Glad to see this video Kris. I had some doubts about the temporary fix.

Yeah David I took too much for granted I assumed everyone would know it was temporary and then I got to thinking

That was a big help. I’ve no hot water on AC, but propane is fine. 50/50 it’s the relay, or the element itself.
@OLDMANCOFFEEАй бұрын
If it's not the relay and you got power to the relay then it's probably the element again I'm not an expert I just know what worked for me

I was at Westgate Thursday for the Manilow show. Walked through sportsbook/ poker area before show but figured you were still in the wild. Probably see you at a Trooper Thursday in the future. Did not play 3-6 because 3 shows this trip took up most of my bank. Thanks for the informative vlog OMC!!

I have an Attwood GE16EXT combo GAS/Electric water heater. I believe there is a design problem on the controller board that causes infant mortality (some might call it a retroactive abortion) of the PCB's transistor that sends 12VDC to energize the Relay mounted behind the heater that sends 120VAC to the heating element. I have had to replace the potted controller TWICE in a 3-year period because the yellow wire was not getting energized. Otherwise, a $0.25 transistor is all that would be necessary. The Propane portion of the heater was working. It is good engineering practice to add a DIODE (1N4001) to clamp the back EMF produced when the relay is deenergized. I soldered the Cathode to the yellow wire and the Anode to the Green wire in position #6 of the connector. This way the new controller's transistor will not be damaged in the future. The PCB's relay that sends power to the Gas Valve may very well have a similar issue but there is no way to add a protection diode due to the potting compound.

Wow, thanks for sharing your technical expertise! That's an interesting fix and definitely something I want to look into further.

I can easily see myself making such a temporary fix, wanting to shower and irritated that my water heater is acting up....my only fear is that I'd forget to undo the fix and cause damage to the water heater. Or lifting the safety on the water heater tank. Or something else that would probably scare the hell out of me. Thanks for this. Ken in Phoenix
@OLDMANCOFFEE Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's just a TEMPORARY fix until you can make the repair....you have to remember to only leave it on until the water is hot then turn it off BEFORE you take that shower..

Ken, I made the fix yesterday as we live on a small island in our fifth wheel and there is no one to resolve such a problem. For now, I regulate the amount of electricity to the tank on the breaker and have figured out that 45 mins heats the water up to 50C/120F which works. I set a reminder on my phone but I agree this is not a long-term solution. It will work for now.

It worked and is a good way to prove the issue is not the heating element if one does not have a voltmeter. I am regulating it on the breaker, timing it for 45 mins on time, until I can figure out if it is the relay, thermostat or circuit board. I changed the propane/electric switch, so it s not that.

That's great I'm glad that you were able to take advantage of that video remember and I'm sure you will it is just a temporary fix and I'm glad it's your monitoring it so you don't damage your water heater good job👍👍

Hello I'd like to thank you for the very much appreciated and informative video also I enjoyed the comical aspect as well. I watch alot of how to and diy videos and for the first time in my KZbin life I'm about 20 yty's (KZbin years old) lol I have never taken the time to comment on a video yet until now. Thank you again. Keep making the videos you are a great teacher and as well as being able to correct your mistakes is a plus . Looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work. I noticed you have a replacement control board by Dinosaur board. Best board in the business. Must of had a previous issue. You should have given voltage readings during your diagnosis. Readings give a better visual of what is going on. But finding the relay was a lucky find. Thanks for the post.

Darn Relays!
@coddiwomplerv37559 ай бұрын
I've been chasing the issue of intermittent electric working, and when it didn't the heater would just automatically turn on the gas to heat the water. Put on the Dinosaur board....nope.....put on new t-stats.....nope. My final solution is the relay. Which is buried in the coach's closet! With that said I'll replace the element to. I appreciate the detail of the relay segment!
@OLDMANCOFFEE9 ай бұрын
I didn't have to replace the element although I did buy one to replace if needed the water heater was only about a year old just a faulty relay switch to begin with thanks for watching
@rodenti Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this information. I used your explaination and a multimeter to determine that my relay was bad by ruling out the heating element (10 ohms), AC power, and DC power. It is very strange though that my green ground wire is capped off and only the yellow DC voltage wire with the two black AC wires were hooked up to the relay. The connection for the ground was left empty. The water heater on electric worked fine up until last week, so the ground must be unnecessary.

Recently got this used RV. The control panel and circuit board both had burned wires. When I replaced them (and the element) it always blows a dc fuse when the control panel switch is turned on for the electric water heater. Gas no problem. Any idea on what the problem is? Someone said maybe the wires, somewhere, are shorting but I have no clear idea on how to find the wire that's causing the problem. Could it be the relay? Thanks
@OLDMANCOFFEEАй бұрын
Well I'm not an expert but it sounds like a short somewhere in the DC line the relay functions on the AC so I doubt very much that it's the relay, the problem with issues like that on the DC side I really should be checked out by a professional and they can follow the circuits to find out Define out what's causing the problem and why it's shorting out, good luck and I hope you get your problem solved
@Hlpus1nallАй бұрын
@@OLDMANCOFFEE Appreciate your reply. At least you've saved the time with the relay. I bought a Sperry Wire Tracker (and slowly learning how to use it). Even though I knew nothing about these kinds of things I've replaced many things on that WH. Don't know anyone around where I'm at that work on these kinds of things and the RV is permanently in one spot so hope to try a few more things myself. Thanks.

It doesn't really matter it's all one wire it's just cut and connected to the relay so it doesn't matter it's just one black wire

I got a new water heater and the wires are different colors im lost
@OLDMANCOFFEE Жыл бұрын
The colors of the wires are not important my water heater is new also probably about 2 years old it's just the two wires going to the relay they should be the same color and by disconnecting those wires from the relay and connecting them together you bypass the relay remember this is only a temporary fix do not leave your water heater on for more than about 20 minutes or when the water is hot enough then turn it off until you get a new relay
