➡️➡️Learn more about Rupert Neve here: producelikeapro.com/blog/audi...
From his earliest memories, Rupert has always had a love for music and for electronics. These two passions, and a dedication to creating the most musically beneficial audio paths turned him into the third person ever to receive a technical achievement GRAMMY Award, the man Dave Grohl has referred to as “The Einstein of mixing consoles”, and the “Audio Person of the Century” from Studio Sound Magazine in 1999 (ahead of George Martin and Ray Dolby).
With 80+ years of design experience, Rupert’s story spans the globe: from growing up building radios in Argentina before WWII, to creating the very first “modern” recording consoles in England, to elevating analogue circuit design for the digital world in Texas.
Rupert first gained audio design and manufacturing experience with Rediffusion, Ferguson Radio, and as Chief Engineer of a transformer manufacturer.
His first real equipment designs came in the form of CQ Audio, where he created a number of early hi-fi loudspeakers and amplifiers.
While CQ Audio never became a giant, these experiences gave Rupert some of the production and marketing knowledge he would need when founding the Rupert Neve Company.
Rupert’s life as a pioneer of professional audio equipment started as a side job with several one-off custom tube mixers for musicians and studios.
These early designs built his reputation and connections, while also helping him understand the needs of the recording world, which was on the verge of a revolution with the advent of rock-n-roll and multi-track stereo recording.
As a designer, Rupert was an early adopter of transistors which allowed for new possibilities and fewer compromises when compared to tubes. However, where most designers used the transistor as a way to make devices as efficient as possible, removing transformers and opting for class-B amplification, Rupert maintained a design closer to his class-A tube designs with custom transformers, optimized for the lower voltages of the transistors.
The resulting designs featured the size, reliability and noise benefits of transistors while still maintaining a rich, musically beneficial sound without any upper-order harmonic content. Additionally, these circuits were the first widely available units to maintain wide-bandwidth performance out to almost 100kHz.
Very quickly, these new designs became the industry’s premiere choice for both recording and broadcast.
In the 10 years between 1965 and 1975, the Rupert Neve Company went from Rupert assembling mixers in his garage to a worldwide operation with hundreds of employees.
During this time, Rupert helped to create a number of standards affecting how equalizers, compressors, pre-amplifiers, faders, microphones and mixing consoles are used today. The outstanding quality and reliability of these “classic” Rupert Neve designs has allowed them to stay relevant, and there is perhaps no greater testament to this fact than the hundreds of these early consoles that are still in daily, high-level use fifty years later.

Back in the early ‘90’s, I lived in Austin, Texas. A favourite shop there was a very high-end audio recording equipment store that featured many of the top brands. One afternoon, I was sitting in a chair with a hot coffee and a very distinguished gentleman sat down beside me. I did not recognize him until he introduced himself as Rupert. Of course, my excitement rose considerably and then spent the next hour with one of the 20th Century’s foremost geniuses. His intellect and warm nature were rather overwhelming and the experience was truly a hi-light of my Life! God speed, Mr. Neve. A truly remarkable man!

I recently watched "Sound City" a documentary by Dave Grohl about the legendary studio which in a way centers around their historic Neve 8028 console. Highly recommend it for anyone who missed it. It was a fantastic watch covering some incredible rock and roll history that took place at that studio including the formation of Fleetwood Mac and the recording of their debut album, Rumors (a sonic masterpiece imho) and many other amazing albums. The neve console takes center stage in the last part of the film when Dave records an album on it with some of his amazing friends. ;)

Back in the 80s, “when I worra lad”, I worked for local radio. They were using the Bcm10 desk. That picture brought back some happy memories of when I was first introduced to a desk, with all those buttons and knobs and Vu meters. Then I was educated on a guy called Rupert Neve who invented the desk. I was shown all sorts of tricks it could do, I still have the reel to reel tapes of the mixes I made, adding all sorts of effects which sounded amazing but were relatively simple to achieve.

What a beautiful and loving tribute to a man that was as you said the most influential designer in the professional audio industry. His genius designs hopefully will last for a long time. Sadly units such as the 1073 etc. had components and transformers that although can be substituted to very close specs of the original are not exact matches. At one point discrete components will become very rare if not non existent so hold on to any NEVE units you may have (clones or original). As a member of the DIY community I decided to do a 1084 circuit into 1 PCB. I used as close to original components and in the end the unit sounded glorious. The fact that the circuit still sounds that good even with substituted parts (albeit almost same specs) is a testament to his genius. Lastly if one watches or reads any interviews with him one quickly realizes above all what a gentle person he was.

I read that Rupert Neve was designing mixers for the EBU (European Broadcast Union) and wanted a Class-A single ended valve design but couldn't allow valve failure on a live desk so decided to built it with transistors but keep the output transformer. Hence why they run hot and sound amazing! There where two 160 channel Never desks made, they are owned by AiR Studios in London with the second in Montserrat. Interesting to see The Police jumping on the console (but in socks, on flat panels notice) as famously, Oasis where thrown out of AiR for dancing on the desk and spilling beer on it (facepalm).

I did not know his early pre-1960s history... so thank you Warren! Mr. Neve was the man! I've had a pair of the Neve 33122a modules racked by Brent Averill that originally were housed in the BBC! Great sounding! But I still think I like the infamous 1073 and its EQ section is still on the top of my list! Although that said I have not been recording for many years which I am trying to get back to having a place to record as soon as possible as I am not getting any younger... But that said Focusrite was another amazing piece of work! And of course Portico!

Beautiful tribute to Mr Neve. Never met the great man but my mates brother Nick Franks used to run a company in Salford Greater Manchester call Amek and I fondly remember the Amek 9098 eq. 9/10 studios in Manchester had this eq.

What a lovely tribute to such an important man. tbh I've never liked the sound 1073's make. not my taste. really really like the focusrite desk bx has made though. such gorgeously clear EQ. Also, turning the THD screw up 100% and then putting the master fader to 100% and then trimming the gain after that adds a really lovely low end to whatever you throw at it, without even using the EQ or compressor in the channel's signal. So I love overall that Mr Neve has something for everyone: warm, fluffy retro vibes, all the way to clean, shimmering, crystal clear stuff with early focusrite
