I feel like a side effect of your engine running properly is a shaking oil cap at idle. It's when your idling and your oil cap is vacuumed to your valve cover that you have a pcv issue. I've worked on many 1.8t engines over the years and they have always operated this way. Then again, im not a professional but it's something I've noticed over the years. Btw, awesome videos Chris!

Thanks mate that's good to know but connected to the inlet there should be some vacuum as thats a constant vacuum source ?
@kennyfontaine4762 Жыл бұрын
@Car Chris Yeah, I think you should have vacuum at the tip or at least on one end of the hockey puck i think. The hockey puck acts as a pvc sort of from what I gather. For instance, if you have both the pcv and the hockey puck removed from your engine, the oil cap ( or in your case cardboard) "should" vacuum to your rocker cover which is a bad thing lol. In the end I think you're fine just running the hockey puck without the pvc. But like I said I'm not professional I just work on my own vehicles and notice things like this one I a while. I wouldn't wanna be responsible if you blew up you're beautiful TT

Can tell you paid alot of attention in the group and did your own research :D brilliant video mate.. only thing I'd say is that as you explained the turbo will only pull vacuum when it's spooling.. as I always drive with my guage on.. even when your driving at anything less than 15% throttle (low load driving) anything under boost will still give the negative pressure in the inlet :) which still as you know removes the blow by pressure..

Great video mate. I have seen some interesting things about the whole oil catch cans and oil vapours. The catch cans can actually add resistance which then allows a slight increase in pressure. Why not try your PCV without the catch can (just as a test)? Also the oil vapours are more of a problem with direct injection engines. No catch can would just mean cleaning the intake manifold as part of the service.
@chriswray2132 Жыл бұрын
what is the long term effect of just leaving this as it is ? i have a catch can to fit for over 6 months now, i suspect its gonna stay there in its box
@jules13692 Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, great video, I'm thinking the pcv should be in the original place to suck idle pressure (small vacuum created by inlet manifold), and when you start revving, the turbo kicks in and will create a bigger sucking force and redirect blow-off through catch can? being bigger diameter than the inlet nipple...my 2 cents, just thinking out loud. On ttforum some guys say that you need the pcv even if you got a catch-can, to help oil drain in turbo oil return line, and probably to avoid damaging the valve seals. I guess the muck wil get into the PCV. some of it, but most blow-by will get to catch-can on high revs. How did you solve it since this video?

I'm not sure how reliable this test of positive pressure or vacuum at the oil filler hole is. The oil pump itself is surely going to always be creating a lot of positive pressure in there. Ive run my 1.8t without pcv for years. But I'm going to put it back in. Having a boost gauge now has made me notice how the inlet is under vacuum most of the time in a daily driver.

01:23 Mate, i think you could have wrong understanding of the "Pancake-valve". It's function is to restrict the flow to the inlet pipe when needed. What I am trying to say is that the valve is always open
@CarChris82 Жыл бұрын
The valve is open on idle and closed under load which restricts the flow to the inlet mani and then turbo intake pipe pulls the pressure through
@TTAutowerks94 Жыл бұрын
I'd be Interested to see I'd it made a difference when you remove the oil cap spacer. I'm pretty sure that doesn't actually have a seal mate.. so would cause a slight vac leak on cam cover which would void any wanted vacuum at the cap.. regardless, you now know that the blow by gasses are being pulled instead of building .. getting recycled just as ever ICE is designed to do.. but with a catch can inline :) cleaner and simpler good job mate

@CarChris82 Жыл бұрын
Do you mean the vacuum pipes under the manifold?
@Biffabacon68 Жыл бұрын
Surely the non return valve needs to go from rocker to the t piece before it joins pipe to catch can 🤷🏻♂️ thus preventing pressure going in but letting vacuum out
@CarChris82 Жыл бұрын
The valve work from vacuum from the inlet manifold and if its fitted before the can it will put the nasty oil fumes back into the inlet without being filtered out by the can so would defeat the purpose or the catch can
@Biffabacon68 Жыл бұрын
Right I see 👍🏻 but also where you’ve put the valve your still getting pressure to the can and through the t piece to rocker ? Is the t piece to the catch can pipe clean air return or dirty air pre cycle
@Biffabacon68 Жыл бұрын
To stop pressure getting to the rocker it needs a no entry back into the rocker on that t so don’t know how you can overcome that if that’s the dirty air pipe to catch can
@CarChris82 Жыл бұрын
@@Biffabacon68 everything before the can is dirty air which is pulled through the catch can by vacuum from the inlet manifold pcv valve and turbo intake pipe so only clean air is put back into the engine intake
@Biffabacon68 Жыл бұрын
If you put a non return on that small t piece pipe from rocker fumes can’t get in but can get out to main catch can pipe thus not defeating the whole purpose of the catch can
@busker_boy_c2845 Жыл бұрын
What if you swapped the valve round ? Would that do anything put it on backwards
@CarChris82 Жыл бұрын
Then no vacuum would get pulled by the inlet manifold and so would be the same as not having one at all
@benjames6929 Жыл бұрын
I think, maybe, the valve is in the wrong place. The engine, at idle is making vacuum and pressure, hence the cardboard. Pressure is being vented from the head, into, the T piece, into catch can, then to Puck which then deposits it back to the intake system. Would The pcv valve have to replace the current T piec that splits to the head vent on route into the tank. That way it couldn't draw anything back
@CarChris82 Жыл бұрын
Could be but where it is placed is after the catch can which is what you want if its before the can then no point having a can as it would be just pulling it all back through the inlet before being cleaned by the can it that makes sense
