The skier, carving his way down the streets of San Francisco at high speed. The race quattros and the Q7 driving across sheets of ice, spectacularly being shot from below. The snow-covered ski jump that the Audi 100 CS quattro® drives up without any external assistance - over quattro's 30-year history Audi has made a whole series of TV commercials that highlight the mystique of quattro® and the emotions it arouses. My father had one. We called it “The Elderly People’s Rocket” with its magnificent sounding 5-cylinder engine. But honestly, it isn’t the best looking if you compare it with its competitors (Mercedes, BMW…)

The chain is just there for safety.. I mean its a 35 degree incline with a 50 foot drop at the bottom.. Once at the top, the car and the driver have to get down.. AND if the the car slipped just a little, the car would never stop and fly off the end wrecking the car and killing the driver. Audi isnt dumb. They made a great car, a great commercial and did it with safety in mind.

Yes, the cable was only to lower the Audi Quatro back down to the bottom. The car was lifted up, and back off, the ski flying jump ramp by a crane. Other than extreme studded snow tires and special low gear axle ratios, the all wheel drive Audio Quatro 100cs used was a production Audi.

If you think the cable hooked to the car is for towing it up the slope you're wrong. Once the car reaches the maximum gradient it can climb and the wheels stop turning, it'd start sliding down uncontrollably, so the cable locks the car in place.

They are reliable - I drive one everyday - Audi 100 2.3E from 1988. For me it's much better car than comparable Mercedes W124 or BMW E34 - simpler construction (front wheels drive, suspension), no corrosion problems, cheaper parts and higher fuel economy (petrol cars). It's not desired by car collectors because of less prestigious/historical brand image. If you are not afraid to maintain it properly it will last for next 30 years.

+Alexander Fattoum I was talking about how they managed to get the audi on the ski jump, not on top of ski jump. As far as I know you cant go from ground level to end of ski jump by a car, because end of ski jump is higher placed than ground. Why do I even bother explaining.

I don't know if you found out, but they used a crane to lift it onto the bottom of the jump. There is a documentary that shows what they did. The helicopter was used for filming. There is a track used to keep the car in line, and a cable with one-way stopping mechanism to keep the car from sliding back when it stops. In those days this was likely the only production car capable of this.
