Nice summary good to see the shtats. The etron GT is similar to the etron SUVs in respect to the air suspension. It lowers the ride height in efficiency (and then likely lowers it some more at cruising speed). This will also be benefiting the efficiency as well as the motor decoupling.

My Taycan 4S is more efficient in Range mode, but the rear wheel does start showing up if I put the accelerator pedal down (even slowly). Key is battery temperature. PS you can set the range mode up to 80 MPH if you want to.

Very informative, Bjorn. I'm wondering if it's now time for the Google Sheet to identify FWD, RWD (with or without traction control) and AWD in a column/cell against each car so that it clarifies the understanding of efficiency against how many motors are running and how the power is being used. It will help those looking for a specific drive train in making an informed decision. For example, someone from a snow belt country may want an AWD EV, and this will assist with focussing decision making.

Good news: Tesla is maybe paying 13.300€ compensation for slow charging and range cuts of the old 85 Model S from 2013-2015. Millennium Falcon is paying for itself then.

Do the 1000 km challenge in efficiency mode to make it better comparable to teslas. It really doesn't matter for a consistent drive how much power you do not use cruising at 120 km/h. If you suddenly need high power in efficiency mode i am sure kick down will do the job :).

I just don't get it. I'd want the car to start in efficiency mode, then swap to performance whenever I press the non-efficiency pedal hard. I don't want to mess about with menus when I have a pedal for that

2 years later but: it might be a problem starting in efficiency mode bc it physically lowers the air suspension and could cause scraping on the nose in parking structures for example.

@@ShadowHolder748 I was being a little silly, I meant that efficiency in an EV should be simply controlled by the accelerator pedal. There are no gears or turbos. Your point about suspension is correct. Modes for suspension does make total sense. Just not for power

I do drive 2019 M3P w/o HVAC now that is warm outside and it does save about 30Wh per km in city driving which to me is pretty major saving since I only have public, paid chargers where I live. I also plan a road trip to Russia where on 800km route there is only one 7kw AC charger... So I'll def run without HVAC haha So I'd say it's still a valid, interesting test case to drive without HVAC (:

It's surprising Audi didn't include an Auto setting that could always use the most efficient motor, considering it does offer Auto on ICE cars. Maybe it's coming with an update later?

Unfortunately you are wrong: just tested Efficiency vs Comfort on 35km Highway at 130km/h. At the end I had 3°C difference between both front and back tyres in *both* modes. It doesn't clutch out the rear in Efficiency mode. Efficency is only bit more efficient bc it *never* shifts in the more torque-y gear in the back, Comfort does that sometimes if you drive fast. Dynamic is *always* in the more torque-y gear in the back, which makes quite a difference.

The biggest saving in efficiency mode comes from the lower suspension setting, efficiency makes the car lower than dynamic or comfort.
@MikaelRyd
@MikaelRyd 3 жыл бұрын
Bjorn seems quite sure that is not the case, but running only one engine instead of two makes the most difference. Same as any car AWD cost more fuel than 2wd.

@@MikaelRyd It literally shows in the lower right corner of the infotainment display that efficiency makes the suspension lower than dynamic or comfort.

@@neitusp8546 Yes I can see that but I mean that lowering the car is not the biggest impact on efficiency. It will contribute a bit, more the higher the speed.

Efficiency mode also seems to default to lowest ride height, while comfort and sport raise it. Maybe the test should be redone with ride heights manually set to same height? Willing to bet most gain in efficiency actually comes from that.
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
Not much gain at 80 and 100 km/h.

@oorcinus 3 жыл бұрын
Bjørn Nyland Ah, got it. Wonder where the efficiency difference comes from then. Both motors are the same type. In theory, for higher, sustained speeds, larger motor should be slightly more efficient (at least that’s what i’d expect). Perhaps the gearbox in the rear eats up the difference?
@MikaelRyd
@MikaelRyd 3 жыл бұрын
@@oorcinus the efficiency difference comes from not running AWD (both engines) but only one engine (fwd in this car). Similar to an ICE car 2wd is more efficient than AWD, and similar to Tesla where the 2wd are mote efficient than AWD.
@oorcinus
@oorcinus 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikaelRyd Well, yes and no. Neither Tesla, nor most other EVs uses both motors all the time. The front motor is powered only when accelerating beyond a certain threshold / required torque, and when cornering, and front ESP is required. For normal highway driving, you'll see the front motor work *very* rarely.
@oorcinus
@oorcinus 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikaelRyd Either way, you seem to have missed part of my comment. The question was not why 2WD is more efficient than 4WD. It was why *front*, smaller motor is used for 2WD instead of the rear, larger one, which works most of the time in 4WD mode.
