The term Pre-Amplifier means loosely before the amplifier. It is not meant to indicate it is amplifying anything. It's meant to indicate exactly what it does do. Before or pre the amplifier it creates a signal for the amplifier to amplify.

That would be an interesting definition. However, going forward, I'll be using the term as I did in this video.

Your reviews are a hoot, being able to ironically describe a new product that suits the needs of new music users as well as you do is a gift of few. My old ears still rejoice so much with my faithful Luxman C-03B preamplifier and I think I can do without this Arylic but keeping up to date is useful to understand what tools the new music users use. A big hello.

I buy the Arylic to add some "Modern" input to the LJM 12-2 amplifier I built for my garage. The package is first class and smell attention to detail but you need to be realistic and never expect the quality of a $500+ Preamp or DAC. That say this little box help my old BIC Ventury to move lot of nasty fume in the garage! I like to try a set of EV or Yamaha stage speaker with that combo.

Honestly, a preamp is legitimately called as such if it has preamplifiers in it (like you identified with the phono section) and/or has a user-facing volume control. The preamp may be able to output at a level higher than the source material, even at line level, and therefore can be consider a preamp as it pre-amplifies the input signal to get it to the level of the power amplifier, which is normally set to a fixed level of amplification, unlike a preamp. The switcher side of a most preamps is not a necessary feature of a preamp but is often associated with preamps (as are tone controls and other general routing).

Thanks for this, again, insightful video. I have an off topic question, at 7:29 you mention sensible changes to your Quad 306 amp which I also use with a lot of joy (together with a 34 pre). My units are original with the exeption of new electrolytic caps in the PSU and all the small ones in the 34 (because of their age). I have found nothing about a Quad 306 on your channel but I am curious what you did further on than just quitting the on-off switch (and perhaps the speaker plugs). I am not asking for an alteration of the given input sensitivity. Thanks a lot and keep on doing your fantastic work. Greetings to your virtual team as well.

I used my 306 for micro PA back in the 1980s/90s. A power switch is one more thing to go wrong. The only addition is two 20 dB attenuators on the inputs for my Yamaha NS10M Studio monitors.

Well, it has a phono stage so it does contain some amplification, I on the other hand have a little box here proudly labelled "Passive Pre Amp" and it contains no active electronics at all, it has a rocker switch to select between two inputs, one goes straight through, and the other goes via a potentiometer or variable attenuator controlled by a knob next to the rocker switch. I wondered why I'd actually paid money for this thing but then I remembered that the actual preamplifier I used at the time was rather short of inputs, it catered for a turntable, a tape deck and a radio tuner, so when a CD player joined the party I had to resort to plug swapping .. So, enter the "Passive Pre Amp", which has another label beneath that which gives a clue, "CD Control Unit", the idea being that the output from the CD player was more than enough to stir the air up nicely, indeed to avoid rattling my wife's ornaments off the shelf onto the floor, which was entertaining in itself but caused my good lady much anguish, it needed a way to reduce the volume somewhat and that's where this little box came in, so, useful it was but pre-amp it was not.

David. In defense of what should be a little gem but sadly for me wasn't, passive pre amps are marketed as preamps not switchers, even though passive line level preamps with attenuators have no amplification abilities, they are still labeled and sold as pre amps. Typically, line level input switchers do not include any form of amplification or volume control. The fact that this unit has a true volume control might have something to do with it being sold as a pre amp. This product on review more than qualifies as being called a preamp, this is because of the phono stage's amplification section, plus the volume control knob for all the other inputs they all have to be processed through it before reaching the main amplifier. This makes it a pre amp in the true sense. Thus; the term pre amp need not refer to what it does, but more to where you place it in your audio system, before main amplifier comes to mind! I had one of these BP50's for one day only before sending it back. I can honestly say that it was a solid piece of junk. It had several serious issues such as: Crosstalk on all inputs, emitting loud thumps when selecting any of the inputs, as well as producing loud clicks when any signal was paused or restarted. Some of these same faults seem to be endemic in other cheap Chinese audio products, the Aiyima T9 comes to mind ! Even sending it back to Germany for a refund has become a problem because the German customs didn't read the declaration label that I had correctly filled in and they have since returned it back to me. On a plus note the flat EQ setting was very flat, possibly too flat. No, I can better describe it as being dull and lifeless.

I always thought that preamps contain the first one or more amplification stages and the power amplifiers contain only the last 1 or 2 power stages. If preamps contain only switches and tone controls without adding any amplification, why is it always claimed that the separated amps (pre+power) are always better than integrated amps? Since 1988 I have the Pioneer A-333 integrated amp, and it sounds still very good to me. Actually for my listening I would not need a power amp at all, since I listen always with headphones. I don't need a phono preamp too. But I don't find a good headphone amp with tone controls, loudness control, possibly with a good DAC too. A 1W headphone amp could be made in class A without problems. To use a 50+50W amp to drive only headphones is a just a waste.

Save some money get a pair of Bose 301s series II or III ( Large Advent fried egg tweeters in front first order cross over at 2600 hertz and an adjustable L-Pad) put a pair of small directional speakers with good vocals just inside on a separate amp with volume control. Maybe a small sub and a couple of small coaxial speakers in a paint can (give it it's own amp too) on the other side of the room aimed at the ceiling. Put on Brian Eno's On Land and enjoy. You won't need much power so the amplifier can be small ( mine are all 80s Mosfet integrated so there are volume controls to get the right blend) just need a good preamp.
