So what do you think? Clearly it’s a way off the Tesla Autopilot but it does some parts a bit better. The more competition the better 👍🏽 (no this wasn’t paid, you all asked for other autopilot like systems on the channel)

We have an edition one, have to say it's much less scary to drive than the Tesla's. Thing is both systems are really assistants, Audi set the expectation right, it's there to reduce fatigue and not be an autopilot. Tesla are trying to convince people it's an auto pilot when really it's just a very good assistant. As mentioned in the video, you think the Tesla knows what it's doing when in reality is only really a little better than what Audi and BMW have. FYI, I'm not anti Tesla, if it wasn't for them we probably wouldn't have a slew of EVs coming out now. Just working in many startups and knowing the mentality behind software in these companies, I wouldn't put your life in the hands of Audi, Tesla, etc for many many years. Until we have true fully conscious ai these systems are just glorified helpers.

I don't care for the vague operation of it. Either be in charge or don't. I haven't tried it myself but it seems so wishy washy that it offers no cognitive ease over simply driving on your own. It's like the limpest of hands on the steering wheel and you would be better off just driving on your own. Speed control aside. And what you classified as a sharp turn was but the faintest of curvatures and it gave up :) And perhaps most importantly, is there expectation of improvement over time or is it a set system only to improve on the next model?

FYI - You did not engage in the *Lane Centering* feature while in Adaptive Cruise. You activate it by clicking the button at the end of the Turn Signal stalk, and you’ll know it’s on bc you will see two green inward pointing arrows next to the green lanes. That”s probably why your car is “bouncing around”. Just wanted to make sure people knew the full capabilities of the adaptive cruise / auto drive feature. Also those are capacitative steering wheels. No “Pressure” needed, just need to touch it lightly and it will detect your hands are back on the steering wheel.

The OTA Updates will allow the Tesla to improve much easier but the question remains about the points made as the speed limits has been an issue for ages and if fixing the speed adjustments were easy why would they have not done it straight away as those are key parts of Autopilot. Tesla can’t read road signs that would be a good place to start

That ability is still being trained and tested through the neuro-network it’s seeing the signs and learning how we react when a sign appears (ie stop or yield) . @@erwile It doesn't seem random to me, a lot of the time it seemed to dislike the design of our white lines here in the UK, the absence of a white line on the edge of the single carriageway makes it hard for the autopilot to see where the edge of the road is so it hugs close to the white center line as possible. When the centreline jerks too much the car loses where the center is altogether.
@Adil1amin
@Adil1amin 4 жыл бұрын
I've got it on my car albeit an earlier version. Nevertheless it seems to me if you've got a nice set of white lines that aren't too bendy it'll do well. Arrows and dissappearance of white lines throws it off. You can almost feel when its in charge, its hard to describe, but the steering wheel gets heavier indicating that's in lane assist works. If the steering wheel gets light, it means it's lost the white lines.

@vaska00762
@vaska00762 5 жыл бұрын
The "best competitor" right now is Nissan's Pro Pilot on the Leaf 2018 models and later. Most systems in use in other competitor cars are really just lane assist systems, which keeps you from departing the lane. Very few manufacturers like the idea of a "pilot" system, mostly as the safety issue is the fact that the fail-safe state is to give control back to the driver, and the issue with a "pilot" system is that people can become complacent with it.

No drive assists are still better than current Tesla AP on roads around me (tested couple weeks back). But nah, Audi's assist package is just garden variety. This kind of suites are avialable for most premium brands nowadays. It's just that it's in e-Tron.
@Honeypot-x9s
@Honeypot-x9s 5 жыл бұрын
not the best competitor to Autopilot this is just an alternative. this is probably like 5th place maybe further back..? i think he just test driving this. i would put this on par with Nissan's system, kinda dumb and basic, bit blind, can be little drunk hunting for lane markers if it isnt sure or can only see partial or one but it can do some basic stuff, like maintaining distance, slowing down and speeding up fairly smoothly. not sure if it would avoid parked cars on side of the road or if it would stop for them, we dont have that problem where i am so i haven't tested it when test driving.. then again im not sure if e-tron is doing that or just matter of it swinging to the center line with that weird biased most partial self driving systems have. Volvo makes a decent system, but its still far behind Autopilot but i think its a step up from the e-tron/nissan system, in my opinion. here in the US at least the volvo system will slow down if it feels like needs to and it will avoid other cars its fairly aware of its surroundings, in terms of it ability to drive..its...its..okay? not best at cornering tight, does decent at maintaining, it can self park in most easy spots, including some wide open side street parking but angled bays it loses its shit and gets so confused unless you help it out. in terms of avoiding cyclists and parked cars, i have limited testing with it but i felt like it did okay, didn't feel confused by parked cars unless they were definitely out into the lane it will then slow down or try to figure it out go around or stop. even then few times where it felt like it didn't even see a parked car and got close passing it. i would say its basically like a first time licensed driver, not most confident, not most smooth but capable of figuring it out if give it space and time and help it out some it will help you out. but there are others, Mercedes has one, BMW is working on something, Nissan has one, Cadillac has one, Audi, Volvo... im sure even more. heres my take, none of these systems are even capable of competing with Tesla, they are all competing amongst themselves with tesla way ahead. out of all the alternatives, i think Volvo system is currently most capable in the real world.. mercedes and Cadillac claim their system is better and closer to Tesla's but thus far, yet to see that, only clever thing so far i seen is eye tracking, mercedes did demo their system being able to turn down side streets and able to navigate itself, however, yet to see that system in the real world outside of a few demos.

Funny enough almost all cars that have advance cruise control don't have a audio warning when it disengages (just visual, some cars like e-tron have lane warning steering vibrate when your to close to or over the line) What it should do when it cuts off when turning or on a bend it should have a slight chime or steering vibrate , straight roads no chime should be needed (unless car distance auto limiter was also disabled)

The reason why the lane assist does not keep you in the middle when you take your hands off is that the system learns the hand you are primary holding the steering. For example if you are holding, it permanently with the right hand, the weight of your hand would turn the car slightly to the right. This is why the side assist pushes against the weight of your hand (to the left) and holds you in the middle of the lane when your hand are ON the steering. If you are taking your hands off, it expects that you will take hands back on in a view seconds. That is why you are leaving the middle and bouncing from left to right. You can try to leave your hands off for a longer time (on a highway) and nudge the steering from time to time. The system will keep you in the middle of the lane.

I drive a q7, same tec. There are two options in settings with lane assist: late and early. If its' bouncing in lane then it's on late. This system is no different than a tesla and can be options on most new cars like ford, jeep, well anything really. As tesla owner's should know the gov has mandated a ten sec rule. If hand contact is lost for more than ten secs system disengages. The difference between the systems, auto pilot and lane assist, is tesla owner's climb in the back and crash with "auto pilot" on. Lane assist wording doesn't leave customers with an auto pilot feeling, given they should know better anyways. No system is perfect today but i use this system 90% of the time between speeds at 0-80 mph. Btw, love tesla and well any vehicle with this system. I did not understand what was so special with roundabouts? It looks to me like it just slows down for known intersections, probably gathered from maps data. Same with the curve icon, I don't think it's vision based? I'm curious what happens if the maps aren't up to date and the car thinks there's a roundabout in the middle of a straight road. Will it slow down?

Sorry to be a bum but at 2:25 the speed limit is not 70Mph it's 60 as there is only one lane in the opposite direction and it's not a dual Dual Carrageway. National speed limit signs on UK roads do not necessarily mean it's 70 mph, it's depends on the road.

I'd say these are the positives I take away from it in comparison to Autopilot: - When you pasted that truck, it started to accelerate quickly. Autopilot tends to wait a while after the vehicle is out of the way before acting on it. - The car seemed to do speed limits by the sign, not change speed limit at the sign. - I assume it automatically changed the speed up when you hit that national speed limit? If so, that's neat. - Quickly reacted to lane line changes, Autopilot tends to lag behind a bit or 'smooth' movements too heavily sometimes. In terms of the Autopilot pros I take away from this: - Autopilot seems to be smoother on the corners, following the curve better not swerving in and out. (But Autopilot does have 8 cameras to be fair, it can see a lot more!) - Autopilot keeps more in the center of the lane. (However, this causes it to hit every pothole possible in the UK)

My parents have an earlier version of this and I'm quite impressed by the speed limit stuff - I've not yet seen it caught out and get the limit wrong definitely a feature I wouldn't mind having. They have lane assist but it only really works for changing lanes on multi-lane roads unlike in this video and the keep distance feature occasionally gets confused and won't accelerate properly back to normal speed of its own accord.

I'd imagine this will also suffer from the same problems as most radar-based TACC, which is zero awareness of cut-ins, merge-outs and stationary traffic. Tesla is way ahead. I don't mind these flaws on my £16k Ioniq, but it's faintly ridiculous that an £80k Audi has the same issues.

Im a big proponent of assistance system that depend only on car embarked sensors, and not on any "cloud" or "collaborative" networks. That being said, it really seems like having the GPS assist the autonomous system in slowing down the car before a round about or a curve, is a very powerful safety layer to complement onboard sensors. I also think manufacturers should thrive to improve lane assist and lane recognition , before trying to go full AI. I also believe assistance systems should be ultra tunable by the user, so as to create assistance profiles in which, for exampl, you can still have automatic minimum distance keeping with the car in front, even when you control the brake, accelerator, and steering.

I have this car and I honestly think this must be one of the worst assist systems I've ever tried. The steering assist is so bad it often drifts so hard that you actually cross either one of the lines. I preferred the cheap and simple assist we had in our previous car, the Hyundai Ioniq. Also the adaptive cruise was better in the Ioniq actually working through roundabouts at any speed. Have driven most Teslas and Tesla is probably 10 years ahead when it comes to these functions, they are simply in a completely different league. Quite amazed of the lacking technology Audi has presented in this car when it comes to these functions and even more surprised that the author of this videos is so impressed by it.

I just want to see the comparison between a fully enabled Tesla Hardware 3.0 (with latest update) & the Audi Driver Assistant. Tesla Driver has been using a “Hobbled” Hardware 2.0 (The hardware system from 2017). That’s like comparing an iPhone 6 to an iPhone XS Max. Using Hardware 3.0 would make it more like comparing the latest MacPro Computer to the iPhone...

The reason mini roundabouts are recognized as intersections is that they are basically the same thing as an European equal priority intersection without traffic lights and traffic signs where you have to give way to any traffic from your right.

The fact that the car anticipates and slows down/accelerates as speed limit changes is really nice and this is one thing I have to do manually in the Tesla. I do wish that it were as progressive as the Audi. What I don't like about the system is that it is basically GPS based. So if, say, a new roundabout has been built and is not into the car's GPS data, I'm pretty sure that it's not going to slow down for you... Also, the lack of audible cues is quite disturbing. Have you combed through the settings and found whether you could get such cues? Having to look back and forth between the instrument cluster and the road doesn't strike me as exactly safe :p

No, it's not better than Tesla Autopilot. The turns were fairly benign throughout the video with several lane keeping failures and drop outs. The user interface looks elementary; rather static and no representations of surrounding cars, bicycles, or pedestrians, and no audibles. No lane changing was evident. I did like the slow down ahead of a speed limit change.

What I’ve experienced with my 2017 Audi S3 with Lane assist and adaptive cruise control and as well in our 2018 VW Polo with adaptive cruise control, is the if you come around a curve (without a car in front) and after the curve there’s a traffic stop, or a red light, with cars waiting (standing still); then the adaptive cruise control will ignore the cars waiting or filter them out, as parked cars, and the car will NOT stop behind the cars waiting, it will instead continue to drive (into them). Any chance you could test how the adaptive cruise control in the eTron handles this situation?

Thanks for the nice video. The fact that the Etron is bouncing between the left and right line and that it does not detect any lines if the distance between the lines is too big, clearly shows that Tesla is much more advanced. Yes, the Etron has more asistants, but these are all small things that Tesla can deliver with a software update. The fact that Teslas Autopilot also works when there are no lines on the road clearly shows that Tesla is leading.

Absolutely, and I don't think any sane person would dispute that Tesla is leading in the tech department, by a wide margin. But closing that gap is only a matter of time, and for some of us, we want to drive a plush and expensive-feeling car with useful tech, rather than a maxxed out bleeding edge computer system with wheels and an ignorable driving experience. Plenty of reasonable and good people feel the opposite. Horses for courses!

All the new Audi models (2019 onwards) have this capability not just the E-Tron versions. It's a great system but as you mention it's a capable 'assist' not an autonomous piloting system. Yet the Tesla doesn't have that capability on UK roads either. I think what you are saying is that the Audi system is more capable driving system. The Teslas use Lidar, whereas Audi uses Lidar but mostly forward looking array of sensors and cameras. Hence why this Audi system is better on a 'follow' approach, rather than open road.... and loses the white lines.
