Over the many years of being an audiofool, I have heard some expensive speakers that sounded horrible. Quite disappointing, in fact! And, of course, I have heard cheaper ones that sounded awful, as well. So a very long time ago, I came to conclude that the price alone was no indicator. The price really doesn't impress me much. I look to measurements as a precursory guide and then ultimately listen to the units, price be damned. Thanks for the work put into this video! Happy listening, everyone!! 😊

This is why Ascend Acoustics is my new favorite brand. They provide full near field scanner data on all their speakers, and their pricing is firmly middle of the road. The Sierra LX measures as good as anything I’ve ever seen as far as bookshelves go, and a pair is 1500$. Made in the USA from Norwegian drivers too! I think their only Achilles heel is low sensitivity.

I built the CSS Criton 1TDX w/ their high end x-over upgrade. They definitely sound on another level compared to my $500 Elac Unifi, Klipsch RP600M and even Wharfedale Linton. Although they were nearly $1200 total for the unbuilt kit, I would imagine they compete in the $2-4k range in terms of sound. I have no regrets and the kit allowed me to experience a sound quality I would otherwise not be able to afford.

If I’m using room correction at what point does speaker quality not matter?

. A+ for an excellent question. Running room correction software doesn't change the question of speaker quality mattering. Assuming one is running software & has a point at which speaker quality doesn't matter any further i.e. the sound is satisfactory, then this case is no different than one not running software. The matter is the same because the search for better sound is the same for those who do and for those who don't run software. Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊

Good video. I typically reside in about the $6-8k, all in, for 2 channel range. It occurred to me though, some time back, that I can be hooked into a lengthy listening session by much less. It's like whatever speakers around here get me first. This has curbed my quest for upgrading towards higher-end, pretty much completely. I am actually pleased that I am that easy after having visited the more expensive side of all this. I was headed up, just because I thought that was the logical thing to do. I am a stereo fanatic, otherwise, who listens every day. Full range bookshelf speakers below 8" are a hard sale for me. Just do not see the value above $1K for what ends up taking up as much room as a tower in all but on an actual table or shelf. One pretty much has to figure in a sub of equal quality to the equation. I am happy though, that budget speakers have improved so much. The budget realm of speakers a few decades back were awful.

Hi, when you guys say it’s important to have your speakers the same distance from the side walls can I ask a quick point of clarity? My right wall is flat. My left wall has a fireplace so is not flat. For that wall, should the distance for the speaker be measured from the front of the brick fireplace or the deepest part of the alcove or something else? Thank you.
@jameslarson2277
@jameslarson2277 7 ай бұрын
Much of the acoustic radiation from speakers emits from a lateral direction. That means that the side walls of your room will get hit with a lot of sound energy, and the walls will reflect most of it. Much of that reflected acoustic energy will hit your listening position, and in doing so, it boosts the sound coming from that speaker. So if one speaker is closer to a wall than the other, it not only gets a larger boost, the reflected energy also arrives at your listening position sooner. Both time arrival of sound and also amplitude are used by human hearing to determine localization, or what we would call 'imaging.' So the stereo image can shift in the direction of any speaker that is closer to nearby surfaces, especially side walls. If there is no choice in speaker placement, and one has to have an asymmetrcial placement, the adverse sound effects can be combated with treatments on the closer wall with stuff like acoustic absorbers, equalizers, and other techniques, so it doesn't have to degrade the sound necessarily, but it does take some effort and care to address.

The Pioneer receiver is long gone. I use a Marantz 7705 receiver with a Monoprice 5-channel Monolith amp, the one that uses ATI's class AB platform. Mid-tier speakers can be very good, and I do think the returns diminish significantly in sound quality as pricing goes higher.

I don't own the Theva bookshelves but do own 4 No.3-D's, the center channel and 2 surrounds. They're good, but I absolutely do not love them. Sure the problem may be from the Marantz SR8015 which I bought with them (it's extremely problematic... Plays FLAC 192 24 but does it? Has anyone had that actually happen through the USB port on the front lower right? For me it refuses to play as much). I like these Theva's but * absolutely do not love them. But I should say, I bought them because it was less expensive then sending my 1990's Martin Logan's in to be refurbished (arcing). I'm going to give Dali Oberon's a chance next (but physically receiving the 9's seems to be impossible, so going 7's in the front is hard to swallow). Really I should just go back to where I was happiest and buy a full set of Martin Logan's as new. I think... (On occasion)

In my experience, price, size, build doesn't guarantee absolute performance improvements and even when they do, you may prefer a cheaper speaker that doesn't measure as well. Depends on synergy, room, tastes, etc. I find my budget models preferable to alot of others more expensive or more resolving. Especially when more expensive speakers do some things better but others worse. I think one point is that higher ended gear (relative) is expected to be able to be played louder while maintaining SQ so if one typically listens at lower to moderate SPLs...what's the point of spending more? Some more expensive speakers actually give you better performance at lower SPls but not all do. Experience, room, tastes matter and if a cheaper system does it, don't upgrade. But you won't know where the point of getting more performance for one's needs are until you put some time in this hobby.

@@Audioholics psychoacoustics are entirely down to the listeners ear structure, subjective preferences, room and it's own reflective/absorbtive properties, even temperature can play into psychoacoustics. So to take it into account, even over data, when all other parameters are quantifiable, would be subjective fallacy. I think this is where "everyone is different and you should try it in your own room" comes in as the best advice, though having objective quantifiable data to start with should be top priority, like with all other purchases. All escooters ride differently, but we have easy to evaluate base data to start with to make that choice. Then subjective review for the "try yourself" part.
