Yes people sometimes take them to a shop and the shop says 95.00 estimate fee and they take them to recycling. There is a certain vintage audio shop out in these parts that has been caught doing just that. I had a customer tell me they took some speakers in as the foams had rotted only to be told it would cost too much to fix. My client (this was before they became my client) left them to be recycled because they didn't want to transport these large JBL 12" to recycling. The shop put in 5.00 of speaker foams and promptly put them in the showroom for 1500. Customer found them on the web site 3 days after they left them behind. Believe it or not this js common. I have had many jobs referred to me by that client.

So many things these days are a simple repair. It's getting the right parts that's difficult. I sure miss the days when I could get parts from Component Technology which was only 2 miles away.

Obtaing spare parts is now becoming a headache, most of the independant shops have closed or changed to mailorder only, with ever increasing delivery prices this makes low value items such as belts or capacitors very expensive. I ordered many belt kits over the years, but as said, once you use the few useful sizes the rest are never used. I now only order packs of the popular sizes to save having dead stock. When i closed my shop i was horrified at the amount of unused parts i had bought that were now only of use for restoring older gear, but you don't see many CRT TV's anymore. Vintage Hi-Fi are now my staple diet of repairs, but again switches that were once easily found are no longer available, thank god for deoxit.

Great save and fix, such a nice device. Shipping costs have indeed increased in recent years so much it puts me off from online shopping, I rather buy from local store if possible. In 2010's managed to order via ebay from UK some very good price / quality ratio stuff, but then of course UK did the Brexit, and I'm in EU, so now that source is gone.

I have repaired lots of Yamaha cd players. The disc motors will develop bad spots on the commutator, and will have to be replaced. Even if it looks like the motor has “revived” itself, it will just fail again. They are just cheap, low power dc motors.

Sure are.

I don't necessarily agree with putting used belts in stuff that is going up for sale or being repaired for customers, but shipping is much better here in the UK. The only thing I would have done on this is cleaned the lens as you can hear the focus struggling when it loads the disc.

What is the difference between a slightly used belt and one you purchase from his knows where that is a new old stock that has been sitting in a plastic bag for 25 years. I wish I had pictures of the last belt kit I bought for an rca vcr. It was about 10 years ago but I am positive the belts had been in the palace since 1982. Suggesting i should spend 10 for 1 in a unit that will fetch perhaps 40 is crazy. It might not even get 40 bucks. This stuff does not sell for much around here. I can to to value village and buy cd changers for 10-20 every day. So getting 40 for a serviced unit when an untested can be had for half that is tough. People in these parts are educated and when we want a good laugh we look at ebay. So no it doesn't make sense to put money into something that may never sell. I have so much repaired crap in my garage I can't give away which it likely what is going to happen. It will be given to value village so they can sell it for 10-20 bucks.

@@12voltvids I've done quite a few boombox and cd-based video game console repairs and have found that the belt kits I order from eBay appear, to me at least, to be new rubber. No cracking or anything. I haven't had any issues with belt quality. Perhaps new stock is being made? There are a lot more belt kits available online now than there were even a year ago.
@ashleycox4322 ай бұрын
There are good belt suppliers out there who manufacture new belts to a very high quality, not just sell NOS belts from 30 years ago. Here in teh UK we can buy them for around £3.50GBP each from the best supplier with free shipping, but shipping in the US and Canada is I will admit absolutely ridiculous.
@12voltvids2 ай бұрын
I have bought "new" belts and they are so old that there is a halo around the belt where it was sitting in the bag off gassing that discolored the plastic bag. This has happened more than once. The seller was too cheap to pull the old belt and put it in a new bag. There may be new belts being made but there are tons of nos being sold for premium prices. Most are fine because the ones that turn to goo would have done that in the package. Spending 10 bucks to get a new belt for something I am dumping for 20 to 40 makes no sense to me. And no, quite frankly I don't give a crap how long it lasts for the buyer and really nobody does. Same when someone buys something new at a store. Do you really thing the owner of the shop cares if it lasts or not. No. They don't.
@tacofortgens3471Ай бұрын
@@ashleycox432 ofcourse but you aint getting out what u put into the repair. Peiple dont want to pay $20 + $80 labor for a high quality premium belt. People want it to work and as cheap as possible , if a slighly used belt works for them, and they are happy with it who gives a damn

I prefer to use Molykote EM-30L. Specially for plastic to plastic, plastic to metal as well as metal to metal. Recently got a 2 oz. jar from Amazon. It’s the real deal. $17.95 (US) but it will last me for the rest of my life.

Is that Yamaha a 2 stroke? Just kidding. Interesting. I like the way those work. I've always said I'd like one with a clear top to watch the mechanism. They always want to hide things. Cassettes, CD's Video cassettes, etc. Our first VCR was a top loader. Could watch the reels turn. Same for audio cassette players, some you can watch the reels turn easily. Edit; I would try putting 6th disc in there. Especially if I couldn't see what was going on inside, and didn't know exactly how it worked. Unless the instructions warned me of damage if I tried it. My need to experiment gets me into trouble sometimes. (A lot). Like having to reinstall Windows XP dozens of times because I experimented learning how to use a computer and all the functions.

I have the same model, I like it. Edit: It's a little strange though that, unlike many other brands of players, on the remote there's no button to select a disc directly. You have to use the disc skip buttons. You can do it on the player's front panel though.

@chrome2infinity9382 ай бұрын
It's the cost of simply delivering it. There is a minimum charge for shipping. It covers the driver and his pay and benefits. The cost of the truck and it's maintenance and everything else associated with shipping a rubber band.
