the local delinquents forcing away a potential client just because it's on their 'turf'? That to me is capitulation, and accepting and buying into the notion that criminals run your local area. Worrying to see a decent, educated and successful brother have the mindset that they have to respect these criminals and their customs. Reminds me of how mosque elders show utmost respect to the local drug dealer because they bring success to the local area and drive the mosque donations.
