George is shocked by his wife’s newfound confidence and charm, stirring feelings of jealousy. Within days, George and Maria reconcile, but Maria has also developed feelings for Claude. However, Claude, in a heartfelt confession, reveals his past as a gigolo and ends their affair, promising to reform. This confession, orchestrated by Pyne, ensures Maria’s lasting happiness. Satisfied with the outcome, Pyne considers the marriage saved-while also making a tidy profit. I find it interesting that Mrs. Christie used the name of her husband’s mistress for the name of Mr. Packington’s mistress.
