I love that this book is inspired by his son! Bill Bryson is by far one of my favorite writers, so much so that years ago I was inspired to name my son Bryson after him!

The only thing better than reading a book by Bill Bryson, is having Bill Bryson read the book to you, it makes all the difference

Met Mr. Bryson on a Cunard cruise (my first) on Queen Elizabeth in 2014. I was already a huge fan, and he was disarmingly nice. I was there as the comedy juggler, and he was the Celebrity Lecturer. He came to my show and was very complimentary about it, for which I am still grateful:)

Bill Bryson is a global treasure! His book brought tears to my eyes especially as he thoughtfully acknowledged the often death-defying hardships of numerous heroes of science and medicine, as well as a couple real scoundrels. I can’t wait to read more of his works!

I wish he would have commented about Chapter 20 which is about viruses. Such a fascinating considering what we are going through and prescient in so many ways.

I have almost finished this book and had to stop to write this or I would have put it away and not finished it. It is full of information some of which I have been suspect of but have no basis so have read on. Until I got to this "for every 400 middle-aged Americans who die each year "Just" 220 die in Australia"...That is such a skewed statistic especially considering the point he is trying to make regarding it. The population of America is over 327 million the population of Australia is under 25 million (Which is less than the state of California) that means 400 is 0.000001% of Americans and 220 is 0.000009% of Australians that's Nine times more percentage wise. This is just one of the many numbers where he Compares America to tiny Nations to try to make us look bad. Like comparing American car deaths to European countries which gets even more skewed. 273 million cars in America with $3 gas compared to 37 million in Italy with $6 gas, of course there's going to be a vast difference And that's a big European country carwise... I won't even get into the motivation behind this the Right people already know and the wrong don't.

Clutch Carabelli not really the point. The statistics he puts out are based on proportions, so the overall population or number of cars doesn’t matter. If it had been “in America 2 million die from car deaths, but in Sweden only 1 million die” that would have been skewed.

@@alexanderscrutton4930 "the statistics he put out are based on proportion so the overall population or number of cars doesn't matter".... is that your final answer LOL it is impossible to compare proportion without overall population and numbers. That is the point which you would understand if you read what I wrote and were able to comprehend it. But after stringing together the words in a sentence that you just did I will not be wasting anymore time with you

@@clutchcarabelli8054 with all due respect, you're missing the point Mr Bryson is trying to make entirely. The 400 is not to be compared to the 327 million, just as the 220 is not to be compared to the 25 million. It is a ratio of 400:220. Akin to the sentence two before the one in question, it illustrates that a randomly selected American aged between 45-54 is almost twice as likely to die, from any cause, as a randomly selected Australian from the same demographic. That is my final answer.
