At the end of the day, if you don’t have an LP60, get this instead, if you do - I wouldn’t rush out to upgrade to this unless you want that VM95 cart. Great turntable though.

the LP60, and all it's clones and siblings look and feel a bit cheap so it would be nice to go with something like the lp70. No real complaints about the lp60 sound quality though, just that the belts seem to stretch far to fast for me. Always keep the cue lever up when powering up an automatic turntable like this for the first time, that way nothing bad can happen.

One drawback is that you now have to open the dust cover to operate the controls, whereas the LP60X had them on the front. I know the conventional wisdom is that it's best to leave the cover open while playing a record, but as I proved a while back, that is actually false, and it's best to close the cover while playing. And FYI, at 13:00 you can see the counterbalance spring. So just like the LP60X, it uses a spring instead of a counterweight.
@JuvyThaKid

Why should you close the lid while playing a record? Other than keeping dust off while it plays. Pretty new to this and love to get as much info as I can!

Just want to make something clear opening ANY PRODUCT under US law DOES NOT void the warranty. As for those warranty void stickers some manufacturers put on the product those are technically illegal according to the FTC and will not void the warranty if removed. The only way a manufacturer can void your warranty is if they can prove you damaged something when you opened it.

A great addition by Audio Technica. So much better than the Lp60. I love that you can change the Cartridge and that you can ensure you can keep the Tonearm in place with the clip. The clip may be plastic but serves it's purpose. I suspect the reason there is no slot to put a 45 adaptor in is that the idea is that the Turntable resembles something closer to a regular Turntable. When I got my first cheap Turntable as a teenager, Turntables did not have a slot as there was no requirement.

Correction: The LP70X tonearm is spring-counterbalanced just like the LP60X, clearly visible at 12:59. The spring appears stronger and thicker to accommodate the lower 2 gram VTF. I think the thickness might also explain the VTF accuracy, not even .1 of a gram off!

I have what I believe is a vintage TT. I don’t really know much about it. I bought it used in a pawn shop. It’s an A/T LP120. It’s direct drive, big and heavy. I’ve seen a modern version of it selling for around $300-$350 (used). It seems like a much more complex unit than the LP 70X that you reviewed here. That having been said, the LP 70 looks like a unit that at least represents forward movement, technologically. And obviously it specs out really well. The only concern I have, is how long it would last under normal, careful use. But that’s just me. I want things to last forever. But at the price point I’d say it’ll probably last long enough.
@Recordology
@Recordology 3 ай бұрын
Sounds like you have the original LP120. A good solid TT! It was released in 2009. Some people said it had some motor noise and the preamp was filtering audio even when bypassed. So there was this big movement where people were surgically removing the built in preamp. I think a lot of that was inflated. Overall the turntable became legendary and quite popular. Around 2017-18 they released the LP-120X which had lower motor noise and a fully bypassable preamp, but sacrificed the nice metal 45 adapter and the VTA adjustment. You have a solid unit!

Now this is a very interesting product, perfect for someone who wants to use better styluses with no hassle. With LP60 there is better styluses available but only from third parties like LPgear. I recommend buying the ML stylus because it the bang for the buck, maximum detail, minimal distortion, longest lifespan maybe even 1000hours(better sound longer lifespan win win) reads old records so deep it is basically virgin territory Tracks like a champ. Only thing is that it is picky about VTA and azimuth. But that should not be a problem because everything is all set. This player really looks one of the best entry level products out there now.

At about 12:59 of your video where you are showing the record size selector, There appears to be a coil spring attached to the base and the tonearm. That seems to be how the tonearm tracking force is set to 2 grams. BSR used this method back in the 60's

I appreciate the sound of vinyl records but I don't really enjoy swapping out cartridges, mounting them, aligning them, setting tracking force, and setting anti-skate. The older I get the worse my vision gets and the fatter my fingers become. Do I have the cartridge aligned properly? Which protractor should I use? P-Mounts are some of my favorite tables for this reason. While I'd love to see p-mounts make a comeback, this scratches that itch a bit. God grant me the strength to not purchase another turntable I really don't need.

Just get one cartridge and set it and leave it! In getting the best out of LPs, you should have the ability to "self adjust" if not you could probably encounter "record wear" which doesn't happen with a properly adjusted system! Your age shouldn't have anything to do with setting settings!

The new model seems to have very little platter wobble too! Regarding the 45 adaptor not having a place to live: if you've got a 'now playing' stand you could always put it onto that; face down, so it won't slip off, perhaps? The only slight flaw I can see with this turntable is the size selector. Firstly, what happens if you have a 10 inch record? The size selector switch should have a middle choice for these, even though they are not very often played, when compared with 7 inch and 12 inch records. Secondly, it seems easy to forget to change this and have it miss the record completely if you have the 12 inch size selected and you try to play a 7 inch record. Unless, the selected speed also plays a part in this; though this will negate how to play a 7 inch at 33 and a 12 inch at 45!

It’s a No-Brainer in my opinion. If you purchase from DaCapo Audio, a little shop located in Denmark that I’ve bought from several times, you can save some money. Just do a search and compare prices with DaCapo vs etailers here in the States. I’m in Hawaii and I’ve gotten my orders from DaCapo inside a week. It appears the biggest difference between the 60 and the 70 is its a little more up to date styling. It looks a bit more higher end. The width is slimmer on the 60, so maybe if you have a slimmer space, the 60 would be a better option. What is up with manufacturers lately designing their turntables with no 45 adapter hole? Kind of annoys me too.

Actually, you can safely play a record with as much as 6g VTF, so long as your cartridge is properly aligned. Do I recommend it? NO! But a record can withstand those tolerances. In earlier days cartridges & styli were designed for heavier tracking forces. For example, look up the specs on some of the old Pickering & Stanton cartridges.

You can disable the auto return without opening up the turntable. Super easy to do, and it's a completely reversible tweak. It will disable all automatic functions though. It's helpful if you want to play a record that trips auto-return before it's done playing. I have four or five like that in my collection. Lift the platter. Take the screw out of the center of the big gear and lift it off the pivot. Do NOT remove the little lever from the gear. Set the gear aside, and reinstall the platter. Voila, fully manual. CAVEAT: DO NOT USE THE START/STOP BUTTONS. The turntable will start running when you swing the arm over the record, and will shut off when returned to its rest, just lke most fully-manual 'tables. If you accidentally push the start button, the turntable will not turn off. You'll have to unplug it and re-install the gear to reset it. To restore the automatic features, just put the gear back where it belongs, start the turntable, and allow it to cycle. Back to factory spec, just like that.

Is speed adjustment the same as LP60? Do you go under the device with a screwdriver?

Yes exactly the same

Attractive TT & certainly a step up on the LP60 with a nicer tone arm & upgradable cart, the price in Australia makes it a somewhat silly option though if you can find a deal on an LP3 for very little more & even cheaper 2nd hand obviously.

very good cart for the price, i use on my lp-3 and its a lot better than my old 3600.

The 3600 is a hidden gem and really under rated IMO. You can upgrade the stylus on these. I did the RigB mod on mine and upgraded the stock stylus with an Analogis, Nude Elliptical, Synthetic Black Diamond. You can look up the RigB mod and Analogis stylus by doing a search. I basically took a $25.00 cartridge and modified it to sound like a $300.00 cart. for less than a hundred dollars. I’d say it sounds just as good as an Ortofon 2M Blue, but at a fraction of the cost. I learned something plus I had fun tweaking it. 😎

Agreed! If it cost more - it would be more popular lol!

I bought the LP70XBT as a replacement for my very old Rotel RP1010. I love it. But am I correct in noticing there is no on/off switch? The only way to turn it on or off is to plug in the power at the back. This is a pain. I don't want it permanently switched on.
@Recordology
@Recordology Ай бұрын
That is correct! When I started getting back into vinyl, I was concerned about the exact same thing… It’s a fairly popular design these days. The good news is it will not pull much / any voltage unless the motor is engaged or the preamp is on.

Spring controlled tracking force? looks to be a spring at rear of tone arm. But that's fine.

1:28 - The ATN91 is an upgrade for the AT3600L, but you have to be able to change the weight from 3,5 to 2,5 - not sure if the turntable you talk aout is able to do that.

A lovely unit. I just have one question. The automatic operation obviously won't work with a 10" record? Other than that I would rate it highly for a beginner's turntable.
@Recordology
@Recordology 3 ай бұрын
For 10" records you manually cue it and then it will auto return.
@johnmarchington3146
@johnmarchington3146 3 ай бұрын
@@Recordology Yes, I realise they could be manually cued, but a person with a not-so-steady hand might have appreciated being able to do it automatically. I'd say it's still an excellent turntable.

You always state that a cork platter mat is an upgrade to a felt platter mat. I’ve tried both on my LP12 and the felt is far superior in sound quality to the cork.
@chrishill245
@chrishill245 Ай бұрын
Do you find the felt to have more static though? I have the LP60 and plan on buying this 70, but I think I'd like to replace the mat if I can find something else in the right thickness. The mat on my 60 is really stactic.
