Audi Q5 2020 review

Tom, I just want to say that I literally ordered this vehicle last week on the back of this review. I love this car and I don't think that an SUV has dated so gracefully than this model. They really got it right with the Q5 and even when the new model arrives later this year or next I think this iteration will still look good. Thank you for all your insights. PS I ended up receiving 5 years factory warranty and 5 years of free servicing.

This gen Audi interior is my absolute favourite! Basically zero gloss black, touch screen plus touchpad (in the a5 anyway) and really nice physical a/c controls. Love the video too Tom!

Agreed, this interior generation is very attractive. I think adding touch capacity is generally a good thing, but I wish Audi had followed BMW into offering both touch and a rotary controller.

Do you mind throwing a large (empty) suitcase in the boot so we can get an idea of the size of the boot? I know some times you use random things to show the boot space. Keep up the good work, the review format/editing is excellent.

You're right, we've got a bit lazy on this and I'll look at what we can do. Can't say the change will take effect immediately due to our big backlog, but you can expect a difference in future.

I don’t like touch only controls. Nothing wrong with a dial to get hold of while driving.

The XC60 is an excellent vehicle. The availability of a plug-in hybrid is also attractive for those who have household solar here in New South Wales.

The Volvo brand will disappear when the Chinese owner merge their Geely brand and Volvo. So the resale value won't be great.

Great review Tom I know I’m outside the trend but A6 Avant 40TDI would be my preference if we got it here as it looks ace - see @andrewchapple aka as Volkswizard driving it at launch with Audi designer - in saying that Q5 probably my favourite crossover

Would also prefer the A6 Avant, Andrew - unfortunately it isn’t coming down under, though Audi will launch the A6 Allroad in 45 TDI guise only soon. The downside is that it’s basically $25,000 AUD more than an equivalent Q5, meaning it will continue to be a niche low volume seller confined to those with great taste!

another great review Tom and one I was hoping for. this is one of the short listed cars for us next year but we are still leaning toward the X3 4 cylinder petrol. in your opinion, which is the better of the two? no pressure 😊

Thanks, Dave! For me, the X3 30i just pips it, but if you buy an X3 it MUST have the adaptive dampers. The non-adaptive ride isn’t great.

20i isn’t really enough engine for a car of this size. Go the Q5 45 TFSI if you’re looking at two cars at the same price.

Another great review Tom. One question....worth the bigger bikkies over a 162 Tiguan with the R/Line? Looking seriously at the upgraded MY21 Tiguan when it hits, and like VW Groups cars.

Thanks, David. I think it depends on the upgrades we see to the Tiguan. I'm looking for some upgraded interior materials and a bump in power for the top engine option, either to 169kW or 180kW. If that happens, personally, I'd just go the Tiguan R-Line, which continues to be very good. The exception is if you did a lot of country driving and could get the benefit from one of the V6 engines, the Q5 50 TDI or SQ5 come into their own.

Chasing Cars thanks mate. Yes country based with a view to some touring. Refuse to be drawn into the Prado / 200 series club when my 90% of driving dictates otherwise.

@@chasingcars Tom, I think the current 162Kw engine in the top-spec Tiguan is more than enough. The Tiguan is a magnificent car and an absolute bargain compared to the Q5. Same family with more warranty and superior value retention.

While Audi Q5 has been a best selling when it was released the interior does not look good as X3 from my eyes. My vote will go to X3.

The electric blue one was the SQ5 with the 3.0L V6 - about 25 grand more expensive. The A35 went into a comparison a month or two ago, but this week’s upload is a more detailed standalone review.

Semi related to this car but also just cause you know your stuff. I want the most quiet, comfortable small SUV under $100k. I don’t care about sporting credentials, but looking a bit good is obviously helpful too. What would you recommend? I’ve thought about the Q3, Q5, X1/3... Q3 is my favourite looking, but because it’s their ‘cheaper’ option it’s generally less well insulated from road and wind noise than the Q5 for example... but I’m in the minority and like the newer Audi interiors. I’m crippled with indecision.

I’d go a Volvo V60 Cross Country or XC60 on adaptive dampers with your criteria. Avoid the fixed suspension options.

If you go for a Q5, make sure you spec with acoustic glazing. I have a Q5 40TDI with acoustic pack and the difference when compared to the loaner Q5 I got during my last service was marked. Tyres also make quite a difference. BMW spec most of their cars with run-flats which can be noisy.

All being paid by Audi USC I have an Audi Q5 I just used it for six months engine problem everywhere I went they said there’s cars all have engine problem God bless you be careful do not spend your money because you’re gonna be in the Mechanic shop very often and it’s so expensive
