The progression of this software is beautiful to see. I remember using Audacity to record a dry bass recording for my high school jazz band. Now I could practically use it as my main DAW. Once this gets fully-fledged MIDI support-perhaps Musescore file import integration?-Audacity could become a free one-stop shop for all things composition, mixing and sharing.

I used PT for years, then heard about this one, tried it out, and never went back. I'm not a pro, so I have no idea if it's robust enough for that playground, but it is well powered for what I need it for.

I would rather that Audacity focus on being a good audio editor, and not try to be a DAW.

Way back in 2007 I recorded an audio book with Audacity using my Mac to record, no mic. I was traveling through S. America in an ex-police surveillance van, so fully carpeted on all sides. It was my mobile studio. Great times. Now I'm finishing my first film. I'd been dragging my feet on the narration, but began yesterday using an old mic and a newer Mac! Feeling really good about all this, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Audacity keeps getting better and much closer to modern DAW's including Ableton Live and others... nice update including using VSTs and the master effects channel which works in real-time.

I'm a small-time creator that had no money to even start, just used an old Blue Yeti my friend passed down to me and was preparing to use... whatever free recording software came with Windows... until I found Audacity. This was YEARS ago now, and even though my creations never really got me anywhere, Audacity still has a strong hold in my hobbies and has taught me boatloads about recording and sound mixing just by using the program. From the bottom of my broke little heart, thank you for making this free to use. I'm not in as dire straits as I was years ago, and technically can afford a studio program, but honestly, why would I? I have everything my script-reading little heart needs right here. I'd much rather support Audacity and its accessibility for all as well as its features. This is the future for creativity I want to see: Free resources and tools, zero gatekeeping, no obstacles like subscription fees or high costs, just good quality mediums, ready and available for anyone to use.

As always - amazing progress, with (from the outside) hard to understand priorities. You mention people working with loops. Can we please get the grid lines to show through the clip backgrounds so we can actually use them to align waveforms themselves to the beat grid? It’s baffling to not see this afaik common request addressed when so many other UI concerns get so much love! :-) Thank you for all of your hard work on reviving Audacity!

bless you. I totally gave up on Adobe and Sequoita/Vegas crash like they just got home from actual Vegas for the weekend. I love Reason but ugh, Audacity is the only audio tool that doesn't hurt my wrist afterwards. Excited to test this out and want to send some feedback on the envelope overlap rules and stuff. Really bang up job, aaaand I just realizd this is 3 weeks old fuccc.

Unlike the hundreds of experienced users here, I've only just begun to discover home-recording, although I've had Audacity on my laptop for a very long time. I'm making an effort to find work in voice acting and narration, and already have found Audacity to be a wonderful tool. I'm guessing though, that I'm barely scratching the surface. I need to do a short course!

Fantastic! Well done!! My little 1% fix suggestion is the zoom. It goes from too far in to WAAAYYY too far out zoomed so the waveforms about about 2pixels wide or to barely being seen. It goes from having a waveform window view of about 3 mins, to scrolling on the mouse to about 10 hours in one scroll and not being able to see the audio - It's just a bit crazy at the moment. I would also like to suggest having a "right-click drag" to move the waveforms around too. Just small things (and yes, I'm still an old Audition 3 user ;) ) Love your work! I've also been using since pre v1.

Yeah I don't think it really looks right unless you have Windows itself set to dark mode. It doesn't override any of the standard Windows styling (titlebar, status bar, etc.) - hopefully something they can address in a future update.

Great work! Now we need to have all the existing filters ported to this new architecture. I wish we could use all the existing filters for DAW style editing, even if it needed some preprocessing + caching because existing filters do not support real-time operation.

No, but if you click on the ... menu in the track, there's some menu items which tell you the sample rate and bit depth.
