Being a 6th generation Perth boy born in 1984, I remember them very well. Rode them many times.

I used to flat in New Market AkL and take these trains down to Takanini for work mid 90's, hardly anyone on them.

If I remember correctly, the last station on the Southern Line used to be Pukekohe Railway Station
@spil0303 ай бұрын
Yes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Auckland_railway_stations. Even at the historic peak of rail traffic, the southern line didn't extend south of Pukekohe. Perhaps one day when we have regular inter-city trains, we'll have stops south of Pukekohe on those, resurrecting some long closed stations on NIMT!

When I saw this video in my feed, I thought these were new or freshly overhauled trains, not ones that were finishing!

Do you know if there will be a farewell tour like the ADKs and SAs had ?

No idea I'm afraid. From what I've heard, it sounds unlikely. If I get a chance, I'll ask though

Do some maintenance on these Passenger Trains and put them on the Huapai to Swanson sector. No problem going through that pesky tunnel all our leaders use as an excuse not to have passenger trains from out west.

Hi Phill. Not my area of expertise, but I understand (and may have commented in the video) the trains are actually well past their expiry date. I think some of them have even been sold off already. Secondly, as I understand it, the requirements for trains to run through tunnels has changed in the last few years following the publishing of the Pike River Mine Disaster report. These trains would no longer meet safety requirements ... in other words, if they broke down in the tunnel and there was a fire, everyone would probably die, most likely from aphixiation. Instead of repeating this idea, it's better to think of new ideas. I'm a historian, not a town planner, so I can't provide those I'm afraid. Andre Brett's book "Can't Get There From Here" covers all of this quite well.

@@spil030 the northern explorer, trans alpine express, Taieri gorge railway, coastal pacific Wairarapa connection and capital connection are all diesel-electric-hauled services that travel through tunnels. Every day at least a dozen diesel-electric hauled freight trains goes through the kaimai tunnel.

From what I understand; while the ADL’s might be able to squeeze through the Waitakere tunnel, they still have a loading gauge too large, in that the clearance’s between the train and the tunnel are unsafely not large enough. So if a train broke down within the tunnel; there wouldn’t be enough clearance to safely get people out. I think the busway to Massey is planned to be used by buses from Kumeu, Huapai, etc.
