This e-tron 55 quattro Launch Edition is Audi's big competitor to chonky EV rivals like the Tesla Model X, Jaguar I-PACE and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Whilst technically related to the RS e-tron GT, the similarities are in name alone, really. So here's Top Gear Magazine's Ollie Kew to show us what this slice-of-sensible has to offer...

@@algee1983 So true. The people pining for 'Old Top Gear' need to be educated: Clarkson and Wilman sold their stake in Top Gear to the BBC in 2012 when they signed a three year deal. You don't get rid of shares that are doing well, do you? They also knew there wouldn't be a new contract in 2015, hence the story about Clarkson hitting someone because of a steak. It saved face for Clarkson and co. As we've seen with The Grand Tour, people are bored of those three. That's why Clarkson ripped off Harry Metcalfe and did a farming show.

My understanding is that all the different modes tunes the suspension. A stiffer suspension likely makes it "sportier" even if the throttle curve is the same.

But still, it's pretty expensive.. It could've been the perfect entry model for all the SUV soccermoms, but the price i think will be too high to be seeing these cars everywhere. Then again, maybe i won't even distinguish them from regular Audi's.

@@snakeeyes9246 Indeed. I thought i had replied earlier to Michael, but i guess i forgot to press the button, but yeah that one does look like the perfect entry-level E-SUV. Since i posted that comment, i focused more on any Audi's i'm seeing on the road here in Holland, and actually, the Audi e-tron itself has been popular, this is a quote from the e-tron wiki page: "In the Netherlands, the e-tron was the #2 most registered car of any kind in December 2019". Then also the Q3 and Q4 seem to be pretty popular as well, so i will be expecting to see the Q4 E-tron a lot.

Whilst I'm so NOT a fan of over-sized, over-weight, under-efficient SUVs - Audi or otherwise - I have to 'doff' my hat to Audi for the way the e-Tron charges. Unlike most other EVs - where their published "maximum charge kW speed" is really only achievable when the battery is below 10% full, then the charge speed the battery management system will accept (in order to protect the longevity of the battery cells) gradually decreases - the e-Tron can hold its 150kW charge speed right up to around 80% full, only then slowing down for the last 20%, should you need to fully replenish the battery. This makes ALL the difference when doing the EV charging equivalent of a "splash & dash" pit stop. I really hope all other manufacturers get their act together and reproduce Audi's charging profile.

Replacing door mirrors with cameras and screens is crazy. Tech for techs sake. The wind resistance argument makes no sense on a massive heavy SUV, especially on British roads. Most of the time we are going so slow that drag is negligible. And everybody that has tried these cameras says they simply do not work. You can't move your head in relation to the cameras and change the view like you can with a mirror. What next...square wheels?

Tesla's Supercharger network is, undoubtedly, a major draw in choosing a Tesla EV model over any other current EV manufacturer... But, I would argue your "train crash" description is a tad pessimistic... so long as you're not a company rep piling up the miles day-in, day-out. I've been running an EV now for 18 months and, apart from the very rare longer journeys I've done, I'd say 99% of my charging has been done at home - costing around 4p per mile, too, slashing my 'fuel' bill by over £1100 a year.

@@jonathantaylor1998 Sounds good. But you are fortunate in having off road parking I presume (unlike 45% of UK population say the government). As a local runabout EVs seem to be OK, but from time to time most of us need to do a really long run. From vlogs and friends with non Teslas it's a lottery out there. At the weekend I heard one, on a 300 mile round trip had the car 'restricted' to 50 mph to get them home due to charger unavailability.

Very informative Review! Electric cars are the Future. Particularly Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles. But, I am going to miss the Sound of inline 5, V6, and V8 engines. South Africa doesn't quite have in Infrastructure yet, which is a bit bitter sweet, really.

Just sold mine back to Audi. Was a nice vehicle and good daily driver, but nothing all that outstanding and the limited range caused me to not consider drives outside of my home metro as I just don't trust that the charging network in rural areas either have available ports OR are in service. Too many times I would park at a charging station (ChargePoint, EVGo, etc) and it would be out of service. Thankfully the used car market is strong...Audi took my lease back for what my current payoff was. I took a Uber down the street and purchased a PHEV.

GO AUDI! An Electric Car with a NORMAL interior, not the cheap, minimalistic crap Tesla and BMW are putting out... and this is coming from an avid BMW Fan!! I kind of like the video mirrors, but would like to see them molded into the door instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. I like how it feels like a modern luxury car vs. a so called "futuristic / minimalistic" design which is really a poor excuse for cutting cost. I've been interested in Electric for years, but cars like the Tesla's, BMW's etc have driven me back to petrol. Today, I'm saving my pennies for my 3rd BMW, specifically an M8, but if BMW took the existing petrol M8 and gave me an electric variant that looked identical inside and out, I'd be jumping on the band wagon in an instant. Many complain about EV range, well in Denver Colorado, most peoples' commute fall within the range of any existing EV car like the Audi. If you live in the states and plan on going on road-trips, you'll always have to keep a petrol car in the garage for the foreseeable future, but this makes a great commuter car to get around town and tow the kids to soccer practice. :)
