Just wanted to say, first off love this channel, ur doing a beautiful thing. I'm no Steve Lacy but i'm not doing too bad for myself and I've always made everything on Garageband. I tell people all the time, you've got the power in your pocket. Make the thing and get it out there. You never know where its gonna go. And people always wanna discover something new. If the songwriting's good you can get away with a lot of rawness in the recording n people will dig it

So Steve really inspired me to start producing, and I have been for 2 years now. I started on my iPhone after seeing Steve’s video on the making of PRIDE and Dark Red. After a year I upgraded to a MacBook with logic and I still find myself making full songs on my iPhone from time to time. Something about working against the constraints of the equipment brings out more creativity. I produced a full album on my phone, and album 2 I’m working on now is at least 1/3 produced on my phone. With that being said I don’t understand why you whipped out a MacBook with GarageBand to make half of this recreation. It’s 100% possible and viable to use an iPhone with GarageBand iOS as a DAW. I’m also surprised you didn’t explore the Apple Loops or sample your own drums into the phone from the internet or even the drum machine. If the point of the video is to use an iPhone to recreate a Steve Lacy song, why only go halfway? Seeing you bust out the laptop immediately was pretty disappointing. This channel is still awesome, and so is this recreation! I just don’t understand why you immediately threw away the concept of the video. It is possible, to make great, fully orchestrated, mixed and mastered music on an iPhone. Lastly using the auto drummer feature is infuriating when I produced and feels like cheating when I’m producing, I will occasionally use it to build out a tambourine/percussion loop because it is better for that than the drum machine, but honestly the drum machine is extremely versatile and powerful especially if you download the free sample kits and play around with timings and velocities a bit. Overall great video, just a bit confused on why you didn’t actually execute on the concept.
@AudioHazeКүн бұрын
That's totally valid! It was genuinely because I could not plug an iRig into my phone, I've been wirelessly charging my phone for almost a year (the vocals actually ended up being recorded on Ethan's phone, so he could use the port to plug headphones in to monitor). I thought a good solution would be to use an interface that costs the same amount of money as an iRig, and then move to the iPhone when that part of the process was completed. That said, I see how using a computer would negate some of the point of working within budget, and maybe I should have just waited to do this when I swapped phones. Definitely an oversight. If it means anything, everything that I did in this video is entirely doable on iPhone for iOS. The only difference being the device you're working on. Not an excuse though, it was definitely an oversight and given what I strive to do with this channel I could have dived more into the experiment.

@AudioHaze6 сағат бұрын
When it comes to mixing you aren't necessary shooting for any specific AMOUNT of it, its more about adjusting settings until it feels right to you, although I typically aim for a loudness level of around -6 to 0dBs on the master fader, with a healthy amount of dynamics so it doesn't feel to compressed going into the master. When I get to the master, it gets a bit more rigid. I aim for a specific loudness level using a metric called "LUTs", usually -10 or so. I also usually bring up the compression on the full track, and try and cut out some problem frequencies on the mix that I head :)

Yeah of course if I wanted to make a 90s raw black metal demo, gear isn't necesseray, but it completely depends on the genre of music you want ot make. Try to make Beethoven's 9th symphony with only a recorder. Try to make Aphex Twin's Drukqs with only a shitty 20$ Casio synth.

All the "greatest" albums were made by dudes in smoky rooms twisting knobs until it sounded good enough to their half-deaf drunk/high ears
