The "Boss" dance practice was my first exposure to NCT, and I fell for Taeyong's charisma right away. To this day, he is still my ult bias in all of Kpop; the more I know him, the more it's solidified. He's an incredible artist and human being, so I'll talk more about him if you don't mind. Btw, Taeyong and Ten have two other songs together "Call D" (must see live stage from NCT Nation concert) and "Swipe." If you want to hear more of Taeyong's singing voice, I'll suggest his "Moon Tour" and for his dancing, watch his "Ghost" performance video. Taeyong wrote both of these songs, of course. He also wrote the original version of "Yestoday" and his lyrics for "My Van” and “Baby Don't Stop," which has clever art references. Taeyong often starts songs because his official positions in the group are leader, main rapper, main dancer, sub-vocalist, center, visual, and face of the group. He also sometimes choreographs and often adds to or changes choreo. He is also known as an idea bank and makes many suggestions even for MVs. For example, swinging on the chandelier in "Make a Wish" was his idea. Anyway, thank you so much, and I'll look forward to your future NCT and Taeyong reactions!

Yestoday is probably one of the most personal songs they have to this day. Really need to look up the lyrics to appreciate the song. Taeyong reflects on his past struggles, and wrote it with Doyoung’s vocals in mind. Mark then added his own verse.

This is gonna be a monster comment (and unfortunately inexhaustive cause i got tired), sorry 😭but i love my boys and i love talking about them Taeyong and Ten have two more songs together: Call D from the Golden Age album and Swipe from the Street Woman Fighter 2 soundtrack. Neither of them have music videos like Baby Don't Stop does, but Call D was performed live at their NCT Nation concert last year. Very good performance, would absolutely recommend it. Taeyong has a lot of self-written songs (he has the most writing credits throughout nct i believe), some of which he's released on Soundcloud, teased on lives or performed at his solo concert earlier this year. Taeyong's kinda like the failsafe of the group in a way, like it's always a good idea to start with him, and a lot of their more "neo" songs have him starting them off, especially 127 (also, he's the center of the group so, lol, guess that pertains to lines too). Black on Black technically only has 5 people singing (Taeyong, Mark and Lucas rap and Jeno and Yuta do the sing-y parts) and it's a good song for what it is (and is also incredible to watch live) but it's not something i really just listen to, yk? There's a version of this song live with Hendery, Yangyang and Xiaojun (the members added to WayV in 2019) getting their own solo parts since they weren't originally in the song. NCT is the largest k-pop group in terms (tripleS being second by only two members), but it borrows its concept from j-pop groups (particular AKB48 if i'm not mistaken) with the constant expansion, sub-units and originally planned graduation concept for NCT Dream. SM has been trying to implement both for years with... well, no degrees of success, when they tried to expand with Super Junior (originally Super Junior 05 since they thought there'd be able to be different ones each year) and Red Velvet, Kyuhyun and Yeri respectively, both members received a lot of hate for "piggybacking" off an already popular group. Super Junior practically invented sub-units in k-pop (and before it was booked and busy Mark, it was overworked Eunhyuk lol) and groups like Shinee and F(x) helped to popularise "noise music" so by the time NCT debuted in 2016, the public was mostly desensitised to sm's activities.

(continuing cause i have way too much to say) Before 2020, there were practically no sole Dream members who were in NCT U units so Jaemin being in Make a Wish was HUGE at the time. There was also this huge political divide between South Korea and China (that is still rampant today) and because of it, WayV couldn't publicly interact with the other members or share the nct name, they even had a different lightstick and fandom name, and it got to the point where people were speculating if WayV was a sub-unit or not (the unit wars were terrible in 2019-2020 because of it) so seeing WayV come together with the other units for Resonance was a big win for ot21 stans who had been fighting for the group. That's also a huge part of why Resonance was as big of an album as it was (double-million selling!!). Despite Boss' major impact on the k-pop industry (which even had companies scrambling to find producers who could recreate something similar), Make a Wish was the first NCT U song to get a major music show win and the first NCT U mv to reach 100 million views!! At the end of the Make a Wish mv, there's a little scene in a train station that's supposed to be a hint for Aespa's debut (which came out like two months after this mv if i'm not wrong), they had a few hints for Aespa's debut all through the latter half of 2020 too. The original From Home mv moved me to goosebumps but the mv for the rearranged version had me in tears. It's already a very emotional song but the scenes they chose to overlay the music on had no reason to be as sad as they were 😭i'd only been stanning for just over a year too and they managed to make me cry (not like it's hard tho lmao). NCT always has to have their vocal flex songs or it just isn't an NCT album. Resonance came out in two parts, with two mv's for each part (Make a Wish-From Home/90s Love-Work It) that both had a member in both unit songs (Doyoung for part 1 and Ten for part 2) with the mvs coming out within a week's time so both units had a single week of promoting together where the member in both units stood in the middle during the interviews. Honestly, I didn't like Work It when it first came out cause it was so... strange after 90s Love so I totally get you, but as time went on I got used to it and it became a fun vibe song to me, the mv being as fun as it is just made it so much better (it also has two of my current faves - Jisung and Hendery - lol) I love Raise the Roof as a song on its own so much, especially the verses (and particularly Hendery's part lmao, I am very biased), you should definitely check out the entire Resonance album fs!

I love Universe but I had it as my alarm for a while so Spotify kept adding it to all my playlists and I quickly got tired of it 😭same with Boss actually, so I had to take a break from them two until I could fall back in love with them. The music video would have been better to watch fs, though I love the dance (their synchronisation regardless of line-up never fails to astound me), so I hope you can check that out soon! One of the teaser pics for the mv had all the members lounging on a couch wearing full-face masks that caused the fandom to turn into sleuths to try and figure out who was who, it was a crazy day in ncity. I am the biggest Beautiful hater, idc, they can never make me like that song, it is just so cringe to me 😭I have listened to it fully once and never again. I don't know anything about it but that I don't like it 😭power to those who do like it tho and ik it's a good full-group song and I am a ballad lover but it simply is not for me On the other hand, I love Golden Age, the way it whips between the calm singing and aggressive raps is just so typically NCT that it's perfect to me. NCT full group songs always have people in states of confusion, though tbf, that is a lot of people to try and make a coherent song around. I love love love Baggy Jeans, and I love how much the members loved it (they have a tendency to not like the demos they're shown but like 4/5 were vibing with Baggy Jeans demo, which is practically unheard of lol) and were so excited to perform together again for the first time in 7 years. I love Baggy Jeans as a song and as an experience, it just means everything to me lol. Pado live is the BIGGEST vibe, the members always have so much fun when they get to sing live, like they will absolutely let you know their mics are on (especially Taeyong, Mark and Doyoung to me). NCT -- which stands for Neo (a pop culture term that means new/original) Culture Technology -- right now as a whole has 5 (6) sub-units -- NCT-U, NCT-127, NCT-Dream, WayV, (DoJaeJung) and NCT-WISH. Therefore, their style is meant to be new and original with elements that embrace different cultures and technologies to create their sound. What you just heard is considered NCT-style, they don't really have a traditional music style that you can attach to them. NCT-U was NCT's first sub-unit, which debuted in April 2016. NCT-U is made up of all the members, so, they just add and subtract members from all the other sub-units depending on the concept for the song. As you can see, NCT-U songs span a wide range of styles and genres and can include anywhere for all 25 members or only 1 or 2 members. The U stands for United, but I also like to think of it as Universal because of the way the group never has a fixed number of members. "Without you" was sung by Taeil (main vocalist, who is no longer part of NCT), Doyoung (main vocal) and Jaehyun (main vocal, sub-rapper and visual), who are members of NCT-127. "Without You" is considered the group's second debut song (sort of the B-side song they promoted with along with "The 7th Sense." -- DoYoung and Jaehyun were both in "The 7th Sense", and this was the debut of new member Taeil) "Without You" was only released a day after "The 7th Sense." Fun fact: If you listen to the Mandarin Chinese version of "Without You" you will see and hear Kun, who will eventually become the leader of WayV, in the MV as a special member. Although, SM didn't consider this his debut. He didn't officially debut until 2018 with NCT-2018 and their song "Black on Black." (Kun was the member who was added to make the group equal 18 members and complete the concept of NCT-2018 having 18 members to mirror the year.) Kun is Chinese so that is why he sung the Chinese version of the song and why he became the leader of WayV. "Boss" has 7 members -- Taeyong (NCT's leader, main rapper and dancer), Doyoung (main vocal), Jaehyun (main vocal, sub-rapper and visual) and Jungwoo (Main vocal) who are members of NCT-127; Mark (Main rapper and dancer), who is a member of NCT-127 and NCT-Dream; WinWin (lead dancer, sub-vocal and sub-rapper) who is a member of NCT-127 and WayV; and Lucas (rapper and visual), who is now a former member of NCT/WayV and is currently an SM solo artist. "Boss" came out in 2018 and this was Lucas' and Jungwoo's official debut as members of NCT. This is how they were introduced. Because Ten is from Thailand, they also have a Thai version of "Baby Don't Stop" -- there are live performances of Ten and Taeyong performing the Thai version, as part of their promotions for this song in Thailand. Just search KZbin if you want to hear what it sounds like in Thai. Yes, the MV for "Baby Don't Stop" was filmed in the winter in Ukraine, at the same time and in the same location as the MV for "Boss." So that is why you might notice that "Boss" and "Baby Don't Stop" have similar looks and vibes. "Yestoday" (Yes-today) is one of those songs that you just have to look up the lyrics to. The words are very personal to Taeyong and Mark and it's all about their shortcomings, regrets and struggles and how they sacrificed their youth to become Idols and to do what they love to do. An explanation of what it's about, doesn't do it justice. The song is off NCT's Empathy album so SM kind of reworked Taeyong's original song to make it fit more of an empathetic vibe and message. The main message is still very powerful, but far less dark and self-deprecating than Taeyong originally wrote the song and lyrics to be. Taeyong wrote this song when he was still a trainee, and from the very beginning his plan was to have Doyoung be the vocalist on the song, but when SM greenlighted it for the album, they decided to add Mark and Lucas to it as well. NCT-2018's "Black on Black" is a special performance MV so it is designed to highlight the group's dance skills, it's not really about the song. ("Black on Black" is a B-side track from NCT's Empathy album that actually only features Taeyong, Mark and Lucas in the song.) NCT-2018 was a special project created in 2018 because, at the time, there were 18 members in NCT and SM thought it was a cool contrast that the number of members reflects the year. So they created this performance for "Black on Black" to highlight NCT. All of NCT's members are part of this performance, except YangYang, Hendery and Xiaojun because they had not debuted until 2019 when WayV was created; former members SungChan and Shotaro didn't debut until "Resonance" in 2020; and the six new members of NCT-WISH only just debuted in 2024. "Make A Wish (Birthday song)" has 7 members -- Taeyong (NCT's leader, main rapper, main dancer), Doyoung (main vocal) and Jaehyun (main vocal, sub-rapper and visual), who are members of NCT-127; Xiaojun (main vocal), who is a member of WayV; Jaemin (lead rapper), who is a member of NCT-Dream; Shotaro (Japanese member, main dancer and vocalist), who is no longer a member of NCT, but is now a member of SM's new boy group RIIZE; and Lucas (Hong Kong member, rapper and visual) who is a former member of WayV and now is an SM solo artist. In "From Home" they are singing in multiple languages. Taeil, Doyoung and Haechan are Korean; Kun, Renjun and Chenle are Chinese; and Yuta is Japanese. So this song has Korean, English, Mandarin and Japanese lyrics. Each of the members at one point were singing in their native language. Now you need to check out the live rearranged version of "From Home" at the MAMA 2020 award show. It's a rearranged version because it includes more than just the NCT members you see in the MV. It has so much more impact when you see the live performance. "'90s Love" has 7 members -- Ten (main dancer and lead vocalist), WinWin (lead vocalist and lead dancer) and YangYang (main rapper), who are members of WayV; Jeno (lead/main rapper), who is a member of NCT-Dream; Mark (main rapper and dancer) and Haechan (main vocal and dancer), who are members of NCT-127 and NCT-Dream; and Shungchan (Korean member, lead vocalist and rapper), who is no longer a member of NCT, but now is the co-leader of RIIZE, SM's new boy group. "Work It" has 7 members -- Johnny (Sub-vocal and sub-rapper), Yuta ( lead dancer, sub-vocal and sub-rapper) and Jungwoo (main vocalist) who are also members of NCT-127; Ten (main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper) and Hendery (lead rapper and sub-vocal), who are members of WayV; and Jaemin (lead rapper, lead dancer and sub-vocal) and Jisung (main dancer, sub-vocal and sub-rapper) who are members of NCT-Dream. NCT 2020's "Resonance" MV is a mashup of 4 songs from their Resonance album -- “Make A Wish (Birthday Song),” “Raise The Roof,” “90’s Love,” and “Work It.” "Raise the Roof" features all 23 members at the time and the other 3 songs -- which, as you have seen, each also have an MV -- feature the members who participate in that track on the album. NCT 2020 "Resonance" was a special project that NCT did in 2020 to introduce their two newest members at the time -- Shotaro and Sungchan (who have now become the co-leaders of SM's new boy group RIIZE). "Universe (Let's Play Ball)" has 9 members -- Jaemin (lead vocal) and Jeno (main rapper) are from NCT-Dream, Mark (Main rapper and dancer) and Haechan (Main vocal) are also from NCT-Dream and NCT-127, Doyoung (Main vocal) and Jungwoo (Main vocal) are from NCT-127, Xiaojun (Main vocal) and Yangyang (Main rapper) are from WayV and Shotaro (Japanese member, main dancer and vocalist), who is no longer a member of NCT but is a member of SM's new boy group RIIZE. "Beautiful" was a special song that NCT did in 2021 as a collaboration between all the members of NCT as a final song to wrap up their new album, NCT 2021 - Universe. (There are 21 members in this MV -- Winwin was busy with solo activities in China and Lucas was on hiatus at this time, so they were unable to participate in this project.) In the "Beautiful" MV, it actually shows the journey some of the members took in order to become members of NCT. Overall, the story depicts the struggles that the members, and young people in general, face as they go about their lives. "Golden Age" was NCT's group song for 2023. At this time they had 20 members because Sungchan and Shotaro had left the group to become members of RIIZE and it had been announced that Lucas had left the group and would be re-debuting as a solo artist. Every year since 2018 NCT has released a group album that includes all the sub-units on the same album and they always have one song with an epic performance MV that includes all the members. What makes "Baggy Jeans" extra special is that this is NCT-U's original debut lineup back together again. This is really just them going back to their roots. All 5 members -- Taeyong, Mark, Ten, Jaehyun and Doyoung -- were the very first members out of all of the NCT members to debut in April 2016. They were the first installment of NCT-U and the first of all of NCT's sub-units to be introduced to the world. Ten said not too long ago in an interview that he wanted to do another project with the members of their debut song "The 7th Sense" because it had been more than 7 years since he had done anything with just those members. I'm so happy that SM was listening and that his wish came true. "Pado" also has a track video. This song includes Taeyong (NCT's leader, main rapper, main dancer), Johnny (Sub-vocal and sub-rapper) and Jaehyun (main vocal, sub-rapper and visual), who are members of NCT-127; Mark (leader of NCT-Dream, Main rapper and main dancer) and Haechan (Main vocal) who are members of NCT-127 and NCT-Dream; and Xiaojun (main vocal) and Hendery (Lead rapper and sub-vocal), who are members of WayV. NCT is a group that is constantly changing and rearranging its members and sound and we never know quite what to expect from them. With a concept that allows the members to rotate between sub-units, changing, adding and subtracting members depending on the concept and style of the group or song, you should never expect the same thing from them. You are better off always expecting something new, that somehow, also ends up sounding very much like NCT. LOL

Anyway, I’m honestly more of an NCT Dream fan when it comes to music, and WayV too. I don’t really listen to NCT 127, but I have some NCT U songs I enjoy not all but pretty decent amount of songs, Such as -The 7th Sense, Yestoday, 90’s Love, Make a Wish, and Work It (which is actually a pretty fun song to vibe to). Beautiful is great too. Not gonna lie, I didn’t like Baggy Jeans at all at first, except for a few verses, like you said, but now I’m totally hooked 🤣. Also, Baby Don’t Stop, Call D, OK, Misfit, That’s Not Fair, and probably some more I can’t remember right now.
